  • CROSS COUNTRY NOTEBOOK: Three Arrows earn all-conference accolades

LUVERNE — Three Pipestone Area Schools cross country runners earned honorable mentions from their performances at the Big South Conference meet Tuesday, Oct. 14. Runners battled wet grounds and chilly and blustery conditions for the first time this season, with the temperature barely scraping 50 degrees. The conference meet features a unique format in which competitors from small and large schools run together. Later, times and places are extracted into divisions. “The important thing to remember at this conference meet is to run your race regardless of who’s in it,” PAS head coach Mark Moeller explained. “The big schools in...

  • HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Arrows, have yourself a Happy homecoming

There were plenty of things to like about the Pipestone Area Schools’ football team’s performance on Friday, Oct. 10. The Arrow offense bounced back from a 14-point performance versus Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial to generate 413 yards en route to a 41-0 victory at Paulsen Field. “We were able to let loose on offense,” PAS head coach Scott Boomgaarden explained. “We opened up, and (Austin) Musch made big plays with his feet and seeing the open guy, which was good to see.” The Arrows improved to 4-3 ahead of Wednesday’s regular-season finale at Le Seuer-Henderson. Sibley East remains winless on the...

  • HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: One last home hurrah tonight

Short memories sure would serve the Pipestone Area Schools football team well Tuesday night. The No. 4 Arrows (4-4) are coming off a 61-point shellacking from Mid-South District, Brown subdistrict foe Le Sueur-Henderson. But, tonight’s Section 3AA first-round game versus fifth-seeded Windom Area marks an opportunity for PAS to start fresh. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Paulsen Field. “Every team is 0-0,” PAS head coach Scott Boomgaarden noted. “We will see how Windom has improved over the year. We’ll need to be prepared and mentally focused.” Other 3AA first-round games in this seven-team section pit Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial...

  • HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL: Westbrook/Walnut Grove match prepares PAS for playoffs

For a brief spell during the second set, the Pipestone Area Schools’ volleyball team had the lead. That was much to the delight of first-year head coach Shelly Hennager. “We passed well, and that allowed us to run our big offense,” Hennager commented. “Taryn (Tuinstra) had three of the best swings she’s hit.” Tuinstra found seams between Westbrook/Walnut Grove’s blocking scheme, and the Arrows were ahead 13-11. Moreover, Emersyn Smidt served effectively to help PAS pull in front. There is video of this portion of the match on the Pipestone County Star’s Facebook page. WWG head coach Meghann Westover then...
