MARSHALL — Southwest Minnesota Christian/Edgerton standout athlete Jonah Uilk will keep a certain directional component this coming fall. That’s because Uilk has signed with Southwest Minnesota State University, set to compete for the Mustangs in both track and field and cross country. “SMSU was in a list of colleges that I had heard of,” Uilk said in an email to the Pipestone County Star, “and was interested in since the beginning of the school year.” Uilk said SMSU head track and field and cross country coach Kirk Nauman was eager to get him on board. Jonah said the school’s familiarity...

BENSON — The Pipestone Area Schools’ boys tennis team wrapped up the regular season with a match against Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg. “Benson has a good team, up and down the line-up,” PAS head coach James Skyberg said. Skyberg reported the Arrows will only play in the singles draw at the upcoming Section 3A individual tournament scheduled for Redwood Valley High School. That means expect to see juniors Brady Dunn and Mathew Swenson and freshmen Joel Cardenas and Mikah Weets out on the court. Skyberg reported the Section 3A Team Tournament draw would be announced on Wednesday, May 13. The Arrows will most...

The Pipestone Athletics would have savored a win over the Milroy Irish in the Gopher League opener on Sunday, May 9 at City Field. That didn’t materialize, however, as the Irish scored at least one run in every single inning for a 14-5 victory. “Our goal is to compete to win,” Athletics manager Avery Ploeger said. “I thought we put out the best lineup for a chance to do that.” Still, Ploeger has to be thrilled many earned playing time, including five pitchers (starter Mitchel Carson, Pipestone Area high schooler Zayne Zollner, Dawson Schelhaas, Mark Abrahamson and himself). During the...

JACKSON — The Pipestone Area Schools’ softball team earned second place at the Jackson County Central Tournament on Saturday, May 9. During the event, Arrows’ Kaysa Douty and Amyra Mahik both homered and PAS showed on-field improvement after a period of struggles. PAS has won four of its past six games, and now stand at 9-10 on the season. “We played a lot better defensively,” PAS head coach Robert Petersen said. “We put the ball in play more, and we didn’t strike out as much. We took better swings.” Yes, Petersen said the Arrows showed selective aggressiveness — and that...

REDWOOD FALLS — For the second consecutive year, Pipestone Area Schools’ golfer Vivian Brockberg is an all-Big South Conference performer. Brockberg finished sixth overall in the season standings, moving up from ninth spot during the 2025 campaign. “All-conference, obviously, was a goal for her,” PAS head coach Grant Everson said. “She was rewarded.” On Monday, the conference slate had its climax with an 18-hole tournament at Dacotah Ridge, which measures 6,217 yards from the ladies tees. Everson reported Brockberg struggled with her driving; however, Vivian made up for that by scrambling well to keep her final tally as low as...

Punk and heavy metal bands have nothing on the Pipestone Area Schools’ baseball team. See, the Arrows endured a “mosh pit” schedule last week versus Big South Conference contenders Windom Area and Fairmont (which was a doubleheader) and a home date versus Murray County Central Thursday, May 7. The Rebels are unbeaten, rolling through their schedule like a hot knife buttering sweet summer corn. MCC could very well represent Section 3A at next month’s Minnesota State High School League state tournament. “Murray County, its a nice Class A team,” PAS head coach Rick Zollner noted. The Rebels have four dependable...
