There are few surviving records of Studio's final shows from 2018-2020, of which none of these shows can be found online. Mostly because after the events we talked about last time, Studio was prohibited from uploading anything else to their YouTube channel. We knew the writing was on the wall, but when intracollegiate politics reached a breaking point and the COVID-19 pandemic shattered any semblance who was in control, it felt only natural that Studio 4109: LIVE! came to an end.

For many of us, it was the greatest show we'd ever been a part of—it was our family. “Just because you read it in a magazine or see it on the TV screen don't make it factual. See, but everybody wants to believe all about it." Those were words that were sung by Michael Jackson in his 1995 song "Tabloid Junkie." Those words, couldn't be any more true 25 years later, when I woke up the morning of February 23rd, 2020. I was expecting a relaxed brunch with my girlfriend Natalia and some time spent with friends before we made the drive back to my grandparents' suburb outside of Atlanta.

But then the messages were bombarding my phone.

Feminism is multifaceted and just as nuanced in this world where we’re all fishing for labels to put on people. Labels are easy, but they oftentimes come with a troubled past. If feminism means the things our guests discuss, then count me in. Maybe it’s time to stop being an accidental feminist, but an intentional one.

In 2021, feminism still gets a bad rep from tons of people. There’s the crowd that says, “Women should be absolutely equal to men,” or those who say, “Females should just stay in their place—happy wife, happy life.” There’s the women comfortable with being bare-chested and marching for justice, the women who wear massive costumes depicting their private parts, and the women who may dump acid on you for man-spreading on the Metro. But what makes a feminist a feminist?

Am I a feminist in every sense of the word? Are you? Are you not?

When I attended high school in New Mexico, I often ran into some problems. I was most people’s first. First Black friend, more specifically. So how did I code switch, gain friends, and survive some of the micro aggressions that came with being Black in a state where only 2.6% of the entire population looked like me? And how do most Black kids deal with being called an Oreo?

Uncle Melvyn and I sat down and a had a conversation in September 2019, right before I boarded a plane to Spain for the next few months. I was 23-years-old, feeling SUPER clueless and thought I’d talk to the only big brother I’ve ever really had. He told me about the time he was struggling with his own calling. My childhood friend, Tyler Mason, made a big leap. In his last year of undergrad, he dropped his business and pre-medical track degree, put in a lot of work, launched a fashion line and an accompanying pop-up event, and still graduated on time! In this episode, Tyler and I discuss his journey at a small liberal arts university to joining one of the most recognizable fashion brands on the planet: Louis Vuitton.

We also talk about our childhood memories, his first steps into embracing his creativity, his fashion journey, and how his student defeated him in his largest basketball championship game ;).
