Mark Lakeman Bio: (B: 1961 – )

Mark Lakeman is the founder of the City Repair Project in Portland, Oregon and served as the Co-Director of Creative Vision from 1995 to 2008. He has also been a long time board member as well as a core member and project leader for the annual Village Building Convergence. Mark is also the founder and principal of Communitecture, Inc, a cutting edge design firm with sustainable building and planning projects at many scales. These highly popular projects include such social and ecological innovations as The ReBuilding Center, numerous ecovillage projects and infill co-housing examples, and many projects involving low income and homeless people in the development of sustainable community solutions.

This is the third session of my Permaculture Living Lands Trust Listening Series. Here I am talking with Buzz Ferver of Perfect Circle Farm in VT. A great conversation here with Brian Fagan professor of Archaeology at University of California in Santa Barbara, author of many of my favorite books on early civilizations and climate and environmental histories. A lively conversation with Natalie Topa a Regenerative Permaculture Designer working internationally on a broad range of projects, providing humanitarian Permaculture design services for displaced people, in Africa, Myanmar and the Middle East. Natalie and I discuss her background in Urban Planning and Economics and how her work is aligned with much of our regional focus.We touch on Naomi Klein and policies for Solutionaries. Natalie shares apartment and city living methods for permaculture lifestyles and the need for policy change and not so much is the need to provide different services but rather to be providing services differently. We discuss Vandana Shiva, Eco-Feminism & Natural Building and the need for socio-cultural levels for change . Natalie will be guest teaching in our upcoming Permaculture Certification course

Dale and I explore his history in Permaculture and plant propagation and latest work with us at the Permaculture Living Lands Trust. We discuss the John Hershey trees, see links below for more on those plantings. Dale gives a introduction to his explorations into biochar and combining conservation with production. "This meta-analysis tends to confirm the presence of an association between exposure to magnetic fields and leukaemia among people who reside in the vicinity of high voltage transmission electric lines of > or = 49 kV. There is consistency across studies. Measures of exposure used in the studies were either distance from the lines or calculated fields estimated from pertinent line features. The results apply to adults as well as to children."

A correction on a number I give for how many people died in Hiroshima from the dropping of Little Boy, not 10,000 but more like 66,000.
