Tonight we tackle some key areas of discussion in the hope of providing some foundational basis in the Idea of AI Imaging and its contingent outcomes.

In the last 5 years, there has been a growing presence of photography in spaces usually associated with art-making, most noticeable would be in 2018 when ArtFairPH dedicated an entire floor for Photography. While the documented presence of the medium in Philippine galleries goes back as far as 1967 (5 Photographers at Gallery Indigo), much of the attempt to legitimize Photography as art have been cursory and short-lived.   

While several texts and experts could be cited to support the idea of “creative artistic expression” being gestured individually or nationally (check Guardiola, Massot, Silva, Javier) in the past, acceptance of Photography as a legitimate art in the Philippine context still is elusive. Tonight, we try to talk about the National Artist Award as a possible site of legitimization, but taking into consideration the political, ideological, and academic particularities embedded in the discourse.
