  • New Scientist 15 Sep _2
As before I am writing a more detailed blog report for each New Scientist podcast as part of general brain recall and coordination practice. Sheep Migration: It seems they just put GPS tracker on these bighorn sheep then on moose then pulled out any data. I am more interested the the Seven sheep who knew genetically what to do. Hate speech detector: It is a bit of a head scratcher here. Surely this means that the socially responsible thing here is to have keen human oversight not just machine oversight if we can make an effort. Face Recognition: I wasn't that sympathetic before reading the article, but it really won me over. Indeed flawed technology, flawed institutions and flawed people seems to be sufficient locus of flaws to put a halt to it. I do think it is probably/definitely evil. Comment on the Right wing red neck bubble needs to be counselled by using the idea of data analysis. I really think it is an argument for good education. I think it is a really worry when scientist think aloud on these things. Drilling a hole in the space craft: The whole thing actually makes me feel sick. My view is that someone wanted to murder all the astronauts. A retirement village for astronomers, nice but sooo awkward The Chemical Brain guy really is the stuff of my nightmares. I honestly think he is doing heaps of damage but I think it is shows a need for a real health check of lab psychology by a third party - science needs a division of power style rethink. I feel sorry for the other research groups in Glasgow Gut problems is it FODMAP, well the debunking stuff is hard to put up. Again I think this all shows a frightening superstitious society that basically burns rationalists. I like some of the quotes, it seems a really good way to round off the reading to a Philosopher. My favourite is along the lines, if you plan a surprise for your wife, plan to be surprised. I also like _ I am very fond of truth but I am less fond of martyrdom. MP4 recording     MP3 recording -- -- Your browser does not support the audio element. Some typing / transcription practice Quotes God gave us the gift of life; it is up to us to give ourselves the gift of living well. -I personally don't give attach any practical evidential significance to the existence or not existence of God Judge a ma by his questions rather than his answers Tears are the silent language of grief The are of medicine consists in amusing the patient while nature cures the disease - I think this is now trite given the amount of enlightenment science that is now with s. it si better to risk saving a guilty man than to condemn an innocent one. Appreciation is a wonderful thing : It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well. - I think this now really true with sympathetic mirror neurons, it is a really positive thing Friendship is the marriage of the soul, and this marriage is liable to divorce It is difficult to free fools from the chains they revere - now this is a really powerful and measured quote Faith consists in believing when it is beyond the power of reason to believe. It is not love that should be depicted as blind, but self-love. Each player must accept the cards life deals him or her: bur once they are in hand, he or she alone must decide how to play the cards in order to win the game. Man is free at the moment he wishes to be. Common sense is not so common What is tolerance> It is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty and error; let us pardon reciprocally each other;s folly - that is the first law of nature. Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities. Optimism is the madness of insisting that all is well when we are miserable . By appreciation, we make excellence in others our own property. Opinion has caused more trouble on this little earth than plagues or earthquakes. Love is a canvas furnished by nature and embroidered by imagination. Life is thickly sown with thorns, and i know no other remedy than to pass quickly through them. The longer we dwell on our misfortunes, the greater is their power to harm us. To hold a pen is to be at war. Prejudices are what fools use for reason. Paradise was made for tender hearts; hell for loveless hearts. Doubt is not a pleasant condition , but certainty is absurd.

Newton. hedonism and free love. It seems some upper class philosophy of convience is at play here. I like the turn of phrase - facts as a solvent of irrational positions. MP4 recording     MP3 recording -- -- Your browser does not support the audio element.

I have found this guy total amazing. Others also think so as evidenced to active publishing and institutions devoted to the sage. It sort of explains why scientists are reluctant to engage in philosophy debates. Newton's _ I feign no hypothesis_ seems to be the touch stone that has hurtled civilization into the modern world. It is new dimension I bring to reading the early Roman writers. MP4 recording     MP3 recording -- -- Your browser does not support the audio element.
