As non-Christians today hear about the healing miracles of the Lord Jesus Christ, they must respond by realising the fallen and corrupted nature of their own hearts and by turning from sin and fleeing to Christ, through whom alone there is forgiveness, mercy and the power to heal a sin-sick soul. Those who do not come to Christ for salvation will find that a worse thing than physical sickness will come upon them, namely the eternal wrath of the holy God.

We detect false teaching by its conformity to the philosophical fashions of the day. We detect it by a willingness to please men. John here commends the believers for not being overcome by the spirit of the age, and for standing firm as truth is attacked. May God help us to overcome the false teachers and alluring philosophies of our own age. May the Lord help us to discern at all times the spirit of truth from the spirit of error. O Lord, help us to keep the world out of the church.

AN ACCOUNT OF THE DEATH OF ABSALOM : The Lord Jesus Christ is exalted above all angelic power; Satan and all His evil spirits are under Christ’s authority. Absalom right now is suffering the condemnation of Christ upon him. All who reject the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ today are Absaloms, proudly setting themselves up against the King whose authority can never be undermined. Therefore we say to every atheist, every agnostic, every secularist, and every follower of any other religion, Stop your futile rebellion against the King of kings and Lord of lords. Stop being a reckless Absalom and realise that all men must appear before the judgement seat of Christ and bow the knee to Him.

All must take on board the mighty miracles of the Lord Jesus Christ during His ministry upon the earth. Yet no-one today must look to see further miracles. There is sufficient evidence in the written record already. An "evil and adulterous generation" keeps seeking for signs. A man must not believe in Christ because He can heal, but because He alone can save us from our sins.

As with Judah in Habakkuk’s day, most people in our contemporary society remain recklessly indifferent to the fact of coming judgement. Many are more concerned about offending the planet by the use of God-given fossil fuels than offending the God who controls the climate and the Judge of each one of us.

Our task as Bible-believing Christians is to grieve over them, and to confront the sin and unbelief all around us. We must be watchers, earnestly praying that God will work in power; we must be weepers, deeply lamenting the national wickedness and longing that the lost might be saved, and we must be workers, doing all that we can to preach the Gospel of salvation, to bring sinners to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

This passage teaches us :

1) the need to put off all sin

2) the need to maintain the unity of the brethren

3) the need to strive for the truth

4) the need to stand fast in the face of the world’s opposition and persecution.

May the Lord help each of us to display that necessary behaviour which is required of those who embrace the gospel of our glorious Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

1. A true Christian will believe all the Bible, and its words must abide in his heart.

2. Every word of Scripture is breathed out by God, and so no man has any authority to dispute what God has declared.

3. There can be no partial obedience to Scripture. There can be no rejection of God’s word on the grounds of contemporary thinking and the fashion of there moment.

4. There are legal and ceremonial sections of the Old Testament which are not applicable today, but the Jewish civil and ceremonial laws are prophetic of Christ's coming. They are an essential part of God's progressive revelation. Their prophetic symbolism has now been fulfilled, but they continue to teach us vital principles.

5. The Old Testament, on Christ’s own authority, is all about Him, just as is the New. Both the Testaments now form a perfect whole as the sum of all God's revelation to men for all time.

6. The Lord Jesus Christ plainly links rejection of Himself with rejection of the Bible.

7. All must approach the Bible with humble, repentant and prayerful hearts. Those who opposed the Lord Jesus Christ were familiar with the Scriptures, but did not know them in their true spiritual sense, as applied to their own hearts.

8. Christ calls upon all men today to "search the Scriptures", for they testify of Him. There is no other way to know of the Saviour except through the reading and hearing what the Bible teaches.

9. In the Bible, and there alone, do we find the way to everlasting life.
