  • Møtrik

Erik Golts and Dave Fulton of the band Møtrik are my guests. Møtrik is on the front lines of a krautrock revival. The band’s origin can be traced back to a drunken conversation about the genre. And it’s really funny to listen as the memories come flooding back to Dave and Erik as we go through the band’s history.

They give me a really good lesson on krautrock and what drew them to it in the first place. Møtrik has also gone through a few changes; like starting off as an instrumental band and then adding lyrics as they grew. They tell me how they one up Kraftwerk and how a conversation with artist Jonas Hartley about fog machines led to a unifox. At one point, my dog interrupts us and I make Erik feel bad about photographing an album cover. Follow Møtrik @motrikband on Instagram. Order the new album, Moon from bandcamp or their label, Jealous Butcher. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on all the socials. You can support the show at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety or buy merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. So hop on the space train and check out Erik Golts and Dave Fulton of Møtrik on Performance Anxiety, part of the Pantheon Podcast Network.

  • Scott von Ryper (The Black Ryder, The Jesus And Mary Chain)

Back in mid-July, I had the distinct pleasure of speaking with Scott von Ryper. Scott’s love of music stems from his dad’s passion for big band and family organ lessons as a child. He began playing in a band with his brother at age 11, doing covers. He began playing bass soon after. His first one being made from some wood he found under his house, clothesline wire, and some nails.

Once he got a proper bass, he began playing out, doing the biker bar circuit where fights would break out on the dance floor. After playing with the bands Scarlet and The Morning After Girls, Scott formed The Black Ryder with Aimee Nash. They were immediately asked to open shows for bands like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Jesus and Mary Chain, which Scott would later join as a touring guitarist. Scott is releasing his first solo album with a mix of songs that have been around for years and new music.

Scott shares so many great stories in this episode! So give him a follow @vonryper on Twitter & Instagram. And pick up his solo debut Dream State Treasure wherever & however you get new music. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on the socials, send us some coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanciety. Merch is found at performanceanx.threadless.com. Now let’s welcome Scott von Ryper to the Performance Anxiety family, part of the Pantheon Podcast Network.

  • Luke Condon (Town Meeting, Long May You Young)

This episode gives you two guests in one. The multi-talented Luke Condon joins me. Not only is he a part of the band Town Meeting, he’s a co-host of the Long May You Young podcast. Luke and I discuss his early musical venture into rap and being in a band with his brothers Russ and Babe and hearing his dad play While My Guitar Gently weeps while passing gas on the toilet.

Luke reveals his best and worst live experiences, we create a new genre of music called SKUNK, and we talk a lot about Neil Young. That’s the focus of Luke’s show on the Pantheon Podcast Network called Long May You Young. And in honor of the show, I create a cocktail that Luke and I named...Piss Town. • Grant Curry (Flood Twin, James Hall)

Flood Twin’s Grant Curry joins me on this episode. His road to music was neither direct nor easy. He was diagnosed with diabetes at age 8. By the age of 14 he was already in a drug treatment center. After going through rehab, he has stayed clean and even became a counselor. But music was always in the back of his mind, calling him. When the opportunity to take time off of work and play, he took it and never looked back. He met James Hall and created four incredible albums with James Hall & Pleasure Club. But after Hurricane Katrina uprooted his life in Louisiana, Grant relocated to Georgia and eventually formed his new band, Flood Twin. The band is releasing their debut album and it’s a beast! Not only is the music minimalist and powerful, but so is the artwork, which was also done by Grant. Follow the band @floodtwin. You can buy the album on Bandcamp or stream it everywhere. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on the socials. Feed us coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Buy things at performanceanx.threadless.com. • Troy Murrah (Restavrant)

One of the benefits of doing this podcast is being introduced to new bands by my guests. Early on I had Leah Shapiro & Peter Hayes from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club on the show. After the show they both said I had to have the guys from a band called Restavrant on. Well, it took a little while but we finally made it happen. Troy Murrah from Restavrant is my guest. He got started playing music a little later than most. He ruined his chances at guitar lessons by skipping piano lessons as a kid, but he got a chance later on after a relationship ended. He taught himself slide guitar by watching as many tapes and DVDs of his favorite blues guitarists as he could find. He started playing out and chose the name Restavrant as kind of a joke and now he’s stuck with it. His sense of humor rears its head all over the place, like using typos on albums on purpose.

In addition to his music, Troy also creates quilt-based wooden works of art. He started the project as a memorial for his mother and it’s grown so much that he was asked to write a book about it. Check out restavrant.com, they’re pretty easy to find on social media, too. Their high energy dirty blues rock is definitely worth checking out. You can also check out social media @PerformanceAnx. You can help support the show at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Merch is at performanceanx.threadless.com. And check out the other great shows on the Pantheon Podcast Network. There’s absolutely something for everyone. Now I hope I’ve worked up your appetite for Troy Murrah of Restavrant on Performance Anxiety ,part of the Pantheon Podcast Network.

  • Paul Claro (Cinema Cinema)

I’m joined by drummer Paul Claro. Paul is one half of the band Cinema Cinema. He is also related to the other half of Cinema Cinema, guitarist and noisemaker, Ev Gold. Together they form one of the most avant garde bands recording today. Paul tells me all about wanting to be in a band with Ev ever since he was a little kid.

Paul got a feel for being a musician early. In high school, his jazz band played in a lot of competitions and even toured Japan! That’s about the same time he went from being the music nerd in his school to the cool drummer who was in three different bands.

The duo of Paul and Ev began as a backing band for some music Paul’s dad was recording. The magic was undeniable and the cousins have been playing together ever since. They have just released CCXMDII; a recording they did with jazz musician Matt Darriau. Paul discusses those sessions and what is next for Cinema Cinema. Follow them on social media @cinemacinema on Twitter & @cinemacinemaband on IG. Pick up CCXMD & CCXMDII wherever you get music. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on social media. You can help support the show on ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety or buy merch at performanceanx.threadless.com Follow @PantheonPods and check out all the other great shows on the network. • Justin Greaves (Crippled Black Phoenix)

Justin Greaves of Crippled Black Phoenix joins the podcast family this week. Not only do we talk about Crippled Black Phoenix, it’s formation, it’s troubles, it’s resurrection, and a new album; we go even further back. Back past Electric Wizard, past Armour Of God, past Hard To Swallow, and even past Iron Monkey. We go all the way back to his dad’s record shop and how that informed his desire to create music that he hadn’t heard yet. We do discuss all those bands and more, though, so don’t worry. Justin’s cat, Fang, joins us for a bit while we talk about CBP being Punk Floyd, gravity bikes, and create new genres of music, like Doom Disappointment. Follow CBP on Facebook & Instagram @cbp_444. Follow us @PerformanceAnx of socials. Coffee from ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety is always appreciated. Merch can be found at performanceanx.threadless.com.

  • Dwayne Dopsie

Thirteen time Offbeat Magazine accordion player of the year and two time Grammy nominee Dwayne Dopsie jumps on the podcast. He’s got zydeco in his blood. His family created the genre! He was going to play zydeco and there was no backup plan. We talk about his music, playing some unusual cover songs, and the possibility of a zydeco concept album. I don’t think he’s completely sold on that yet. We disagree about whipped cream frosting, discuss him being ranked as a reason to visit New Orleans, and being the Ric Flair of accordion. Check out the new album from Dwayne Dopsie & The Zydeco Hellraisers, Set Me Free, wherever you get new music. Follow him @dwaynedopsie on social media. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on social media. We accept coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Merch is at performanceanx.threadless.com. Now get ready to start moving with Dwayne Dopsie on Performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network.

  • Bren Holmes (The Young Dubliners)

Bren Holmes moved from Dublin, Ireland to Los Angeles, California to start an Irish band called The Young Dubliners. They play a great combination of rock and traditional Irish music. In fact, Bren tells me how he gets a royalty check for a song that’s 400 years old.

After 28 years of grueling touring with the band, Bren called it a career. Until, that is, he started finishing music that he had been writing for years. He got together with some friends and recorded his first solo album, Everything You Never Wanted. Give him a follow @brenholmesmusic on Instagram and check out the album wherever you get new music. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on socials. We love coffee from ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Our merch is at performanceanx.threadless.com. So grab a drink and let’s get started with Bren Holmes on Performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network.

  • Chris Olley (six. by seven)

Chris Olley of six by seven was kind enough to take a break from writing to join us on the podcast. We jump right into it with how difficult it is for artists to remain true to themselves. Chris also discusses how he transformed from a guitar shredder to a Neil Young disciple. His band, six by seven, was the band that should have broken here in the US but didn’t. Chris posits that it could be the band’s penchant for terrible timing. He also schools me on Cher’s Do You Believe, discusses his bizarre working relationship with Julian Cope, and how long it takes him to get sacked from any given job. He also breaks down why people believe he’s a prolific songwriter. I’d recommend following his social media, but he doesn’t have any. Check the band out at Bandcamp. There’s a lot there! Check us out on the socials @PerformanceAnx. You can treat us to coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Merch is found at performanceanx.threadless.com. Let’s not waste any time and get right into it with Chris Olley of six by seven on Performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network.
