  • Ep. 51 Racist Experiments

Hi Everyone, hope you are all staying safe during this pandemic. We are continuing our series on the long intertwining history of race, racism, and science. In this episode, the third of four*, we discuss some specific examples of racist scientific misconduct: things like the Tuskegee Experiment and the treatment of Henrietta Lacks and her family.

*We went so long on this episode that we split it in two, with the second part on Racism and IQ coming out on Friday, so look forward to hearing Sean and Nathan rant about that shit for like 40 minutes.

This episode features a promo for Podcast Review Day, a day to review your favorite podcasts on  https://www.podchaser.com/ or Apple Podcasts or wherever! It happens on the 8th of every month. Learn more on twitter @PodRevDay or at  https://www.stephfuccio.com/podrevday.html

    • Ep. 50 Eugenics and Human Genetics

Hi Everyone, hope you are all staying safe during this pandemic. For our 50th full episode, we are continuing our series on the long intertwining history of race, racism, and science. In this episode, the second of three, we discuss racist science in the 20th and 21st century by focusing on eugenics and human genetics. Next time we will talk about specific examples of racist scientific misconduct and racism in IQ.

    • Ep. 49 Racism in Science

Hi Everyone, hope you are all staying safe during this pandemic. The murder of Black people like Breonna Taylor and George Floyd has led to a lot of discussion here at Petri Dish about what we could do with our platform. We decided one of the things we could do was inform our listeners about the long intertwining history of race, racism, and science. In this episode, the first of three, we discuss the early history of modern conceptions of race, going back to the 17th century. Next time we will be discussing eugenics and human genetics.

This episode features a promo for SipNSci, a comedic science podcast centered around Black scientists, some drinks, and a whole lot of science. Find them at @SipNScipod.

What actually happens when you get infected with something? What are the steps your body goes through to protect you? Why do so many illnesses have "flu-like" symptoms? Find out this week as Sean and Nathan dive into the SCIENCE OF SICK(ness)!

We recorded this episode a while ago, so it does not make reference to current (US) events. We here at Petri Dish support protesters and the cause they represent -- an end to racial discrimination against Black people, an end to police brutality, and a restructuring of the USA to a more equitable and equal society. Black lives matter! Thank you everyone, for listening.
