Who Do You Work For Again? The Age Old HR Conundrum. Welp it depends on who you are talking to, the time of day, hour or if that person just got fired or got promoted.  HR is often described as a bridge between employees and management, but structurally, HR  is employed by the organization. Grumble , Grumble. The authority is usually top down from executive leadership too. We exist to recruit, retain, ensure compliance with labor laws and support the culture and performance. But as practitioners we feel that the industry should dictate HR's role and power dynamics.  Why? Because not every organization has the same rules, the same management-employee relationship or the same build. Listen to Council Women Melody Magee describe her many lives in HR spread over several organizations. We Are Embarking on a Three Part Egotistical Series this Season.  Starting out the gate with the Essential Ego Human Resource Professionals need in order to stand in organizations who will eat you alive if you are not grounded in who you are.  What is the HR definition of Essential Ego- the balanced, grounded part of a person's identity that enables healthy self-confidence, self awarness and effective interpersonal behavior without arrogance.  But dont get it twisted, its is not always pretty as we strive to manage pressure and setbacks with stability.

So why am I running in Stilettos this season? Well if you all know me in real life ,you know  I wear this beautiful footwear daily. Moving fast from place to place no matter what is going on personally or professionally. It’s my confidence however, walking in stilettos often requires composure even when your feet hurt or your ankle wobbles. Similarly, dealing with uncontrollable circumstances often demands calmness and clarity even when you’re stressed or unsure.

So why do employees feel HR will never be their advocate? Employees frequently carry stories -either personal or observed where complaints were not taken seriously, HR sided with management or a more senior employee or worse the employee suffered retalitation. It only takes one bad or public mishandled case and it erodes trust across an entire organization.
