To say the Yankees had an underwhelming couple days leading up to the MLB trade deadline would be a massive understatement. While so many contenders made big moves to improve their teams, the Yankees made two trades that brought a couple of decent hitters to the Bronx.

Sal Maiorana and Mike Lindsley came in hot on this episode because neither was impressed by what Brian Cashman did. Hey, maybe Luis Garcia Jr. and Heliot Ramos will help, but to not have addressed several glaring holes in the lineup seemed almost criminal.

The Yankees just can't hit, it's as simple as that, and even ever-optimistic manager Aaron Boone is reaching his boiling point watching the never-ending misery that is the Yankees offense.

Sal Maiorana and Mike Lindsley come in hot after watching the Yankees score in just three of 23 innings and go 4-for-31 with runners in scoring position across the last two extra-inning losses to the White Sox. This is about as bad as it gets, and if the Yankees don't acquire reinforcements at the trade deadline, it's hard to see them coming out of this offensive malaise that has lingered for nearly six weeks.

The Yankees started a tough 10-game road trip against three playoff contenders by taking two of three games against the Phillies. Unfortunately, they still lost a game in the standings to the Rays who are back on another roll.

Winning two of three was nice, but the Yankees' offense is still under-performing, and now it will be without another star player as Cody Bellinger suffered a hamstring injury and landed on the IL.

Max Fried made an earlier than expected return to the Yankees rotation and he delivered five quality innings Wednesday which helped the Yankees get a split of their doubleheader against the Pirates which also secured a series win.

Gerrit Cole was very good in the opener, but the Yankees' offense failed him in an extra-inning loss. The Yankees' collective incompetence at the plate has now reached five weeks and there's no end in sight, and it's only because of their pitching that they are still just 2.5 games behind the Rays.

It's hard to feel good about the Yankees, even though they gained ground in the AL East despite managing to win just one of three against the dynastic Dodgers. Their entire lineup - except Ben Rice - remains in a crippling slump as they scored just five runs in this series, and if not for a timely Jazz Chisholm home run Sunday night, they probably would have gotten swept at Yankee Stadium.

For those who didn't already know it, the Nationals have the worst bullpen in MLB and the Yankees exploited it by rallying from behind late in all three games to pull off a sweep in Washington. Although there was some continued awful offense in the first three games of their huge series against the Rays, the Yankees earned a split because Cam Schlittler was an ace in the opener, and the bats finally woke up with a 12-run outburst in the finale.

When you can't hit, can't pitch and can't field, it's going to be pretty tough to win games in Major League Baseball. So it should be no surprise to anyone that the Yankees, who do any of those three fundamental pillars of the sport, have lost nine of 10 games and 12 of their last 15.

The Twins came into the Bronx and won the final two games to take the series, and the Yankees were about as lifeless in those two games as you could possibly imagine. Things have gone completely in the tank and if the Yankees don't find a way to reverse course, they're going to be buried behind the first-place Rays, who they meet starting Monday for a critical four-game series in Tampa.
