  • Conversation with Associate Professor Ben Horan – VR Mover and Shaker
This week’s episode I get to chat with one of Australia’s experts in VR and AR – or if you’ve been living under a large boulder for the last decade, virtual reality and augmented reality – Associate Professor Ben Horan. Ben heads up the VR Lab for the CADET (large fancy and leading edge engineering faculty at Deakin University. He’s respected by his peers in the industry and being on point about all things VR and mixed reality.
In this episode we dive into the future of what this technology will bring, its been a big year for the technology, – Apple have hired NASA’s VR King and other large operators like Google and Amazon are also investing heavily in the technology which will of course shape the future of what they will offer their customers.
Ben’s first and foremost a teacher at heart, He loves the impact AR, VR, or mixed reality and haptics will do in the field of education and training. It will transform the sector and provide a more immersive, intuitive learning experience for students in the field of medicine, health, disaster relief, manufacturing, construction and many many more. Its a real game changer.
Ben also talks about a companies like Zero Latency, a Melbourne outfit working at the forefront of VR tech globally, who work alongside other global players who are in their own way, paving the way for a future that will be augmented and fully immersive in the gaming world.
It was such an honour to have him on – no really….. He was expecting his second baby three days after our conversation, so…. you could say, he was pretty aware he had his own level of transformation happening personally ;-). Wishing him a magical few months watching his baby grow and finally letting himself take some well earned time out. A great guy and someone I think we will see a lot more of in the future.

  • Conversation with Professor Sohail Inayatullah – global futurist
This week on People My Dog Would Like I had the pleasure of speaking with Professor Sohail Inayatullah, a leading political scientist and futurist who was awarded UNESCO’s first Chair of Future Studies. Inayatullah speaks globally addressing governments and large corporations on futures thinking, strategy development, innovation and bio-securities. He’s regarded by many of his peers as one of the leading “futurists” in the world. He’s Futurist in Residence at Tamkang University Taiwan, and an Associate at Melbourne Business School, Adjunct Professor at the University of the Sunshine Coast also heads up a number of Centres in Futures Thinking for other leading institutions across Asia. He co-hosts Metafuture, an educational think tank at Tamkang University that explores alternative and preferred futures and the worldviews and myths that underlie them.
In this episode we talk about his colourful upbringing, how it shaped him into the person he is today and also planted the seed for the work that takes him to all corners of the globe. Inayatullah has lived in Islamabad, Pakistan; Bloomington, Indiana; Flushing, New York; Geneva, Switzerland; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Honolulu, Hawaii; and currently resides in Mooloolaba, Australia. He’s been everywhere.
We talk about what futures thinking is, the future of work, UBI and the challenge we have today to address the issues of uncertainty in our economy, particularly so with education and learning. Disruption is the new normal and our systems are groaning under the need for new ways of thinking.
We talk at length about the power of metaphors and how, believing in the wrong one, can significantly control your attitude and behaviour which inevitably impacts your future. It seems strange to think the narrative you play out to yourself would have that kind of power over you, but evidence suggests the scripts we repeat to ourselves have such a huge impact on how we perceive the world and our place in it.
Hilariously he was chatting to me from his parent’s home in Lahore – a couple of his points really rang a bell….. if you listen you’ll understand what I mean! In fact bell ringing comes up regularly during the conversation

  • Conversation with Co-Founders Katrina Donaghy and Akasha Indream on blockchain
This week I was keen to discuss the topic of blockchain technology and the potential is has in store for us all and invited two women on the show as my guests. Katrina Donaghy, co-founder of Civic Ledger, has so much energy and I hope provides you all with some clarity on blockchain tech. Civic Ledger is an Australian startup that uses the best of emerging technologies to transform a wide range of business process challenges faced by public sector regulated markets. I also invited Akasha Indream into the conversation who is founder and Chief Editor of Miss Blockchain, an online news and technology portal, actively embracing social enterprise, sustainable development and gender equity.
I’m fascinated by the opportunity blockchain technology opens up for women and those who have been on the fringes of society. The possibilities opening up to individuals, startups, business, governments and organisations to solve problems and bypass our legacy systems are huge.
Adding blockchain as a tool in our toolkit is going to change the world. Creating greater efficiencies, solving what have been considered intractable problems, providing startups with an alternative to raise their own capital to build their business faster with community support is now on the agenda. And believe it or not, startups are helping to shape our world into a better place.
Both Katrina and Akasha outline how useful the technology will be by creating new forms of value in our future economies, which will have significant impact on not only our lives, but particularly those in developing countries. Imagine providing 2.3 billion people currently unbanked with an opportunity for the first time participate in the economy through having a wallet with cryptocurrencies in it? Through their phones, through the apps on their phones and through blockchain technology. They will be able to reorganise into new economies and that is incredibly powerful and that will change the world. For good.
It was gorgeous listening to Akasha talk about blockchain the way she did. As a ‘beautiful field’. It’s incredible technology and one we need to be across. Fast.
A short episode, Katrina had to dive back into the Intersekt Festival where we met, but hoping you find it useful enough to decide to spend some time exploring what blockchain is and where it is being applied. Will be revisiting this technology as a topic regularly with a view to talking to specific startups working with the technology, so watch this space.

  • Conversation with Dr Tia Kansara – Author and Global Sustainability Expert
This week’s episode with with Dr Tia Kansara. Tia is an author, speaker and global leader on the topic of sustainability. She is an inspirational leader on a global campaign speaking with political leaders, policy makers and influential corporate leaders to advocate for a new ecosystem that could transform the way we live.
She shares her movement called Replenish Earth, where it she is driving the philosophy of giving back to nature more than we take.
Replenish Earth is the philosophy of living in harmony with nature; it is a cause and a collective action to protect the global commons – the natural resources we all share
The Replenish economy is founded on the principles of the World Replenish Index, a market place which transcends and includes GDP to 100% compostable products conscious of our environmental impact. Through the WRI, Dr Kansara and her team are able to investigate the impact of our waste disposal habits beyond national borders and positively reinforce behaviours and businesses that are aligned with this.
She’s travelled to more than 80 countries so far and her campaign is gaining real traction with world leaders. In this episode we talk about the challenge of our massively growing cities and how we can nudge them to become more sustainable. How as individuals we can, each day, with the choices we make, make a difference. And a lot more. If you want to subscribe to Replenish Earth and be actively involved you can find them on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. You can also buy the book Replenish here.

  • Conversation with Sacha Kaluri and Sonya Karras, hosts of The Sonya & Sacha Show
My conversation this week is with Sacha Kaluri and Sonya Karras, the gorgeous, delightful hosts of the Sonya and Sacha Show. Authors, co-founders of TeenageExpo, one of Australia’s largest educational teen events and keynote speakers sought after by schools, parents, corporates and not for profits throughout Australia to guide parents talking all things teens.
They are authors of the recently released manifesto for parents: The Two Worlds of Your Teenager. It sold out on its first print run before it hit the stores.
Their friendship spans 17 years and in this time they’ve been working with teenagers on a daily basis. They understand that while teenagers experience many changes in their lives, there are two big areas that come into full bloom about the same time as each other: social life and thoughts about a career path.
Sonya and Sacha are experts in these two areas. They believe it’s the parent’s job to be well prepared for this often confusing time in their teenager’s life. Then when your children really need help they will confidently come to you, their parents, because you understand what’s really going on. The purpose is to make sure the forever-widening gap between teens and their parents becomes narrower and narrower. They believe the more choices, options and information a teenager is given, the more likely they are to make positive choices, especially when faced with a tricky situation.
For two years running have been the official Australian ambassadors for the United Nations New York Women’s Entrepreneurship Day and are running hot. Here we talk about their friendship, kale, how lucky they feel and how tough it is to be a parent and a female entrepreneur, advice they’d give their 20 year old selves and a load more. They are a huge support for each other and great advocates for how to support women in the entrepreneurial space. Had such a fab time with them, hope you enjoy the chat.

  • Conversation with Omer Molad – CEO of Vervoe – on how they are transforming recruitment
Omer Molad is co-founder of Vervoe, a start-up on the precipice of changing the face of how companies find their teams. They’re changing how you and I will find work in the future. They’re bringing “fair” to the way companies connect with their prospective team members. Better than that, actually fit people into gigs we love and suited to what we are actually good at. They’re humanising recruitment and its a win- win scenario.
We talk about the inherent bias of resumés. But now you don’t need fancy back story. You don’t need to have gone to a top school. Or uni. Or have worked at a well branded company.
Molad talks about a way to link candidates with employers where the best one fit for the gig will be the one who gets it. It’s a platform giving people every possible chance to shine.
He’s about to take off on a global trip of world domination and I’m feeling this is just the beginning for Vervoe. Super cool way for people trying to find their way in a new economy, and land that dream gig. They are literally starting a movement around recruiting, making it less bias, more transparent and giving everyone a shot.
We also talk about what its like to chew one sultana for six minutes…. and the simple things that make him happy. And his crazy Rhodesian Ridgeback. Cha Cha would love him, I’m sure.

  • Conversation with Mark Wolfe of Hassell and Adam Scott of Freestate UK

Airports are so boring if you don’t want to buy….. dry, monolithic, dull places to be. And we spend a fair bit of time there. So why can’t they be places of discovery, curiosity and fun? They don’t need to be mean spirited and just about money. Just look at Helsinki airport. Or Munich. Passengers go early just to enjoy the experience.
What if Nike ran an airport? Or Sony?
Imagine a second Sydney airport celebrating Australian culture, and that provides a showcase for young fresh entrepreneurs who are brilliantly reflecting the young, hot vibe of the city?
It’s the reason why the partnership between Hassell Studio and Freestate UK driving the human experience in design is so exciting for Australia. Here Adam Scott and Mark Wolfe talk about Sydney airport and their drive to “make airports a generous host” and more compellingly, “Sydney has a chance here to get it right”.
An exciting and wonderful conversation covering airport design, joyful experiences, vujaday (you have to go 48.45 to get this – just delightful), smart tech and future cities with these two wonderfully inspiring, fun and future thinking architects who I truly hope are in poll position to create a truly unique and engaging space in what would give western Sydney a MASSIVE economic boost and a reason to celebrate.

  • Conversation with Michelle Redfern – Founder of Advancing Women and Women Who Get It
In this episode I chat with Michelle Redfern, one of Australia’s most prominent female leadership experts. Michelle is the founder of Advancing Women, a business created to help women everywhere advance themselves in our male dominated corporate world. The business is about providing women tools they need to navigate their way through the world as well as advocate on behalf of women in sport, business and politics.
In this episode she talks about what it was like for her to grow up in regional Australia, and how it has shaped her.
Some take aways: “Women have great emotional intelligence. Stop calling what they have soft skills. Its bullshit.. We all need emotional intelligence in the future to differentiate us from the machines.” Hard to disagree there.
What do women need? Power. Money. Influence. She’s no wallflower.

A busy women’s mentor herself, Michelle talks about how important it is to see the women’s game in AFL this year as a platform to elevate women in leadership across the board, which she believes has laid the ground to change the mindset of those watching – to inspire future generations of women who want to have a crack at anything they want to do. She argues women need to see women in power to aspire to senior positions themselves and she also believes we need to strive to be powerful AND emotionally intelligent leaders, a quality all smart compassionate leaders need. Michelle is a kick arse business woman herself, with a soft heart and knows her footy. She loves her teams, she loves her tribe and believe me, that tribe is building exponentially – she’s a woman to watch big time.
If you are interested in learning more about Michelle and what she does you can contact her directly through her website or on linkedin or twitter.
Intro and outro music credit is by the fabulous Bamboos (track Helpless Blues) a hot Melbourne band.
If you have any questions about the content in the show or have some feedback I’d love you to contact me directly at through my website and you can also catch me anytime on LinkedIn Twitter or Instagram. Would love to know who you may want me to be a guest on the show, so don’t be shy and let me know!
