It was W. Eugene Smith who asked,
“What use is having a great depth of field if there is not an adequate depth of feeling?”
In a sense, Smith was right. Without emotion, a photograph is a stale thing. However, the depth of field is one of the photographer’s most important tools for creating emotion. By understanding how to adjust the aperture, I can isolate my subject or capture the entire scene with rich detail. The question becomes, “How do I use the aperture to achieve the greatest emotional effect?”
