In this week’s Story By The Slice, Ashley serves up the history of the fork, and while this might sound like a boring dish, we promise that you’ll find plenty of unexpected and flavorful fun packed into this sweet little slice. While the idea of eating with your hands may seem like poor table manners to us today, it turns out it wasn’t as long ago as you might think that this was not only the norm, it was actually considered vain to do otherwise.

Lindsay closes out our culinary tour of France with urban legends and ghostly tales sure to please the palate. Our apéritif is the haunting parallels between the Phantom of the Opera and the real-life Palais Garnier, then the murderous tales of an Abbey in Normany — Mortemer Abbey. Our petit fours end the evening with the sad tale of Charlotte at Château de Brissac. Murder, murder and more murder? That’s so French.

In this week’s Story By The Slice, Lindsay shares the horrifying origins behind the nursery rhyme, “Three Blind Mice.” This farmer’s wife is a bit more royal than you may realize, and instead of being blind and tail-less, these mice found themselves in a bit of hot water. Buckle up: we’re gonna ruin your childhood.

A vicious creature with a taste for human flesh roamed the countryside of France for three years, between 1764 and 1767. Known as the Beast of Gévaudan, or La Bête du Gévaudan, this animal was described as appearing to be like everything from a wolf or dog to a hyena or lion. What began as attacks on chattel herders in a quiet corner of the nation quickly became a national sensation. Supposedly, the beast was possessed of supernatural powers and could decapitate its victims, then drink their blood. Hundreds of documented attacks occurred during this period, and neither soldiers nor the best hunters in the land could stop them. Theories abound of what or who could have been the culprit. Was it a werewolf? A serial killer? An exotic animal? Or something more familiar? We can only speculate, as its identity was never confirmed.
