*More About This Episode* Hollywood and the Bible: Love or Hate Relationship?

*Correction to this episode concerning the Hays Code: The Catholics launched the Legion of Decency. The Protestants brought in Willian Hays, the US Postmaster General and Presbyterian elder to watch over the Hays' Code.

In the early days of cinema, churches made more movies than Hollywood. Here's 4 reasons Hollywood has always been engaged with the Bible:

    1. The power of the Bible stories.

    2. Audience awareness. There's a shorthand with the audience when drawing from Christian bestsellers (with the Bible being number one).

    3. Bible stories transcend culture.

    4. Christian audience size. Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" helped prove how huge of an audience there is who take their faith seriously.

Tips for Aspiring Filmmakers (or those who want to make an impact in today's media-driven culture)

    1. Listen to the voices of pop culture. Don't live in a bubble.

    2. Recognize the opportunity. There are so many ways to step into the creative space as a Christian in Hollywood.

    3. Be real. This generation wants authenticity.

    4. Engage with today's culture, even when it's uncomfortable.

    5. Be a patron. Support those in the film industry and get involved.

How resilient are you? As a creative person or a leader – your ability to be resilient and keep going in the face of failure can equal success in the long run. Here's 5 tips to help you succeed.

    1. Don't overthink the failure. Whether you're an actor who didn't get the role you auditioned for or a filmmaker whose pitch fell flat, you may never know what went wrong. Don't overthink it; move on.
    2. Don't take it personally. Try to separate the failure of your project from who you are as a person.

    1. Get objective advice. Get a third-party objective with the maturity and professionalism that you can trust.

    1. At the moment of rejection, keep a cool head. If possible, see if you can ask questions about what you could have done better. That information you acquire can help set you up for future success.

    1. Don't let rejection or failure derail your dream. Your career is much bigger than any single project. You never know when tweaking a concept could work for something else.

    Bonus tips!

    • Should I have a day job? You would be in good company with the many famous creative people who have had day jobs.

The Curse of the Vampire Orchestra is an international orchestra that is reinventing live performance to silent film, performing a live accompaniment to the classic film Nosferatu—A Symphony of Horror (1922). The orchestra's conductor, Philip Shorey, composed the music played by the group. Through this fresh score, the film is reinterpreted with Shorey's use of classic orchestral instrumentation, industrial percussion, electronica, and a full choir.

Philip Shorey Bio Curse of the VampirePhilip Shorey, a graduate of The Institute of Production and Recording in Minneapolis, has worked in the Twin Cities area as a composer for theatre and film since 2003. He has operated as an activist towards the healing of the human heart and strives to work his compositions for this seminal purpose. He is the composer and conductor of the Curse of the Vampire Orchestra, and features theatrical statements for orchestral, choir, electronica, and industrial percussion, set to the classic silent films—Nosferatu (1922) & The Kid (1921).

Philip has traveled the world extensively while performing his toy marionette theatre, The Suitcase Sideshow. *More About This Episode* Ideas on a Deadline – 10 Ways to Be Creative on Demand

Here's Phil's 10 tips to ramp up your creativity:

    1. Make the decision that deadlines matter. Make a commitment to stick to them! Professionalism – on time and on budget.

    2. Get organized. Does your desk look like a nightmare? Develop a system for capturing ideas so you have access for them when you need them the most. Creative ideas are the most fragile things in the world! Write them down.

    3. Learn to say no. Create the margin for reflective, creative time by saying no to certain projects or people.

    4. Start with clarity. Are you missing the mark? Seek clarity before you begin a project. Ask the right questions to know what your client or boss is expecting. Don't assume; ask.

    5. Recognize the power of creative extensions:

    -Design your workspace

    -Light a candle

    -Take a microbreak

    -Work with inspiring people

    6. For the best ideas, go to the source.

    7. Understand the power of a good walk. It's a proven technique that can open up your creativity.

    8. Hold back the flood. Don't start a project too early; give it time.

    9. Consider the role dreams play. Creative connections can happen overnight. Start writing them down.
