This week, I define what a photography project is, and what it can do for the photographer. The project is, and can be, several things. It depends on what you want to say "photographically".

It seems it’s has happened to most all of us after we started photography, we were excited and quickly started taking pictures of almost everything under the sun. We each have our own “go-to" subjects like pets, the kids, and just about everything in the backyard. That was acceptable for a while as we were learning the knobs, buttons, menus, and other features of the camera, but many of us run out of steam for taking pictures. The new has worn off, and the camera sits hidden in a bag somewhere, unused. Starting a project may be the way to re-vitalize your photography, or give you that boost over the edge to think deeper about your work. This is the first of a four part series that will give some basics about photography projects.

As photographers, we don’t choose our motivations as much as they are already hard-wired into who we are, and we should not be apologetic about them. Realizing our motivators (active or passive) allows us to plot a particular course in our photographic path with more purpose.Knowing who you are photographically helps in your selection of subject matter, individual style, and your message that will come across to your viewers with more control, and consistency.
