  • Four Weddings and an Elvis
This is a review of this play put on by our local theater company. I am generally get impressed by any talent that I know is way beyond my own. I can report that this leads to enjoying a greater percentage of everything. It also means I am in the right frame of mind to see layers of success working in to achieve a greater and more sophisticate, polished product. What i appreciated here was the intelligent understanding of audience expectations, analysing them accepting them and then exploiting them. The pop culture, indeed the cringe when central institution like marriage are lampooned by a Vegas kitsch, drops your guard as classical devices are snuck in. The first of four acts, a wedding for each, giving you the impression that there will be nothing so see here, move on intellectually, does some heavy lifting of getting key characters onto the set. This includes Elvis. Now I note this is a full constume 70s Elvis and the subsequent Elvis references are light with an action or a phrase. Good audience education, then pulling back to let other devices grow. I only appreciated this on reflection. The second act expanded the dimensionality. In Greek plays this is done with the chorus, here a more extreme presence was introduced that recast our acceptance of the central thesis as we rejected the new entrant. The casual celebrant, shared the audience's position through a measure of disconnect to the new thesis of feeding celebrity. The device of characters analysing and appreciating situations was slowly established until in the third act, new characters were introduced and interest sustained as there was an agenda of finding out more, that was transferred to the audience. I must say some of story conjecture, then informing was very precisely executed. There was an economy at one level that left little margin for error. As you were concentrating, the fourth act was like a magic trick and genuinely surprising. Like a magic trick, there is a pause and then reconstruction and detailed analysis. It sounds heavy and boring, however there are many quickly crafted or rebadged fast food equivalent instances of art that are really nothing more than a byline competing for attention. I think that as the high level synthesis is nailed, the actors really attended to the central task, which the audience was unaware of. I think the big star, industrial art from Hollywood achieves this but it is not and intelligent team effort of people live in the room with you. Do go and see this. It closes next week so you will have to get on a flight to Sydney Australia pretty soon. MP4 recording     MP3 recording -- -- Your browser does not support the audio element.

This is the start of reading a 70 page Wikipedia paper. The new information I found was that his family had backed DC electricity in their factories in Munich and had effectively backed the wrong horse in the electricity wars. The need to avoid military service explained the renunciation of German Citizenship and the move to Switzerland. I also have a more complete understanding of his approach knowing his was an admirer of Kant. To be frank, I don't know anyone in my circle who has any understanding of his work. However studying his works, and knowing how he was wrestling withe Philosophy of Newton and moderating Leibniz you can see his attitude to Newton. I also see some Kant in the structure of his papers, and even in his approach to the Manhattan project. I think, and bare in mind I am no one of note, that his thought experiment architecture really reads over from Kant's philosophical reasoning. Bare in mind the investigation of magnetic fields generated by currents was a direct result of examination of Kant's ideas. Having listened to teachers explain ideas with "Einstein" and point to a picture of the chap, I have come to the realization that he has become part of the cultural machinery, and an icon or part of the language like any brand. We have so many confused concepts like beer and nationalism and cars, just to name a few. A real case in point is an incorrect statement in a text book and a few pages earlier a picture of Einstein. Now in practice this was somehow a language I wasn't tuned into. So a lot people explain Einstein with the word Einstein. I know that Einstein talked with a Swabean accent, and many of his comments are a gentle acceptance of this German in joke. Another aspect to understanding the Einstein story is to unpack the school culture at the time. His son who was committed to a Swiss asylum and his various marriages adds shades of grey to the story. He could only solve so much I suppose. MP4 recording     MP3 recording -- -- Your browser does not support the audio element.

  • New Scientist 27 Oct_4
This is a marathon read. There is a collective look at memory with various authors contributing articlettes finishing with false memories. The key point I took from this is that the idea of human memory looks at the social currency of what happens in the past. Thus we have accounts that act as a record. We also place key significance on authorship and judge hearsay evidence as so low we discount it. The story on Quantum Computing by using Atomic Force Microscopes is a little sad actually. I have questions about distinguishing signal from noise. I do feel this might be the way do things in the future, but the field has so many ways to get their , my personal favorite, and it is truly personal as would have to be the only person ever to think so is that FeMoCo structures in nitrogen fixing bacteria are just so beautifully structured it just smells as if it should be part of the solution. Finally, something that makes reading pages and pages of not really good enough to be science paid off: Charles Darwin thought the sons of Blacksmiths would develop heavier arms. I have to check it out. Lamark being mystic is an insight, but really everyone was. This was the key move in making Michael Faraday the first 'scientist'. However if you dig deep enough he was a damaged then rebuilt man of humble origins, and at the heart of his understanding also mystic. The discussion of why aren't land animals ever in 6 and 8 legged varieties really was rather facile science. MP4 recording     MP3 recording -- -- Your browser does not support the audio element.

  • 202 Philosophical Questions
As I have laboured through a lay persons approach to philosophy this conversation starter website really takes my breath away. In a sense, if you are engaging in philosophy and discussion for some false reason or to create a false impression or to deceive, then I don't think it is a major improvement on bland ignorance. I am interested in philosophy for two basic reasons. The routes of science; mass and time have emerged from philosophy and our concepts are coloured be our depth or shallowness of our understanding of their origins. There is a difference from experience in the domain of the familiar, and the experience informed by scholarship. You know this as you work relationships in the schoolyard and the difference when as a parent you aid you kid get through those same experiences. From a parent's perspective you understand the need for immersive experience as an innocent and the need for self discovery to embark on a journey to see the complexity of your situations. There is also some artistry in some of these questions, by post loading the key question with an easy to reduce question that then directs the approach to the main question. Quantum mechanics gets a key mention as a no-go zone. The question is asked in such away as to lock in misconceptions. It is unsurprising that the difficulty in answering these questions professionally is not the maths but the social framework of the question. • Quantum Cafe
This is a Podcast while driving PWD as I trip to and fro to another medical appointment. I was wanting to get into the Quantum mechanics of electrons in glass. As we are in a relaxed reflective mood, we feel the sense of Silicon crystals as an opera house concert hall where the waves reverberate between the walls, in contrast by putting an variable angle and length bridge between the silicon atoms we make SiO2 and change the atmosphere to a much more intimate setting. I can see this as I have watched how photons make glass glow and grow old. I am also aware of how people draw a distinction between an actual object and a mathematical solution that describes that object. I can report that working in the field that rather than distinction there is profound unity of these manifestation of reality. I can see people seeing different things by working within the confines of particular solution set. I can offer the experience that as you can absorb different frame works of understanding, it is not that you can have access to different angles on the same topic. By combining and integrating and accommodating solutions you move to a stereoscopic view. That is combining and working through views you increase a sense of dimensionality. In a deep sense understanding 2D and 3D gives you an extra dimension, not 4D but the x of xD the higher order dimensionality of dimensions. I remember seeing alternative traffic lights in a Melbourne museum. It is a clock timer, about 60 cm radius, it takes 60 secs for a revolution, sometimes 5 minutes. The time is not displayed but regions are Green, Amber and Red. It was a different solution in different space. It is an artifact that may appear as a passive relic, but it is also having an active role: It is signalling to the traffic of museum goers directing those who can integrate past solutions into the continuum of the present to further thought, and to those who are operating on the binary paradigm of 'buy that now' and 'give that a thumbs down' a message to turn back towards a more consistent existence. In a sense electrons are solutions, and they illuminate our perceptions, our understanding of their environments. People are solutions, but there is a little more complexity at play here. • Podomation Update - 27
This is quiet up date where I experiment with the reverse order recording developed for synthetic lessons and use it for read-with-comment podcasts. In these podcasts I read a magazine until I get tired. Now it seems strange but these activities wear me out as I have to concentrate. There is also benefit as I have to train to recall the content for write up. The idea is that after reading you record a summary and this is spliced to the front of the podcast describing whats in it. It all worked we in prototype but I lost the updated code when the computer shut down. I have a really annoying anti virus called AV which is troubling to disable. My experience is that it like Mal ware, and gets under my feet. Let's hope things are getting back to normal as my sons have stopped down loading from Steam. • Things rarely mentioned in Quantum Mechanics
During my Quantum journey of discovery it was normal for those around me to not get the significance of what I was understanding. Instead of listening there was a preference to those looking in to make some conclusion on how they were more socially acceptable according to fashion. I am trying not to judge but unpack the run of interaction which was unremarkable at the time, but ultimately left me with some feature, some behaviour that was distinctly unworldly. These phenomena would be a transmission window in a gas or a sudden reduction in the amount of effort to cool things down as you passed certain temperature. Gradually a feeling developed around what these things, atoms and molecules ... all the way up to us ... further to stars, galaxies and the universe and the Universe. So, when you get to know a mathematical function like y = 3x + 4 and others like quadratics, cubics, sines, arctan, log and so forth it is a real delight to find that little things are little functions. The functions are solutions to things vanishing at the edge of the universe, and being not too small and not too large so there is just enough of the stuff there. So where people in general see a speck there is a function. Its not hard to imagine but as you gain experience you can see what imagine work with what you experience. From this flows gentle understanding. It doesn't mix with particle dogma, that if you pick a tread of the thinking behind departs from a chain of understanding and moves into thinking that is charged with social values to link ideas. Ultimately people who have busy schedules to fill, give a small slice of time as there is so much for really important people to be doing, scan the shut down premixed thinking and say "I know really educated people, and they know others and they make up an exclusive group you are not a member off, so therefore that phenomena they are not worried about but you appear to be enjoying is really confirmation of my membership of the knowledge club and you not." Well, let that thought bubble pass, and lets look at how we gently pull apart the wave equation and how gas stops rotating at cold temperatures and how computers work. I am not the Shakespeare of Quantum Mechanics but I think we need one. MP4 recording     MP3 recording -- -- Your browser does not support the audio element.
