Phoole and the Gang

‘Turning It Up For the Sunshine’ by The Tribe of Good has finally been released. On Ultra Music. TODAY. And Phoole’s voice is in it, so she’s exploding with anxiety to share it with Phooligans, who all turn up to love it and turn it UP! Show #243 starts with a set of tunes related in some way to the sun; the second half of the show is driven disco delights with encouraging eclectic excursions; the whole show is love. We are the Tribe of Good - and you don’t know what we got!

Life is short, and so is Phoole! Life is too short for genre restriction, so Phoole plays all the genres all the time, and so does Aardvark in his excellent second guest mix for the Gang! We stay in a disco groove for a while after the guest portion, then enjoy some big beat treats in celebration of the publication of Rory Hoy’s great THE LITTLE BIG BEAT BOOK, and then there’s Front 242 for Show 242 and some Phooleoween preview action and a Burt Bacharach moment for Oktoberfest - and because this debuted on the 21st night of September, we have to play Earth, Wind & Fire!

Atelophobia is the fear of being imperfect. I have it. As in I have a therapist helping me with it. And while no show is PERFECT, this one starts off really pretty horribly rough, and a lot of me wants to delete it entirely from the internet and let there be no archive of the trainwreck that happens about 23 minutes in or the fact that we abandoned our audience right at the top of the show when we couldn’t successfully broadcast at first launch and didn’t get a lot of it back. Finally Tiffany comes to the rescue, and she and Tony and Angelo the Cats make attractive appearances, and throughout there are good good tunes, and great and kind and loving Phooligans joined and stayed and were delightful, so I will suffer through my fear and - here you go.

UPDATED: Section where broadcast freaked out and looped the audio for an awkward minute surgically removed for a less-disturbing listening experience.

In which a Valuable Lesson is learned about trusting software that has a name that abbreviates to a four-letter word meaning ‘posterior.’ The lesson is: BEWARE. The tunes and bants are great - but the video is half stutter-cam due to a new app’s wreckage of the broadcast setup on Phoole’s MacBook Pro and it’s fun to enjoy listening to her channel her rage and disappointment into cheerful jibber-jabber! The audio is lovely, though. Dig it!

It’s Darth Baka’s birthday weekend! His answer to Birthday Question #2 involves eating gumbo that Phoole, in Baka’s imagination, has made, in the future, which is not likely, because all Phoole makes in a kitchen is a mess or reservations. Mitch Race rolls up with an expensive lexicon! Phoole holds forth on the subject of what DJs should do - spoiler: whatever they want, ‘coz ‘should’ isn’t even REAL. Tiffany and the cats Tony and Angelo all make adorable appearances. Basslines of disproportionate funkiness abound and we really flog that new Club Coral compilation! The word ‘guilty’ trending in world news gets a Mylo tune into the playlist after too long without. And it all ends with a pair of glorious Wiffs.

Only love matters, and the love just keeps on coming! First it’s the leading tune in the show, and then it’s the theme of the entire show, even when we veer into SPAAAAACE FOOOOORCE once again and Angelo the Cat loses his tiny mind. Phoole went into this show expecting total failure - her Chewb colleagues had tech woes aplenty in the run-up to the show, but somehow we had clear signal and functional chat and everyone got in, including several of the artists of tonight’s tunes, for whose talent and indulgence we’re immensely grateful always!

Phoole’s birthday isn’t until 29 July, but we’re having her birthday party EARLY and it’s LOUNGE-TASTIC. Bossa nova, exotica, tiki revival, Shibuya-Kei, mambo, cha cha, space-age pop and more are all on the menu, and a groovy time is guaranteed for all as Phoole gets back to her lounge-core roots! YEAH BABY!
