MARSHALL — The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton volleyball team had a historic performance in the Southwest Challenge this past weekend. TRACY — Thanks to threatening weather, the Panther Invitational on Thursday, Sept. 4, turned into a McMeet. Tracy-Milroy-Balaton served as event host. Boys and girls were combined into three races: varsity covering 5,000 meters, a junior varsity race going 4,000 meters and a “C” division event (2,000 meters). Heavy rain began to fall at Tracy Golf Club just moments after conclusion of the varsity race, with runners, coaches and fans scurrying to their vehicles. The Pipestone Area Schools’ balanced offense and stingy defense were both on display in last Friday’s home opener. PAS nearly doubled Windom Area in total yardage en route to its first victory of the season as the Arrows downed the Eagles, 26-7, at the Paulsen Athletic Complex. On Parents Night, parents went home happy. NEW ULM — The Pipestone Area Schools’ football team played the role of movie producers during a 2024 game versus Minnesota Valley Lutheran. The film’s title was “Escape from New Ulm.” During the fourth quarter, the now-graduated Hayden Brooke booted a punt under heavy pressure from the Chargers’ punt block unit and Cayden Zephier batted away an MVL “Hail Mary” attempt on the game’s final play. The Pipestone Area Schools girls tennis team capped off a busy stretch with a road split Saturday, Sept. 6. The Arrows nipped Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, 4-3; however, lost to Morris Area-Hancock/West Central Area, 5-2. “It was huge for the girls,” PAS head coach James Skyberg said of the team earning two match wins last week. The Arrows also topped River Valley (Springfield), 5-2, on Tuesday, Sept. 2. Skyberg said the Arrows are beginning to play with more confidence, and that has resulted in more success. WABASSO — Both the Pipestone Area and Southwest Minnesota Christian volleyball teams play in the Wabasso Invitational set for Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Activity Center. Teams will play two sets, with a cap on 27 points. Points will be earned for each set won, and to the winner of each match. The maximum number awarded per match will be three points.
