  • Episode 73: Prioritizing Play over Posing with Erin Brant

Isn't it just the coolest thing ever when you see a peer of yours do amazing things with their business?? We are totally excited to have Erin Brant on the show this week because she is totally doing that and more!! She recently finished her Clickin Moms Breakout (The Happy Now) which was a huge success AND she just announced she'll be presenting at Click Away 2018!! She joined us this week to chat about FUN! She is a big believer in candid photography... as in, prioritizing play over posing and she's here to tell us exactly what that means and how she tends to run her shoots! Key Takeaways

    1. Establish expectations with your clients. Clients who are in the market for candid photography can be difficult because sometimes they don't quite know exactly what they want. They might THINK they want all candid shots but then once the shoot starts it's clear they'd like some posed shots too. Erin makes sure to outline her expectations of the shoot beforehand. She knows a few shots she wants to get, and once those are done she can let the family play around and hang out. It's always a great idea to grab some posed shots along with your candid photography, because that gives the client some variety and options.
    2. Develop a rapport with the kids. Candid photography sessions are the perfect opportunity to chat & laugh with the kids in the family! You can point out cool stuff for them to do (look for shells, build a sand castle, play tag, etc) that helps you grab those candid shots you need. The more you connect with the kids, the more relaxed everyone will be and the better chance you have of getting great candid photos. Don't be afraid to get some more calm, emotional moments as well. Consider asking kids questions about their family like "what do you love about your mom?" to help this along & help the kids connect with their parents. These shoots are especially great for shy kids, who can totally just cuddle up with their mom or dad and not have to worry about standing still and smiling at the camera for an hour. Ideally, you'll reach the point where the camera isn't the focus at all.
    3. "Don't miss the great while looking for the perfect." Ooh isn't that such a good quote from Erin?? I LOVE IT! We can get so caught up with making sure everything is absolutely perfect that we miss the moments. I know I've had times where I'm messing with settings or something & miss a great TRUE candid moment between family members. If you connect with your clients in a real way, you'll see moments you might otherwise miss. Don't be afraid to let yourself get really personal with the family. Focus on the experience... if the family had a really great time at the shoot, they'll reflect that feeling when viewing the images. They won't care as much about a hair out of place or a crooked shirt... they'll be thinking of the fun they had as a family that day & the moments that were captured.

If it isn't clear yet, Erin is an absolute rockstar when it comes to beautiful, candid photography & capturing deep, meaningful images of her clients! Be sure to download & listen to the full episode... it's a great one! And check out Erin online below! Relavent Links

  • Episode 72: Lifestyle Photography with Chrystal Cienfuegos
There have been a lot of trends in the photography world. Some are around for a short time and disappear (thank you selective color), and some stick around for good. We absolutely love the shift from stiff, posed portraits toward lifestyle photography, both in weddings & in family portraits! Chrystal Cienfuegos is an extremely talented birth & family photographer & she is amazing at capturing documentary style, candid photos. We invited her on PhotoSpark this week to chat with us about what lifestyle photography entails & how she achieves such great images! Key Takeaways:
    1. Why lifestyle photography? There are a million reasons why this style of photography is amazing both as a photographer and as a client! First of all, it's SUPER personal. You're really getting to know your client on a very intimate basis. You're likely in their home for at least a few hours & you're capturing very special family moments. This is a great way to bond with your clients & keep them for life! Also, for clients it's a LOT easier! They are able to just be in the moment with their family & not stress about everyone's outfits, hair, shoes, etc like they normally would for family photos. The result is priceless images of their family as they are today, which is such an awesome memory to have!
    2. How can you market lifestyle photography? Just like any other type of photography, Chrystal suggests portfolio-building. Her first lifestyle shoot was with her best friend, and Chrystal spent the night at their house & started shooting first thing in the morning! She was able to get a ton of authentic, photojournalistic images from that shoot which she used to market to potential clients. She blogged about her portfolio shoots, talked about how much fun they were, and showed off the images. After that, the clients started rolling in!
    3. What about the Christmas cards?? Something that's a concern when thinking of moving toward a more photojournalistic approach are Christmas cards! While some families are okay with this style of photos on their cards, others want posed, staring at the camera photos. Chrystal markets specially priced mini sessions at the end of the year for her lifestyle clients, which makes it easy to get both needs met. We also discussed doing lifestyle photography of the family preparing for their photoshoot, and then doing an actual, more traditional shoot afterward. There are tons of ways to incorporate both lifestyle photography and traditional photography into your business!
Chrystal is seriously such a rad guest, you guys have to listen to the rest of the episode for more tips & conversations about day in the life sessions & lifestyle photography! Thanks for listening! Relevant Links:

  • Episode 71: Work, Life, and Family Balance
Let's start with an easy statement: Finding balance as a business owner is HARD. Seriously, SERIOUSLY hard. Whether you're single & trying to find balance between work & time with friends, or you're married with a bunch of kids & trying to find balance among that, balance is a struggle for most business owners. I know as a new mom, I often find it tough to feel good at the end of the day. Either I spent too much time on work stuff & missed spending time with my kiddo, or I played around with my kiddo all day and neglected some work stuff. It's really hard to have a perfect day where you feel accomplished in all areas of your life. However, it's very important that we figure out ways to do this, and to help us with this, we have Cathy Olson on the show this week! Cathy went through a pretty life-changing experience as a new mom and business owner a few years back, and it helped put everything in perspective for her. She's nailed this work, life, family balance thing & in this episode she gives some tips to help you do the same! Key Takeaways
    1. Get your priorities straight. To start, pick three important things you have to accomplish today. Don't try to do everything at once. It's easy (especially as women!) to feel pressure to do it all. However, picking just three things will help you feel accomplished at the end of the day, which will help you feel good about your day! That way, if you get more done, you feel even BETTER, but if you don't it's not a big deal. Kate has a strategy where she picks one business thing, one family thing, and one personal thing each day that she has to accomplish. This helps her feel like no area of her life is being neglected.
    2. Streamline your processes. We know we have covered this before but this is KEY to work, life, family balance as a business owner! There are many ways to streamline. Firstly, you can hire someone to take on some of your tasks. Whether this is an in-person office assistant, a virtual assistant to help with emails, or a retouching company, letting go of small tasks can add up to tons of extra time to spend with family or friends. Secondly, you can also make the most of organization apps and studio management software like Ashley & Julie do (whattup ShootQ!). By being efficient in your workflow, you free up time to spend in other areas of your life!
    3. Unplugging works both ways! Not only is it important to unplug from work stuff when you're with your family or friends, but it's also crucial to unplug from family & friend stuff when you're working! Unplugging in either direction will help you be present and in the moment with whatever you're doing at the moment, therefore helping you make the most of the time you have! Cathy mentions when she's on a  business trip, she is pretty much unplugged from her family. Not only does this make her a more effective networker, it keeps her in the right mindset because she isn't worrying about problems going on at home. On the other hand, unplugging from work stuff when spending time with your family is equally as important. Your kids, husband, boyfriend, best friend, etc should have your undivided attention as much as possible when you're getting quality personal time in.
We hope you guys download this episode to hear more tips from Cathy about work, life, and family balance. This is such an important conversation to have, because so many of us feel like we are failing in these areas! The key to happiness as a business owner is figuring this stuff out, so let's do it together! Do you have some tips to share about balance? Share them on our Facebook page! Relevant Links:

  • Episode 70: Client Gifts with Gaspara Flora
Photo Cred: Turtle Julian Hi everyone! Here at PhotoSpark headquarters, we often discuss ways ourselves and our listeners can go above & beyond in customer service for our clients. We want to have guests on the show that can help us (and you!) learn ways to stand out from the competition. These days, with SO many photographers around, this is a very important part of being successful in business. Nothing helps you stand out better than a perfectly curated client gift! To help us with this topic, we invited the beautiful & charming Ryann Gaspara of Gaspara Flora to join us in studio!!! She chats with us about client gifts and the reasons why you should be giving them out! Key Takeaways:
    1. Echo your brand with your client gifts. This doesn't mean you have to have your branding all over your gift, but you definitely want to give them something that makes them think of you. So if your brand is soft & feminine, your gifts should echo that so your clients are reminded on their experience with you when they're using it.
    2. Give a gift that will last. Julie mentions she's gifted movie gift certificates before as date night type gifts for her clients, but she's worried by the fact that the minute that gift card is used, her clients won't really have anything to remember her by. Ryann suggested instead of giving a gift certificate for a movie, consider giving a warm snuggly blanket for a movie night date night at home! Include a card & let your clients know the blanket is for cuddling on the couch and watching a movie together. The blanket will last for a long time, and ideally your clients will think of you every time they use it!
    3. Outsourcing can be your friend! As your business grows, you typically start outsourcing more & more things to professionals. I know when I first started, I attempted my own website, logo, business cards, etc. Now that I'm an established business, I've invested money to hire professionals to create all those things for me, because they are far better than it than I ever will be! Client gifts are no different! You can start small by hiring someone to do hand-written thank you notes for you & you can work your way up to a company like Ryann's (Gaspara Flora) and have them handcraft the perfect gifts for your clients. You can even have them drop shipped straight to your client's front door without having to do much work at all.
Photo Cred: Rochelle Cheever This was such a fun episode to record... not only is Ryann adorable and easy to talk to, but she came armed with a bottle of Prosecco. You can't go wrong with that! • Episode 69: Checking in with Kate, Ashley & Julie!
Helllooooo everyone! So we have to be honest, we absolutely LOVE having guests on our podcast! Not only do we think guests bring their awesome expertise to the table, it's also kinda like having an awesome excuse to hang out with super cool people we look up to in the industry! However, we also love the dynamic the three of us have together, without guests! We have three super unique personalities, and every now & then it's fun to just hang out in the studio without anyone else! This week, we realized it's been awhile since we've "checked in" with you guys, so we're chatting about all things US and giving you an update on some cool stuff each of your PhotoSpark hosts have been doing! Kate: In classic Kate-style, she's choosing to use her 5 minutes in the spotlight to vent about someone (ok she probably does vent more than the other PhotoSpark hosts, but venting keeps things interesting...right?). She chats about a situation where a client seemed to be taking advantage of a special "friends only" discount she offered after said client ditched out on the shoot. It's hard to explain via the blog, so you'll have to listen to the episode in order to understand what I'm talking about. Ashley: If venting about clients is classic Kate-style, talking about Yelp is classic Ashley-style and she doesn't disappoint this week! :) While Kate & Ashley both use Yelp to find clients, Ashley is definitely the main Yelper of the PhotoSpark hosts. Ashley did a small business webinar for Yelp a couple weeks ago as a guest host, and she chatted about how to get more reviews. Ashley chatted about 5 star process from start to finish, and the webinar was amazing! She had 500 RSVPs and it was very well received! Julie: Aaaaand here comes Julie with her super awesome travel stories! She was lucky enough to travel to Mexico for Melissa McClure's wedding last month, and she's sharing about it. She's notorious for scheduling travel around work, so she'll schedule a TON of shoots every time she travels, but this time she only scheduled ONE and it was for a close friend. So she chats this week about separating yourself from work while you're on a trip, and how important it is sometimes to disconnect & just enjoy yourself! We hope you guys don't mind the millions of mess-ups and bloopers in this episode... haha we're not unorganized, we're endearing... and quirky... right?! Anyway, please keep listening each week & subscribe on iTunes!! If you haven't left us a review yet, you can do that too! THANK YOU!!! Relevent Links:

  • Episode 54: Lessons Learned in 2016
WOW! 2016 is almost over. We can't believe that we've been doing this podcast for almost a full year!! The three of us have definitely learned a ton of valuable things this year, both from the podcast & the amazing guest hosts we have, and from our individual businesses also! We figured this would be a great time to poll some of our listeners and ask them what they've learned in 2016. So tune in as we chat about some lessons learned this past year! Our Three Favorite Lessons Learned in 2016:
    1. Do not make exceptions for mini sessions. No more rescheduling! Kate has had a ton of experience with this in 2016 and she JUST had a client do this to her. This defeats the purpose of the mini sessions. Mini Sessions are supposed to be a win/win situation. It's a win for the client because they get great photos at a special rate, and it's a win for the photographe r because we get to make more money than we normally would per hour (if you're doing it right!) and we basically get to hang out in one spot all day, so they tend to be a bit easier. However, when people start canceling last minute or attempting to reschedule for a non-mini session day at the mini session rate, the convenience of these mini sessions completely goes away. STAY FIRM. Solidarity, people.
    2. Only accept payment from the contract-signing party. This is so important to make sure that the CLIENT is the one who is in control of the photos. This definitely applies more to weddings than family shoots, but is KEY to happy couples. You don't want the parents of your couple being in charge of shots, timelines, shot lists, etc. If the money comes from the parents, you're kind of responsible for keeping them happy. If it comes from the clients, they don't have as much say in the day of. It's totally okay if mom and dad are paying...  just make sure they write a check to the wedding couple, and then have the wedding couple pay you.
    3. Sometimes you just have to call it. Bad weather, wardrobe malfunctions, and cranky kids are all things that can lead to a shoot being less than perfect. While our job is to make magic happen even in difficult conditions, our ultimate goal is always to achieve beautiful images that the clients love. One of our lessons learned this year is to know when to call it. Sometimes there are just factors coming into play that we can't fix. In that case, we should just reschedule or re-do the shoot. In the end, we're spending more time than we maybe wanted to, but it's 100% worth it to get images we (and the client!) are happy with.

  • Episode 68: Tax Tips for Photographers
Photo Cred: Cassie Rosch So we've never had a flashback episode before, but as the three of us are sitting here doing taxes, we figured this might be a great time to relaunch our tax episode from last year! Melissa McClure joined us in-studio to chat about business taxes: the do's, the don'ts, and what it's like to get audited! We loved listening to this episode again and we hope you guys enjoy hearing about tax tips for photographers! We also want to send a BIG SHOUT OUT AND CONGRATULATIONS to Melissa on her very recent wedding!! She married her wonderful husband in Mexico last month... so in honor of that we're sharing a few of their gorgeous photos on this blog post (because tax-related photos are boring and wedding photos are fun!!). So go give her some love on her Facebook page! Photo Cred: Cassie Rosch Key Takeaways:
    • DO #1: Have a business checking account. One of our most important tax tips for photographers is to have separate accounts for your business and personal transactions. Melissa admits that she commingled the two for awhile (I'm not going to lie; I totally did too!) and it made things a bit of a mess when she got audited. She ended up having to claim income for deposits that weren't actually business related, which cost her money in the end, because she couldn't prove they were personal deposits (things like gifts for birthdays, payments from friends, etc). So definitely make sure you have two accounts and keep them separate!
    • DO #2: Have a reputable CPA you can trust! The guy who was doing Melissa's taxes at the time she was audited, kind of left her high & dry when it came down to it! He also wasn't giving her advice that was 100% accurate, which ended up meaning she owed money to the IRS that she didn't even know she owed. It's very important to know whoever is helping you with your taxes (and yes, you SHOULD definitely have someone helping you with your taxes, unless maybe you were an accountant in your former life) is trustworthy & knows their stuff!
    • DO #3: Keep a record of EVERYTHING. This is probably the number one tip in our tax tips episode, and it means keeping receipts, keeping contracts, keeping track of people who have worked for you under a 1099 form, gas logs, mileage logs, parking fees... EVERYTHING. And keep it organized as you go. Melissa learned the hard way that her auditor didn't really care to see a shoebox full of random receipts!
    • DON'T #1: Don't be afraid to talk to the IRS. Kate can attest to this as well as Melissa, because she had a situation a few years ago that caused her to set up an installment plan with the IRS. She was nervous to call & get scolded, but in the end, the tax guy on the other end of the line was super nice, super helpful, and set up an installment plan for her pretty easily!
    • DON'T #2: Don't wait too long to find a tax person! Melissa's tax person is pretty famous among San Diego photographers because she's excellent at photography-related tax issues. She books up pretty instantly each year, so make sure you don't procrastinate when looking for a CPA... chances are the good ones in your area will book up quickly too!
Photo Cred: Cassie Rosch We hope this episode on tax tips for photographer helps those of you who are still working on finishing up your taxes, and making plans to make next year's tax time smoother & easier! I know I'm implementing a lot of these tips already, and it made 2016's taxes a lot less intimidating! Let us know your favorite tax tips on our Facebook page. • Episode 67: Photographing Children with Chris Dowd
Julie is out of town this week (at Melissa McClure's wedding... lucky ducky!!) so Ashley & Kate decided to take the chance to talk about photographing children! We invited Chris Dowd of All Colors Photography to join in on our conversation. Tune in as we tackle subjects like working with tough kids, tricks to get kids to smile, and more! Below, we've outlined a few of our favorite tips for family and child photographers! Key Takeaways:
    1. Establish expectations beforehand. We all know we work better when we are comfortable and relaxed during a shoot. Same goes for our subjects! By establishing expectations prior to the shoot, you're making sure everyone remains calm. If you're photographing 2 year olds, you should probably inform the parents that you'll try for posed photos, but a lot of the photos will be candid shots of the kids having fun. That way, when the kids don't want to sit still & look at the camera, mom & dad already know that's totally normal & you plan on getting great shots anyway! Once you tense up, the family will tense up, and you have a lesser chance of getting relaxed, fun images!
    2. Have some tricks up your sleeve. When photographing children, it helps to get on their level! Not just physically, but emotionally as well! Not being afraid to be silly and goofy is a huge help! Figure out what makes each kid smile at your shoot and don't be afraid to do it over and over and over again. The three of us are fans of fart noises, funny jokes, high fives, and silly sounds!
    3. Limit parental involvement & discipline. This seems like a no-brainer but oftentimes parents get very nervous & upset when their kids aren't "performing" well for the camera. They've spent a lot of money on this shoot & it makes sense that they want it to be perfect, so when their kids aren't behaving they way they want them to, they can get upset. When photographing children, be sure to tell parents ahead of time NOT to discipline their children during their shoot. Especially physically. Spanking & yelling at their kids will not get them good photos. It's better for them to just stay relaxed & let you take the reigns. Sometimes, if kids are really not giving you any good shots, ask the parents to step away for a bit. This takes the pressure off the kids & gives you a chance to get those shots you need!
We had SO much fun with Chris in the studio this week! Julie will be back next week so stay tuned for some more awesomely fun PhotoSpark episodes! Relevent Links:

  • Episode 66: Wildlife Photography with Kathleen Reeder
This episode was so much fun to record... we could have recorded hours upon hours of content for you guys! Kathleen Reeder is a photographer, educator, and author specializing in wildlife photography! She chatted with Kate & Ashley about wildlife photography, and told some awesome animal stories! If you've ever fantasized about photographing big cats on a safari in Africa, or if you're just thinking of taking a trip to your local zoo, this is a great episode for you! Here are some of our favorite tips about achieving great images of wildlife from Kathleen! Our Favorite Wildlife Photography Tips
    1. Get technical. Wildlife photography is definitely going to give you a chance to test your skills using the manual mode on your camera. The entire trifecta of ISO, aperture, and shutter speed play a huge role in being successful and getting great shots. Starting with shutter speed, you'll typically want a pretty quick speed to allow for zooming without camera shake, as well as any movements the animal may make. Since this should typically be no less than 1/focal length of your lens, it will likely be pretty fast (as you're going to most likely be shooting with long lenses). You also might be shooting from far away or through a fence (like at a zoo), so shooting wide open with a low aperture is a great way to make a fence disappear. Lastly, you'll obviously want your ISO to be as low as possible but high enough to expose correctly with the high shutter speeds.
    2. Check your gear. As portrait/wedding photographers, a lot of us carry cute camera bags, which is great for most shoots, but not necessary good for wildlife photography. The lenses tend to be larger and heavier for this genre of photography, so you might want to consider using a backpack instead. A backpack will also allow you to keep all gear on-hand and easy to reach (with no risk of something trampling or eating your bag (I recently had a goat eat a huge chunk out of my shirt in a manner of about 3 seconds so I'm very sensitive to this right now!), and allows you to move around quickly as needed. Also, we don't always use tripods in portrait photography but they're super important in wildlife photography. I mean... have you seen the size of some of those lenses?! Speaking of lenses... you'll want some pretty big ones! Kathleen gave us some hints about ideal starting lenses for wildlife photography... for Nikon she likes the 80-400 lens, and for Canon she likes the 100-500. Both are decently light and good walk around lenses to use to photograph animals!
    3. Like always... it's all about lighting! Ok, maybe not ALL about lighting. But lighting is very important in wildlife photography! Kathleen prefers to photograph bears early in the morning, as the higher the sun gets in the sky, the harder it is to see the contrast between their fur and their eyes. This is the rule for most dark-furred animals! Also, cloudy days are GREAT for wildlife photography because you're basically shooting in a natural soft box. Lastly, Kathleen suggests bringing a flash along to pop the colors a bit, and make your subject stand out from the background!
Seriously, we aren't exaggerating when we say we could have chatted with Kathleen all day! She had some AWESOME stories to tell too (listen to hear her bear & hyena stories!), so this is definitely an episode worth downloading! Relevent Links

  • Episode 65: Networking Beyond the Photography World
Very people on earth are cooler than Tim King. There, we said it! Tim is just one of those people who exudes confidence, both personally and in business. He's a professional when he needs to be, and a goofball when he doesn't. And somehow he's found a way to combine both of those traits when in professional situations and it works great for him! He's very social, and very curious about just about everything, so he was a great person to chat with this week about networking beyond the photography world! We are so used to attended photographer events, that when we think about networking outside of our comfy, photographer-filled circles, it gets a little daunting. Why should we be networking beyond the photography world? What "non-photographers" should we seek out to network with? These are all questions we've faced at some point in our careers, and Tim has the answers! Check out a few of our favorite talking points below, and be sure to tune into the whole episode for more! Key Takeaways
    1. Networking beyond the photography world leads to better opportunities. Maybe I shouldn't say better opportunities... but different ones for sure! Not only do you get to hang out with someone who isn't in your area of expertise, but you (hopefully) become that person's favorite photographer, and (hopefully) they'll pass your information on to their friends. When you only network with photographers, they might pass you work here & there, but you're getting their sloppy seconds... jobs they don't want for themselves. Tim finds himself in many circles due to his "networking" (I find it funny that the people who have been on the podcast as networking experts tend to hate the word "networking," but we haven't quite figured out what else to call it yet. Any ideas?
    2. Check out local magazines. Photographing for local magazines might not pay much in itself, but it's an opportunity to learn "who's who" in a certain area central to your business. Not only will it be cool to see your work on the cover of a magazine, but this opportunity to photograph people in your community will hopefully lead to more opportunities down the line. Many people who are featured in (or just people who read!) these magazines will need headshots or family photos down the line, and if they've already worked with you and gotten to know you on a professional level, they're likely to decide to work with you again... and pay you this time!
    3. Interview interesting people. Tim has a project (the link is below!) where he interviews people with unique jobs. He seeks out people who love their work, do something cool or interesting, and contribute to the community in some way. He even interviewed a jiggalo in Las Vegas recently!! This sounds totally crazy, and I'm really excited to read the interview. Networking beyond the photography world allows him to meet ALL sorts of different types of people, who he might not normally get to hang out with. Ideally, he's now in the circle of all these people, and hopefully it will lead to photography jobs in the future!
