  • You Can Overcome Depression | Herbert Cooper - Audio
1 Kings 19:4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down
under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than
    my ancestors.” (NIV)

    1. Physical health must be a priority

1 Kings 19:4–8   while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat
down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life; I am no
better than my ancestors.” 5  Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched
him and said, “Get up and eat.” 6  He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot
coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. 7  The angel of the LORD came back a
second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” 8  So he got
up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached
Horeb, the mountain of God. (NIV)

Psalm 90:12 Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. (NIV)

6 Practices To Help You Wisely Number Your Days

    1. Unplug daily

    2. Sleep nightly

    3. Exercise consistently

1 Tim 4:8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for
both the present life and the life to come. (NIV)

    4. Sabbath weekly

Exodus 20:8-11 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.  9  Six days you shall labor and do all your
work,  10  but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you,
nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in
your towns.  11  For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he
rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. (NIV)

    5. Vacation yearly

    6. Say no frequently

1 Corinthians 10:23 You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you.
You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is beneficial. (NLT)

    2. Press into the presence of God

    1. Press into God’s presence with realness

1 Kings 19:4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down
under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than
    my ancestors.” (NIV)

Psalm 18:6 In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my
voice; my cry came before him, into his ears. (NIV)

Psalm 120:1 I took my troubles to the LORD; I cried out to him, and he answered my prayer. (NLT)

Psalm 61:1–2 Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. 2  From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my
heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. (NIV)

    2. Press in by pursuing God’s presence

1 Kings 19:11–13   The LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the
LORD is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks
before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was
not in the earthquake. 12  After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire
came a gentle whisper. 13  When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the
mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” (NIV)

    3. Press in by positioning yourself in God’s presence

1 Kings 19:13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of
the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” (NIV)

When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram. 16  Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and
anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet. 17  Jehu will put to death any who
escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu. 18  Yet I reserve
seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed
    him.” (NIV)

6 Ways You Get In The Cave Of Depression

    1. Out of control lifestyles

    1. Out of control emotions

1 Kings 19:2-4   So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so
severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.” 3  Elijah was afraid and
ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, 4  while he himself went a
day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die.
“I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” (NIV)

    2. Out of control schedules

Ecclesiastes 4:6 Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind.
    (NIV)

    2. Comparing yourself to others

Galatians 6:4 Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well
done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. (NLT)

    3. Negative self-talk

1 Kings 19:10 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have
rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only
one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” (NIV)

Romans 8:6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.
    (NIV)

    4. Inability to process pain in a healthy way

    trouble.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion

trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.5 For just as we share abundantly in the
sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. (NIV)

    5. Isolation

2 Reasons Why I Haven’t Given Up On The Church

    1. Jesus I saw in people.

Mark 2:1-5 A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard
that he had come home.  2  They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room
left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them.  3  Some men came,
bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them.  4  Since they could not get him
to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by
digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on.  5  When Jesus saw
their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” (NIV)

    2. I became a Christ Follower

Mark 2:6-12 Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves,  7  “Why
does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
8  Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their
hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things?  9  Which is easier: to
say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and
    walk’?

But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.”So he
said to the man,  11  “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”  12  He got up, took his
mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised
God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!” (NIV)

3 Things I’ve Learned From Following the Life and Words of Jesus

    1. If an imperfect church was good enough for Jesus, it’s good enough for me.

Luke 4:16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath
day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. (NIV)

    2. The goal outweighs the grief.

Matthew 28:16-20 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had
told them to go.  17  When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.  18  Then Jesus
came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  19  Therefore
go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and
of the Holy Spirit,  20  and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I
am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (NIV)

Philippians 3:13-14 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold
of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,  14  I
press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in
    Christ Jesus. (NIV)

    3. Choose to be a part of the solution not part of the problem.

Matthew 16:18 Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), [a]  and upon
this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell [b]  will not conquer it. (NIV)

    2. Hypocrites live to impress people

Matthew 23:5-7 “Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries wide and
the tassels on their garments long; 6  they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats
in the synagogues;  7  they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by
    others. (NIV)

Matthew 6:1-2 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If
you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2  “So when you give to the needy, do not
announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by
others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. (NIV)

Matthew 6:5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the
synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their
    reward in full. (NIV)

Matthew 6:16   “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces
to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. (NIV)

2 Negative Effects Of Living A Hypocritical Life

    1. Trust is broken

Matthew 23:3 So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for
they do not practice what they preach. (NIV)

    2. It puts heavy burdens on people’s shoulders

Matthew 23:4 They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they
themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. (NIV)

2 Lifestyle Changes That Bring Hope Instead Of Hurt

    1. Be inward focused more than outward focused

Matthew 6:1 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If
you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. (NIV)

Matthew 6:3–4   But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is
doing, 4  so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will
    reward you. (NIV)

Matthew 6:6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is
unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. (NIV)

Matthew 6:17-18   “But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18  so that it will not
be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father,
who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. (NIV)

    2. Be real instead of fake

Matthew 23:11–12 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12  For those who exalt themselves will
be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. (NIV)
