  • Peter Dornan AM Clinician | Educator | Pioneer | Author

Following a prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment, and after experiencing depression, incontinence and other side effects, sports physiotherapist Peter placed an ad in the newspaper, inviting fellow patients to meet. This is just one example of how Peter pioneered a new field of Physiotherapy.

Peter's commitment to helping men share experiences and seek support has helped create a culture change in the treatment management for men with prostate cancer. Receiving a grant to research incontinence – a common consequence in men after prostate cancer treatment – he developed a nationally and internationally recognised program for managing patients with pelvic pain.

Peter highlights the most important thing for him right at the end of our interview and leaves us with a song. Truly a unique gentleman.

You can also watch our interview on YouTube.

    Thanks for listening.

    Biography
Peter Dornan has for more than fifty-five years been a physiotherapist in the fields of sporting injuries and manipulative therapy, working with many international sporting teams, including being the inaugural physiotherapist for the Queensland rugby team, the Wallabies and the Kangaroos. In 1997, he became Founder and Convenor of the Brisbane Prostate Cancer Support Network for twenty years. In 2000 this interest in Men's Health won him the Cancer Council Queensland Travelling Fellowship to study aspects of cancer in the United States. In this regard, he successfully climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to collect material for his book Conquering Incontinence, released in 2003. Following this success, he tackled Mt Aconcagua in the Andes in 2009, and Mt Elbrus in 2013 the highest mountain in Europe. In 2009, he was awarded the Max Gardner Award for distinguished service to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. In 2011, he became a Director on the Board of Cancer Council Queensland.

  • Anna-Louise Bouvier Media Guru | Entrepreneur | Educator

Anna-Louise had 2 passions in addition to becoming a Physio. Following graduation, she realised bench warming wasn't for her (short-term patch-up), and neither were medium-term repairs, she wanted to make longer-term, habit-forming changes for her patients. So as a single mum, with 2 children under 2, she took a very bold step and created Physiocise. There was a method in her madness as Anna-Louise explains, but to place this decision in context, it was before the Physio + Pilates wave had arrived.

Anna-Louise has since taken many other bold steps, forging links, and partnerships and breaking new ground using her Physiotherapy skills and a warm smile to create products and services that didn't exist before.

Probably the closest we have to a Physio Celebrity, Anna-Louise explains how this occurred and how it ties in with her two other passions, teaching and journalism.

You can also watch this interview on YouTube.

    Thank you for listening.

    Biography
Anna-Louise Bouvier is a physiotherapist and Adjunct Fellow at Macquarie University. She is also one of Australia’s best-known well-being media commentators and is a regular on many ABC radio programs including Richard Glover in Sydney.Β

In 1995 she founded Physiocise, an innovative practice that has now taught over 100,000 classes focused on exercise prescription and education.Β

Her multi-award-winning joint venture with the ABC, Happy Body At Work saw her consulting many of Australia’s top 100 private and public sector organisations, including the ASX, Optus and CBA and many others.Β  She has published three best-selling books and a DVD series with ABC about creating happier bodies and was an expert on the ABC TV series Making Australia Happy and Making Couples Happy.

  • Martin Meyer Entrepreneur

Martin did all the conventional things; high school directly into Physio, worked a few years finding his clinical feet, did the hard yards warming sporting benches & completed his Masters in Sports, but then a 'we can do better' situation arose.

Martin is no longer a clinician, rather he runs a large business catering to rehabilitation and medically-based businesses (like you & me). This podcast episode explores how this happened and what he learned along the way.

You can watch this conversation on YouTube.

    Thanks for listening.

    Biography
Martin is a Sports Physiotherapist who graduated in 1996 from Curtin Uni and completed his Masters in Sports Physio in 2000. • Mick Hughes Clinician | Educator

You might say that Mick did it tough getting to his final dream of being a Sports Physiotherapist. With too many 'distractions' he didn't gain direct entry, and only just scraped into Exercise Physiology with a very late 'cash-only' offer. Then, after overseas travel, and on the back of his rural upbringing, he snapped up a place in a newly minted Physio program in Townsville @ James Cook University.

However, once his ball was rolling it hasn't stopped. With stints in Townsville covering rugby, Newcastle covering soccer and in Melbourne, netball, Mickha amassed a range of Sports Physiotherapy experience in a range of high-performance teams. He also developed a deliberated focus on ACL prevention and rehabilitation.

Learn how and why Mick deliberately built his social platforms as part of his business within a business plan, and where he would like to see Physio grow.

  • Diane Lee Clinician | Educator | Researcher

By age 16, as a result of her gymnastic pursuits, Diane had an unstable ankle, 'funky' elbow and pelvic floor incontinence and so begin her interface with rehabilitation. Welcome to Physio+10 and our guest Diane Lee.Β  Diane is a Canadian Physiotherapist, who is known worldwide through her landmark text, The Pelvic Girdle. This book and subsequent iterations parallel our profession's musculoskeletal development. Initially focused on the joint, then incorporating myofascial slings, motor control and most recently, our understanding of emotions, the text reflects our growing understanding of how to manage complex clinical presentations.

    Diane explains how;

    • The current focus on RCT, SR and evidence-focused practice is eliminating clinical creativity and sapping professional passion
    • It is important to focus on function, not pain and to test and retest clinical hypotheses, letting the patient's body indicate the validity of treatment
    • Critical it is to develop hands-on skills and why current evidence challenging this skill's importance is flawed - you need validity before you can test reliability
    • It is important for young Physios to be comfortable with discomfort and to surround themselves with their success.

You can watch this conversation on YouTube.

    Thanks for listening.

    Biography
Diane is a University of British Columbia graduate in the field of rehabilitation medicine.Β  She is a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Therapy (CAMT), a certified practitioner of intramuscular stimulation (Gunn IMS) and certified by the Canadian Physiotherapy Association as a clinical specialist in Women’s Health. Diane is also the owner, director, and practising physiotherapist at Diane Lee & Associates, a private multi-disciplinary physiotherapy clinic in South Surrey, BC, Canada. In addition, she is the principal instructor of Learn with Diane Lee (www.learnwithdianelee.com).

Diane has been a keynote speaker at many conferences, has contributed chapters to several books and self-published the book The Abdominal Wall & Diastasis Rectus Abdominis (2nd edn).Β  Her book, The Pelvic Girdle, was first published by Churchill Livingstone in 1989, is now in its 4th edition (2011) and has been translated into multiple languages. The Thorax – An Integrated Approach was released in 2018 by Handspring Publishing. She holds the North American patent for two sacroiliac belts, The Com-Pressor, and The Baby Belly Pelvic Support. • Randall Cooper Clinician | Entrepreneur | Educator

Physio+10 explores the journeys of trailblazing Physiotherapists and we kick off 2023 in conversation with Randall Cooper. Randall is known to many as a Specialist Sports Physiotherapist with a passion for ACL rehab, to others as the creator of PreMax and more recently as an educator and podcaster.

    In our conversation Randall shares four key business tips;

    1. Start small, test, and then scale
    2. You don't know what you don't know. Invest in people to gain skills that are complimentary to your own, not the same
    3. Clarify your short and long-term goals. Refine as you develop
    4. Have a service or product that is UNIQUE and NEEDED

Randall explains why he regrets attending a Level 2 Sports Physiotherapy course and what the life lesson was that he learnt from the experience.
Plus, his best investment for under $200 and his thoughts on how we can create a more stable profession with less practitioner churn and more appropriate remuneration. So many takeaways!

You can watch our conversation on YouTube.

    Thanks for listening!

    Biography
Randall is a Fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapists, Adjunct Senior Lecturer at La Trobe University Sport and Exercise Medicine Research Centre, co-Author of the world’s most read sports medicine text book Clinical Sports Medicine, and regularly delivers keynote presentations at sports medical conferences around the world.Randall’s key area of expertise is the role of skin in sport. After noticing that the creams and lotions he used on his elite athletes were hampering their performance, he decided to look into what he could do to change the game. He conducted research into the area, gathered insights from his athletes and made himself an expert in the science of skincare in sport. He founded Premax in 2006, a brand now used by elite athletes and sporting clubs around the world. Premax has truly cemented itself as being synonymous with elite athletic performance.
