Agony for the lost is indispensable to revival. But, this agony is almost non-existent in America. So how do Christians reclaim this lost agony for souls?

We begin by recognizing that conversion is not gradual. Conversion is instantaneous. When a sinner repents, surrenders all to Jesus, and receives Christ, the Holy Spirit then lives inside of that person. As long as he continues to abide in Jesus, he cannot sin (1 John 3:9).

This understanding will awaken those Christians who never truly were born again. And, it presses on the hearts of Christians the desperate need for the instantaneous conversion of others.

Then, as Christians break up their fallow ground, they begin to feel for the lost. They see the evil of sin in their own hearts–and turn away from it. This in turn opens their eyes to see the evil of all sin. Because they love God, they hate to see rebellion against him so prevalent in society. And, as they see the awful wrath of God against sinners, they feel deep compassion for them. As Jesus lives and reigns in their hearts, he fills their souls with love and agony for the salvation of the lost.

Do you feel an agony for the lost? If not, will you break up your fallow ground until you do?

Is Jesus increasing and are you decreasing in your life?

This vintage message encapsulates where the National Prayer Chapel, and the American church, are today. Though we have the promises of God, we are too big for God to answer us. Our own lives, interests, and opinions take the forefront. Then, instead of offering ourselves as a living sacrifice to God, we put Jesus on the back burner.

We’re no longer willing to walk this way. But, this means serious repentance and walking out that repentance with a changed life. This, practically, is revival. Revival isn’t a glamorous entertainment experience. It’s getting down and dirty with God about our sin.

As a result of this humiliating process, we don’t want to go back to the old selfish life anymore. We’re so disgusted by what we’ve done that we’re amazed that Jesus would even accept us–that he would even accept our offering of ourselves as a living sacrifice.

Personal revival is needed to foster complete repentance, a spirit of prayer, and an agony of soul for the salvation of the lost.

Revival in Washington, D.C. is needed to heat up cold-hearted Christians, save the lost, and turn back the flood of evil in our Congress and culture.

Revival in America is needed to stir up God’s people everywhere to personal holiness. We need revival to save the church from moral disgrace. When God sends the Holy Spirit, the church regains authority. She wins the lost by personal piety, soul-agonizing prayer, personal witness, and great outpourings of the Spirit of God.

Globally, revival is needed to set the entire church on fire for Jesus. Did you know that 40% of people on earth have never heard the name of Jesus? Christians have the money, Bibles, tracts, internet, radio, and television to evangelize the whole world in a matter of years. But, Christians overall are too cold-hearted. Instead of sending the gospel to the heathen, they spend 98% of their money on themselves. Only when Christians are revived worldwide will we reach those 40%!

What is prayer for revival? First, it’s confessing our sins, the sins of the church, and the sins of the nation. Then, it’s an agony of soul for the lost and prayer for the Holy Spirit.

When we see our sin, we see that we don’t deserve the Holy Spirit. But, Jesus promised to send Him. If God can find a prepared people, then he’s more than willing to send revival.

The American church is dying without the Holy Spirit, does that break your heart or are you asleep?

The American church is dying without the Holy Spirit. In Europe, old church members are dying off faster than new converts join. Only a small percentage of professing Christians attend church weekly. As a result, churches are sold and turned into mosques. Atheism rules. What’s happened in the European church is a preview to what will happen in America if the Holy Spirit does not come.

So let’s consider the first coming of the Holy Spirit. In the upper room, at Pentecost, 120 disciples of Jesus gathered to wait for the Holy Spirit. What evidence did they have for expecting the Holy Spirit? Nothing more than we do–Jesus’ promise. That was it.

If the Holy Spirit had not come to that first gathering of Christians, there would be no church today. Christianity would not exist.

Likewise, it’s time for us as Christians to get back to the fundamentals of our faith. It’s time to repent of our sins, give up hopelessness, and then see the glorious promise that Jesus made for us:

Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. (Acts 2:38-39)

Do you see that without the Holy Spirit, the American church will die? There will be no church. Is your heart all broken up about this? If not, it’s because there’s sin in your life. Wherever you are right now, will you quickly get to a place where you can honestly feel, and then cry out to God for the Holy Spirit–not giving up until he comes?

We've reduced salvation to repeating a prayer that someone else wrote and then we believe we're good to go. What???

What is the terminal disease of the modern, Western church? Simply, it’s believing, “I’m saved and on my way to heaven,” when in fact I’m not.

But where does this disease come from?

First, modern teachers have lowered the bar for salvation. According to the Bible, at conversion a sinner is born again and immediately becomes a new person who stops sinning. Then, he moves on to the infilling of the Holy Spirit and entire sanctification. But, the modern church teaches that conversion is forgiveness for sin–past, present, and future. The converted can’t lose their salvation, even though they live in wickedness. And there’s nothing more to the Christian life than that.

So what’s the remedy? Christians coming back to the basic elements of piety–personal holiness. Christians need to not only repent of all sin, but consecrate all to Jesus–even their best talents and resources. The natural outflow of this kind of conversion and consecration will be a soul-winning life of service.
