May 27, 2020Austraila 2There are lots of things I knew, but lots of things I found out by reading the wikipedia article on this. As an Aussie, there is nothing outrageously inaccurate but it does tend to tick off the standard self myths we tell ourselves. May 26, 2020Yemen 4Well after getting through the politics other drivers of this nightmare emerge. The population is out of control and they are running out of water, whilst diverting alot of agriculture to growning qat a leaf drug. With a highly tribal society this seems very hard to speak sense to any one coherent group. I absolutely like the sport of camel jumping, partly as it allows women as much as men to jump over as many camels as they can. As a camel, as long as you weren't the last camel and hit by incompetent jumpers it would not be all that bad as a sport. Dropping the legal marriage age to 9 is a bit of a problem for me. Yemen did host the university on the Red sea that was the home to algebra which is a contrasting gift to the world. Saudi Arabia has built a wall to keep the Yemeni out and this is amazing given the walls in the US, and Israel. Also included in this Post is the Yemeni national anthem. I like its use of the idea that it echos and repeats, then I am left wondering as it refers to Martrys and defeating any foreign intervention. May 24, 2020Yemen 1I have never been shocked by so much history I never imagined. Meet characters like the "Supressor" "The Perfect" "The one with log sidelocks". They build and ancient dam and then it gets breached in a battle. They beat the Romans so well it is not recorded in Roman history. But what is really amazing is that Yemen is the fertile bit of the Arabian penisula. I am amazed. MP4 recording MP3 recording -- -- Your browser does not support the audio element....more0minPlay
May 23, 2020Falling of a CliffIf you are young, or an engineer this podcast is not for you. I use the allegory of a wildebeest following a path that leads to a cliff face and the role of a tree sticking out the side of the cliff that mean some survive. More concrete factual podcasts comming up that cover a more factual content. MP4 recording MP3 recording -- -- Your browser does not support the audio element....more0minPlay
