  • Ep99 Sleep in Perimenopause: 4 Sleep Friends & 4 Sleep Foes for Better Sleep

Is sleep feeling a little more unpredictable than it used to?

Maybe you're exhausted when you go to bed but can't switch your brain off. Maybe you're waking at 2am, getting too hot in the night, or finding yourself staring at the clock wondering how you're going to function tomorrow.

And then there’s motherhood, work, family life and everything else that can make a good night's sleep feel completely out of your control.

In this episode, Amanda explores the idea of sleep friends and sleep foes, not as another list of rules to follow, but as a way of becoming curious about what helps or hinders your sleep during perimenopause.

You can't control everything that happens during the night. You can't control your hormones, your children waking up, the foxes outside or your partner's snoring!

But you can influence some of the signals you're giving your body throughout the day.

    In this episode, Amanda explores:

🌅 Morning light: why getting natural daylight early in the day can help support your circadian rhythm and give your body a clear signal that it's time to wake up.

🚶‍♀️ Movement: how moving your body during the day helps create a clearer distinction between being awake and being asleep.

⏰ Rhythm and routine: why your body loves predictable signals and how gently re-establishing your daily rhythm after the chaos of summer can support sleep.

🌙 A simple wind-down ritual: creating a little transition between the busyness of the day and getting ready for sleep, without needing a complicated 45-minute bedtime routine.

☕ Caffeine: becoming a sleep detective and noticing whether your afternoon coffee or tea is affecting your sleep.

🍷 Alcohol: why alcohol can affect sleep quality and why curiosity is more useful than guilt or rigid rules.

📱 Evening stimulation: how emails, social media, TV, news and the general busyness of modern life can leave your brain feeling wired when you're trying to sleep.

🔥 Overheating: particularly relevant if you're experiencing hot flushes or night sweats during perimenopause.

And perhaps most importantly, Amanda talks about worrying about sleep itself, that frustrating cycle of watching the clock, counting how many hours you have left and becoming increasingly anxious about not sleeping.

If you're navigating perimenopause, motherhood, disrupted sleep, night sweats, low energy or the general chaos of midlife, this episode is for you.

  • Ep 98 Unusual Perimenopause Symptoms You Might Not Recognise + How to Prepare for Your GP Appointment

In this episode of the Happy Thriving Mums Podcast, Amanda shares more about her own experience of perimenopause, including some of the symptoms she didn't initially realise could be connected to hormonal changes.

Following on from the previous episode about the overlap between perimenopause symptoms and the everyday symptoms of motherhood, Amanda explores some of the less obvious things that can happen during perimenopause. From brain fog and rage to changes in mood, caffeine and alcohol sensitivity, and even unusual tingling sensations.

She also talks honestly about anhedonia, a symptom where you lose interest in or enjoyment of things that used to make you happy, and reflects on how this has shown up at different points in her experience of motherhood and perimenopause.

This episode isn't just about recognising symptoms.

If your perimenopause symptoms are starting to affect your quality of life, Amanda talks through how you can prepare for a conversation with your GP, including what information to gather, what questions you might want to ask and how to make the most of your appointment.

    In this episode we explore:

👉 What perimenopause can actually feel like beyond the more commonly discussed symptoms

👉 Some unusual or unexpected perimenopause symptoms you might not immediately connect with hormonal changes

👉 Anhedonia and losing interest or enjoyment in things you previously loved

👉 When it might be time to speak to your GP

👉 How to prepare for a perimenopause or menopause appointment

One of the biggest messages from this episode is that you don't have to simply put up with symptoms that are making everyday life harder.

Perimenopause is different for every woman. Symptoms can vary enormously, change over time and overlap with the realities of motherhood, stress, work and everyday life.

This isn't about diagnosing yourself from a podcast. If you're experiencing symptoms that are affecting your quality of life, it's worth having a conversation with an appropriate healthcare professional about what's happening for you.

  • Ep 97 Perimenopause Symptoms vs Motherhood: Is It Perimenopause or Just Mum Life?

Are you feeling more tired, emotional, forgetful or overwhelmed than usual and wondering “Is this perimenopause, or am I just exhausted from being a mum?”

You’re not imagining it — and you’re certainly not alone.

In this episode of the Happy Thriving Mums Podcast, we’re exploring the confusing overlap between perimenopause symptoms and the realities of motherhood.

Because when you're in your 40s, life can already be a lot. You might be juggling children, work, relationships, caring responsibilities, the mental load, mum guilt and a thousand other things… while your hormones are changing in the background.

So how do you know what’s causing the way you feel?

The truth is, sometimes you can’t neatly separate perimenopause from motherhood. Life isn't divided into little boxes. Your hormones, sleep, stress, family life and everything else happening around you can all influence how you feel. All at the same time.

    In this episode, Amanda explores:

👉 The most common signs and symptoms of perimenopause

👉 Why perimenopause symptoms can be so difficult to recognise

👉 Why low confidence and self-esteem can feel particularly challenging in midlife

👉 The overlap between perimenopause and motherhood symptoms

👉 How the mental load and “mother load” can affect your wellbeing

👉 The additional pressures of being part of the sandwich generation

👉 Why tracking your symptoms can help you spot patterns and trends

👉 When it’s important to speak to your GP or another health professional

👉 Why asking for help and prioritising your own wellbeing isn't selfish

Midlife is messy. Life is a blend of all the roles we carry, and sometimes the symptoms of motherhood and perimenopause can look remarkably similar.

If you're experiencing symptoms that are interfering with your everyday life, speak to your GP or an appropriate healthcare professional.

You can also use a perimenopause symptom checker and symptom tracker to start recording what you're experiencing and look for patterns from the Menopause Charity available here: https://themenopausecharity.org/information-and-support/symptoms/

And, of course, have a browse through the other episodes of the Happy Thriving Mums Podcast, where we explore practical ways to navigate perimenopause, motherhood, wellbeing and all the messy bits of midlife.

As millenial women move through their 40s and beyond, so much can change. Motherhood, careers, relationships, our bodies and perimenopause can all prompt us to question who we are and what we actually want from life.

But perhaps this stage of life isn't about finding your way back to the woman you used to be but moreso about discovering who you are now.

Amanda and Victoria explore what it means to redefine success on your own terms, navigate changing identity, follow your curiosity and passions, and have the courage to create a life that feels genuinely fulfilling.

If you’ve ever thought “Is this really it?”, felt disconnected from the person you used to be, or wondered whether you’re allowed to want something different, this conversation is for you.

👉 Why redefining success can be so important in midlife

👉 The identity shifts that can happen through motherhood

👉 What happens when you stop following the traditional rules of success

👉 Finding the courage to do things differently

    👉 ‘Following the fun’

👉 How our passions can become part of a more fulfilling life

👉 Giving yourself permission to live life on your own terms

  • Ep 95: September New Year Vibes? Why Starting Something New Feels So Hard (Especially in Perimenopause)

September can feel like a second New Year. The children go back to school, routines change, and suddenly there’s that familiar urge to reset: exercise more, eat better, spend less time scrolling, make more time for yourself and finally tackle all those things you've been meaning to do.

But what happens when starting something new feels… uncomfortable?

In this episode of Happy Thriving Mums, Amanda reflects on what she learned about herself over the summer: she takes time to warm up to new situations and find her groove.

From navigating the summer holidays to actually swimming in the sea, Amanda explores why unfamiliar situations can trigger feelings of anxiety, worry and discomfort — and why this doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong.

She also looks at how this can relate to perimenopause, when changes such as brain fog, hot flushes, disrupted routines and unfamiliar symptoms can leave you wondering what is happening to your body.

Most importantly, this episode is a reminder that you don't have to throw yourself into change overnight.

Whether you're starting a new exercise routine, changing how you eat, spending less time on social media or simply trying to prioritise rest, small, consistent steps can help you gradually find your groove.

    In this episode, Amanda explores:

✨ Why new and unfamiliar situations can make us feel anxious or uncomfortable

✨Why it can take time to “find your feet” when something changes

✨ How our natural fight-or-flight response can influence how we respond to uncertainty

✨ Why understanding what is happening during perimenopause can make symptoms feel less frightening

✨ Why starting a new exercise or healthy eating habit can feel uncomfortable at first

✨ How small, consistent actions can help new habits become easier

✨ Why taking time to rest can feel surprisingly uncomfortable for busy mums

✨ How to approach a September reset without putting unnecessary pressure on yourself

✨ Why you don't need to change everything at once to start feeling healthier, calmer and more energised

    A little reminder for September:

If you're feeling like you should be doing more, changing more or getting yourself back on track this September, remember:

You are allowed to ease yourself in.

Give yourself time. Give yourself kindness. Take small steps.

You might just find that the thing that feels unfamiliar today becomes the thing that helps you thrive tomorrow.

  • Ep94 Always Bloated, Tired & Anxious? Your Gut Could Be the Missing Piece

Have you ever noticed that stress seems to show up in your stomach?

Perhaps you lose your appetite before a big meeting. Maybe anxiety leaves you craving sugar or comfort food. Or you notice more bloating, constipation, reflux or digestive discomfort when life feels particularly busy.

That’s because your brain and gut are constantly communicating.

In this episode of the Happy Thriving Mums podcast Amanda explores the gut-brain connection and why it can become even more important during perimenopause.

During perimenopause, fluctuating oestrogen, disrupted sleep, increased stress and changes in inflammation can all influence this conversation. It’s one reason why many women in their 40s and beyond may experience changes in digestion, food tolerance, bowel habits, energy and emotional wellbeing—and simply find themselves thinking:

“I don’t quite feel like myself.”

    In this episode, Amanda shares:

👉What the gut-brain connection is and how your brain and gut communicate👉Why stress can affect digestion, appetite and gut symptoms👉How the pressures of motherhood and constantly being “on” can influence your body👉Why perimenopause may bring changes to digestion and gut health👉How fluctuating oestrogen can affect the gut microbiome and gut lining👉Why your gut microbiome matters for immune, gut and brain health👉How food provides information for both your body and the bacteria that support your health👉Why looking after your gut isn’t only about what you eat👉Three simple ways to support your gut-brain connection without chasing perfection

Because supporting your gut isn’t about achieving perfect digestion or following another restrictive health plan.

It’s about creating the conditions where your brain and body can communicate more effectively—and work together rather than against one another.

If you’re a busy mum navigating perimenopause, feeling stressed, overwhelmed or unlike yourself, this episode will help you understand why your body may be responding the way it is—and remind you that small, consistent habits can make a meaningful difference.

Remember, thriving isn’t about feeling happy all the time or having everything together. It’s about building the habits, strength and resilience that help you keep moving forward—even when life feels messy.

If this episode resonated with you, please follow the Happy Thriving Mums podcast, leave a review or share it with another mum who might need to hear it.

Summer holidays can sound idyllic in theory: lazy mornings, family adventures, endless sunshine and making beautiful memories together.

But real life? It can be a little different.

If you’re a mum, you’ll know that six weeks of school holidays can also mean sibling arguments, constant snacks, screen-time negotiations, keeping everyone entertained, and the feeling that you’re somehow responsible for making every day amazing.

And when you’re already navigating the mental load, work, family life and the changes of perimenopause, it can all feel a little too much.

In this episode of Happy Thriving Mums, I’m sharing five surprisingly simple things I’ve done differently this summer that have genuinely made the holidays feel lighter, calmer and more enjoyable.

Not because I’ve suddenly mastered motherhood. Far from it!

But because I’ve stopped trying to make the summer perfect and started paying attention to the small things that help me feel better too.

    We’ll explore:

✨ Planning without over-planning – why having a loose plan with plenty of buffer time has worked so much better for me than either having every day organised or having no plan at all.

✨ Creating little luxuries – the simple pleasures, from a frothy coffee to eating dinner outside, that can make an ordinary day feel a little more special.

✨ Decluttering your physical space – and why clearing out the things you’ve been putting off can create more than physical space; it can create mental space too.

✨ Actually allowing yourself to rest – stepping away from the constant doing and giving yourself permission to sit, read, watch a film or simply be with your family.

✨ Saying yes to fun – letting go of the need to be practical, sensible or organised all the time and allowing yourself to join in with the moments your children will remember.

Along the way, I’ll also share the three things I come back to again and again to help me feel more grounded through the summer.

Looking after yourself in motherhood doesn't always need to mean adding another thing to your to do list.

Sometimes it means doing less, noticing more and giving yourself permission to enjoy the life you’re already living.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the summer holidays, choose just one of these ideas to try this week.

You might be surprised by how much difference a small shift can make.

  • Ep92 Three Things That Keep Your Body Young After 40 (that no body talks about)

What does it really mean to stay healthy, strong and independent after 40?

When we think about fitness in midlife, the conversation often centres around weight loss, calories, hormones and strength training. While building muscle is incredibly important during perimenopause, true vitality is about so much more than how we look.

In this episode of Perimenopause, Motherhood and Welness for Happy Thriving Mums, we're exploring how to build a body you trust, one that helps you feel confident, capable and ready for whatever life throws your way.

Amanda shares three often-overlooked markers of healthy aging that can help you move with confidence, improve your brain-body connection and support your long term wellbeing through perimenopause and beyond.

This episode is a reminder that fitness isn't about chasing the body you had in your twenties, it's about building the strength, resilience and confidence to enjoy the life you're living now.

    This episode covers:

    • Why vitality is about capability, not just appearance

    • How to shift your focus from weight loss to healthy ageing

    • Why speed is an important but often forgotten part of fitness after 40

    • How improving your brain-body connection supports confidence and movement

    • Why balance training becomes increasingly important during perimenopause

    • What your vestibular system is and how it helps prevent falls and improve coordination

    • Fun, practical ways to improve reaction time, coordination and mobility

    • Why movement should feel joyful and not like punishment

    • How building a capable body can help you stay active, independent and adventurous for years to come

As women move through perimenopause, our goals often begin to shift. Rather than exercising purely to change how we look, we can start training for the life we want to live.

    That means developing:

    ✔️ Strength

    ✔️ Speed

    ✔️ Balance

    ✔️ Coordination

    ✔️ Confidence

Because don’t you want a  body that allows you to say yes to adventures, play with your children, travel confidently and move through life with ease?

If today's episode resonated with you, I'd love you to follow the podcast, leave a review, or share it with another mum who might need to hear this conversation.

  • Ep 90 Alcohol and Perimenopause: Why Your Evening Glass Feels Different Now

Have you noticed that alcohol affects you differently than it used to?

Maybe one glass of wine now leaves you waking at 3am, feeling anxious, exhausted or irritable the next day. If you're in your 40s and navigating perimenopause, you're not imagining it.

In this episode of Happy Thriving Mums, Amanda explores the relationship between alcohol and perimenopause, explaining why hormonal changes can make your body respond differently to alcohol and how this can impact your sleep, mood, energy and blood sugar.

This isn't an episode about giving up alcohol or feeling guilty for enjoying a drink. Instead, it's an invitation to become curious about what your body is telling you and to make choices that help you feel your best.

    Amanda explores:

✨ Why alcohol affects women differently during perimenopause✨ The connection between oestrogen, alcohol metabolism and hormone changes✨ How alcohol can impact your sleep quality and contribute to 2–3am waking✨ The link between alcohol, blood sugar, cravings and energy crashes✨ Why that evening glass of wine often represents something deeper than the drink itself✨ Simple experiments to help you discover what works best for your body✨ Ways to create that "Friday night feeling" without relying on alcohol

Your body isn't working against you, it's changing.

Perimenopause is an opportunity to listen more closely to what helps you feel energised, calm and confident. Rather than focusing on restriction, focus on curiosity. Small changes can have a big impact on how you sleep, how you feel and how you show up every day.
