Tonight could be the last night the Smithfield Shelter will be available to the homeless in Downtown Pittsburgh. On the Big K Morning Show, Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald confirmed the low-barrier shelter will close for good in the next day or so. He says the shelter was nothing more than a basement gymnasium with cots on the floor and a bathroom.

It is a Code Orange Air Quality Action Day. The Department of Environmental Protection says with temperatures in the 80s and lingering smoke from Canadian wildfires, ozone pollution will be higher than usual.

We are waiting for word of a verdict in the Tree of Life synagogue shooting trial. Jury deliberations began Thursday afternoon. After the verdict, comes the sentencing phase of the trial. Robert Bowers could get the death penalty or life in prison for killing 11 people at the Pittsburgh synagogue, where 3 congregations were gathered for services on the day of the shooting. Stephen Cohen is president of New Light congregation, which lost 3 of its members. He says the last couple weeks of testimony has been heartwrenching at times. But there has also been a great showing of love and support. He says while a verdict may bring the case closer to justice... foregiveness may never come. Survivors and victims' families will be able to speak directly to Bowers in the next phase of the trial. 

Closing arguments begin today in the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting trial. The prosecution rested its case Wednesday after 11 days of testimony. The defense chose not to present a case. When closing arguments conclude, the jury will either convict or acquit Robert Bowers on numerous charges. If he's found guilty, the second phase of the trial begins and the jury will decide if he is sentenced to life in prison or the death penalty.

County Executive Rich Fitzgerald has vetoed legislation to raise the minimum wage of county workers to $20 an hour. Fitzgerald says the measure passed by County Council violates the Home Rule Charter and is an attempt to usurp the authority of the executive branch. The bill passed 10-4, enough to override the veto. Fitzgerald says the Budget and Finance Department estimates the cost of the minimum wage boost would be $30 million, leading to a significant property tax increase.

Legendary sportscaster Stan Savran died Monday at the age of 76. He was born in Cleveland, arriving in Pittsburgh in 1976. Savran worked with the Steelers, hosted pre and post-game shows for the Penguins and Pirates and also SportsBeat, the popular TV talk show that aired for nearly 18 years. Tributes to Stan include words like: opinionated, kind-hearted, blatantly honest, legend, icon and friend. Despite numerous health problems in recent years, Stan worked until he was diagnosed with lung cancer last winter. We loved the show Stan. 

The Fern Hollow Bridge is closing today to wrap up construction. THE NEWLY REBUILT FERN HOLLOW BRIDGE, WHICH REOPENED LAST DECEMBER, RECONNECTING FORBES AVE BETWEEN SOUTH BRADDOCK AND SOUTH DALLAS AVENUES, WILL CLOSE AGAIN TODAY FOR A MONTH AS PENNDOT CONTRACTORS PUT THE FINISHING TOUCHES ON THE SPAN, AND THE CITY INSTALLS TRAFFIC PATTERNS AND SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS.  A DETOUR WILL BE POSTED.  WHEN IT REOPENS JULY 7TH, THE BRIDGE WILL BE A FULL 4 LANES.
