  • Making the sun
A podcast while driving tackles the design problem of making a one to a trillion scale model of the sun that actually gives a sense of scale. Not there yet by any measure. MP4 recording     MP3 recording -- -- Your browser does not support the audio element.

  • For David _ Classroom Earth
David is a good work friend and this podcast might just help him get up to speed, or likely I am still a way off hitting the mark. Now it is framed and produced while doing a cardiac / neuro rehab walk down an up the steep Glenbrook gorge. The production quality hopefully is a tad better as I am using a lapel microphone which has taken a bit to get the clothes rustle out of it all. There is also the odd "Gidday" to the odd couple of people walking their dog as I appear now absolutely totally mad. For those following it is moving ever so slowly up on the objective a one-to-a-trillion scale classroom wrapped around the earth. Those who have followed progress in robotics, mathematics and other fields over the years will be comfortable with the gradual addition of know-how transforming the proposition. Here Vantablack the new nano material should totally transform the experience, however this sets the entry point price at over $1 000 per star. David will be amused, if he can handle the long podcasts at the lateral moves in play with the new New Zealand cheese Schedar and the Paraguay air force all put in there. As said, this is just a baby step in getting on board and building skills. MP4 recording     MP3 recording -- -- Your browser does not support the audio element.

Actually quite a good chapter on Babylon. The originators of the Zodiac and the degree minute 1/60 system. It was good to hear about the various tower systems and the link between astrology and astronomy the former powering the the later. Probably the most accurate tower I can find depicted. The Egyptian method of using a horse to measure the diameter of the sun is almost monty python. I find no other references to it in the literature: so this is a truly fabulous book. The description of the Egyptian Big Bang theory is jaw dropping and just so stunning. I just don't know how to handle it in polite society. • Bronwyn data dump
Bronwyn is doing a fantastic PhD on the phthaline platinum drug transport. It is really great to chat through areas I have committed to memory, and I am slowly learning not to switch to trigger recall, which unfortunately I have to do ask the next question. So I put the recall exercise to the next day after a little checking and refresh. Phthalic acid anhydride is one of the most cute molecules. Phenol Phthaline just really fun in the way it has an internal world of electrons and an external reserve of protons that as the are shoved on or taken away this indicator twists or lets its electrons hang out there. It is a never ending story as I have to recall now the acid theory. Thanks Bronwyn. what an exciting PhD! MP4 recording     MP3 recording -- -- Your browser does not support the audio element.

This is at times brilliant and times just doesn't reach a semblance of scientific understanding. The use of Shakespeare to discuss eclipses is a master stroke. The understanding of how solar winds create resonant molecular emissions is, I think, a statement of the paucity of our education system that we can allow such poor understanding to be waved through. There are several things at work here. Firstly an ion current generates its own containment field leading to streamers and in the event of higher pressures lightening bolts. Secondly the cross section for collision goes up by 1 000 to 100 000 times when the atom or molecule has a poorly held electron that can't radiate due to quantum symmetry that make such transition forbidden. That is rather than the atom or molecule losing energy and the critical unit of angular momentum by changing shape to the ground state, it changes to a shape like the ground state only with additional energy. The similarity in shape means the option of folding in on itself a second time is not there as it is the wrong symmetry. Hence you get the polar lights and get to feel the quantum mechanics as a planetary immersive experience. A little bit of info about it taking a 'Moonth' for the moon to travel around the earth. Further more a week is a quarter moonth and thus two weeks is pretty standard for the minimum rearrangement of conjunctions line ups to occur might not have gone astray here. The mixing in the "Green Flash" at sun set with the Polar lights is hard to fathom why you would do this. I am rather saddened in fact that this was something so many of my generation were told to look out for, yet now if you try to pass it on, the fact that kids don't get the instant gratification from this, they seek the instant gratification of finding the proof that you are a crazy old man. It goes like this I understand. At sunset, the greater atmospheric depth means that there is a dramatic removal of blue light ie the rose or reddish colour that you see. Then the atmosphere has a refractive index or in other words a factor by which it slows the light down. So diamond with a refractive index 0f 2.42 slows the light down by 2.42, What happens is that light itself does not slow down but the electrons in the lattice absorb the lights resonate and reradiate it. It like having a running race with breath checks at sufficient time that the whole race loses speed. Now if there is a temperature and density gradient, or a moisture gradient you will form a mirage or planar wave guide that will work at the precise refractive index, and the sun will launch light into the wave guide. However due to the absorption bands of both water and air the blue green end is closer to the resonance that is tying up the light and will be guided to your eyes. My reflection on all of this is where understanding is lacking we the human race can fill in the gaps with lateral thinking. This leads to joining the dots to make pictures in the sky and explain why so and so should live a fantastically wealthy life while you are enslaved. RLT random lateral thinking is a kind of an intellectual place holder, so we can focus on one thing at a time. It is a tool, but for some it has become a prison. Stonehenge and so many structures. I was skeptical that churches where aligned to the sun, but a little internet research and I find that they are. This is perhaps the benefit of wide fact reading. You can argue with the observation that a ruler had an offending building razed and rebuilt so as to align with the sun. It is hard to think of other features such as magnetic compass orientation that had not yet been discovered being used. Of note for its lack of reference is the South African Voortrekker monument that has a shard of light illuminate the central statue at the designated time of year. I am surprised that obelisks were not mentioned. As I research I find out a totally new phenomena, Zodiacal light from interplanetary dust MP4 recording     MP3 recording -- -- Your browser does not support the audio element.

  • Oval Orbit - Fair Pizza
This podcast while driving attempts to fill in the mystery that powers the tome "Chasing the Sun". Basically you have heard of the "Dot com" boom. Well Pythagoras started the "Dot" boom with his Monads which lasted 2500 years until it inspired binary and digital maths by Leibnitz. If you haven't heard of it, that is just part of the deal of having a narrow education system. At any rate if the Dot was the next big thing or actually incredibly small thing you might have been wise to invest in the latest thing the circle and the sphere. Now for those astute among us I note the Quantum Dot and quantum computing and also the clever observation that the dot has come full circle. Now you may think it is a silly gibe to mention operating systems a la our friends at Apple. It is not so silly as the operating system was installed on the processor called religion and a succession of up grades flowed through with the Heavenly circles, the so many circles and the circle on a nifty sun circle organizer. In this sense, seen from a modern marketing perspective Kepler's ellipse was in marketing terms disruptive. The ellipse was a bad circle, if you would like all eggs are bad because egg shapes are bad except if you look at them end on. Then Kepler marketed them with the 3 Laws. In a sense 3 was the new 1 or 10 if you took the commandments into account. Newton chipped in with 3 Laws, then Bohr came in with 3 Postulates, while Einstein didn't get it with just 2 postulates which were in fact postulates rather than laws, but don't let that get in the way of our job of programming you to think just enough to be useful. So Kepler Australianized were 1: Wonky circles 2: There will be a riot if you don't cut the out of shape pizza fairly and 3: Factor in an extra square root of the distance travel time for longer trips. The second half of this podcast is with a natty stereo lapel microphone which has exposed the need for voice training onto of all the neuro rehab I am loaded with. • Chasing the Sun Analysis
Reading into this book, I am struck as to where is the required analysis and scientific understanding one would need to have a balance perspective. I was going to introduce Kepler's laws but I try to dissect exactly what is going on. The academic process that would have prodded this in the direction of a deeper explanation has been suspended. I am also cynical about the reality of academic review had it actually happened and think on balance it is likely to have sucked the life blood out of this book. I find the distinction between the first chapter on Solar Myths hard to distinguish from this chapter on Cultural Season celebrations hard to settle. There is a clear delineation ending with the Sun Dance of the North American native peoples. The interplay between the Pagan and Christian beliefs and the resonance with sacrifice and harm in both the Christian and North American cultures is indeed profound. As a spectrophist I love bone-fires or bonfires lighting up with the calcium lines so enjoyable to read. Hopefully my stamina and diction is improving, very slowly but still improving.
