My uni friend wrote a memoir

In my very first episode, I have with me Daribha Lyndem, a recently published author and a tax bureaucrat. Dari and I have known each other since the time we were studying Masters in North Campus in the University of Delhi. We’ve come a long way from being next door neighbours at our hostel complex to I being a witness at her court marriage in Mumbai where she lives today with her husband. 

Her first book, NAME PLACE ANIMAL THING, just got out last year in the midst of the pandemic. Written as a fictional memoir of a girl called D, the book reads like a semi autobiographical coming of age in Shillong (Meghalaya), the OG capital of British Northeast. It has been shortlisted in the JCB prize for fiction in 2021. 

In this episode, we talk about growing up in Shillong, writing about home after considerable years of distance from the place and the debate about who gets to write about the Northeast.
