PHOENIX magazine editor-in-chief Craig Outhier and Events/Marketing manager Johann Warnholtz join podcast host Matthew Johnson on this episode to debate, react and give thoughts on the winners from the recent Arizona Craft Beer Awards.
Make sure to get your tickets to Saturday’s ACBAFestival at azcraftbeer.com and come celebrate the best in Arizona beer with us!
The 2nd annual Arizona Craft Beer Awards named Pedal Haus Brewery the 2023 Brewery of the Year during a private ceremony in Tempe on October 6, 2023. The ACBA handed out gold/silver/bronze medals in 19 beer categories and a Best in Show medal awarded to Dragoon Pils from Dragoon Brewing Company.
53 breweries submitted 194 beers to this year’s competition. 65 judges gathered on Saturday, September 16 to sample, submit notes and feedback, and decide this year’s winners. All submissions were placed into one of 19 categories, randomly numbered and blindly tasted by judging panels that included professional brewers, home brewers, cicerones and industry insiders. Beers were judged according to GABF guidelines.
On behalf of the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild, PHOENIX magazine would like to give special thanks to several people behind the scenes who helped make this year’s awards and judging process bigger and better. John Rudolph of the Arizona Society of Homebrewers managed the judging; Melissa Osborne from Four Peaks Brewing managed the back of house operations (organizing submissions and categories). Thanks to our sponsor Shamrock Foods for giving us space to judge and to Chef David Miles for offering us his test kitchen.
Pedal Haus Brewery
Pedal Haus had 18 total points. 3 gold medals for Pilsner, Beach Cruiser and Desert Classic.
GABF scoring method: 6 points for gold, 5 for silver, 4 for bronze.
Runners up:
Ayla Kapahi, Borderlands Brewing
Kapahi was honored by the Arizona Craft Brewer’s Guild in part for her work on the Las Hermanas project, a collaboration of female brewers from the U.S. and Mexico. This year’s beer collab was a Vienna Lager that was brewed in July — on both sides of the border– and hit the taproom at Borderlands last month. The proceeds of sales from the beer benefits a scholarship program for female brewers. During her acceptance speech on Friday night, Kapahi encouraged her fellow female brewers in the room to join her on her next trip saying “we need to step up and we need to keep pursuing these kinds of projects because Arizona craft beer is fantastic!”
Dragoon Pils, Dragoon Brewing Company
The Best in Show beer was determined by a panel of six judges for best overall drinkability of the 19 category gold medal winners.

We lined up guests from three Arizona breweries who won medals at the 2023 Great American Beer Festival last weekend in Denver.

2nd: Josh “Archie” Archuleta, head brewer and operations director at Flying Basset Brewing, talks about the final hurrah for Flying Basset and what his future in the beer business looks like.
3rd: Rebecca Caroli and Adam Marshall from Basin + Range Brewing join us via Zoom from the Utah/Colorado border, as they drive back their prize and discuss a meteoric rise for two archeologists wandering the desert in search of great beer ingredients. Follow them on Instagram at @wildwesternbeer for updates on where to find their beer.
No video on this episode, as two of the three interviews were over the phone, but we will have clips of the Basin + Range portion on our social media pages.

Not since a brewery taproom opened two blocks from my house have I been more excited for a new spot to open than this!
Today on the podcast, we get a sneak peak at Catalyst Crafted Ales in Tempe. It’s the same people who were at Ad Astra in Prescott. They closed Ad Astra in the summer and moved down here to the Valley to focus on Catalyst Crafted Ales and based on the conversation we had with co-owner and head brewer Will Walthereson, it’s one of the more highly anticipated places to open here in the Valley in quite some time. Not only are they bringing their award-winning barrel-aged program, but also a game-changing approach to seltzers… plus they’ll have a taco shop on site from SALT sea and land tacos that started as a food truck and is now a brick-and-mortar location inside Catalyst Crafted Ales. Enrique, the head chef, joins us in the middle of this interview to tell us about his specialty: the Octopus taco!

On this week’s PHOENIX magazine podcast, we visit the New Penny Cafe in Avondale to chat with co-owner Laura Hansen — who also owns Saddle Mountain Brewing Co. and was named a member of our Great 48 class of 2022.
While the hospitality industry has always had a high turnover rate, restaurants have suffered the most during the “great resignation.” But the employees of Saddle Mountain Brewing Company – the Goodyear brewery that won a Great American Beer Festival award in 2020 – remain loyal to owner Laura Hansen, who made sure her team was fed during the pandemic. The former teacher says it was the classroom where she developed her management style. “I value other people and what they bring to the table,” she says. “But I’m aware the buck stops with me.”
