Deschutes River Action
I (Cindi) am concerned after attending a Northwest Steel header event that lower Deschutes River Deschutes River is under attack? How to be informed.
According to the Deschutes River Alliance, the Selective Water Withdrawal Tower on Lake Billy Chinook, despite its well-intended design, is harming the lower Deschutes River ecosystem by releasing warm, poor-quality water. This has led to high temperatures, excessive pH levels and widespread algae growth, damaging fish populations and habitats.
Research shows drawing more water from the reservoir's deeper, colder layers would improve downstream conditions and help migrating salmon and steelhead. The Oregon Governor and Legislature should mandate these operational changes to protect this vital ecosystem.
