Being "posted" is a practice that is found in various African communities in the diaspora, whereby migrant parents decide to send their child back to the continent to be raised by a caretaker (usually a family member). Pina and Winnie are both "posted children", having left Italy for Ghana as a young age and having to grown up away from their parents. In this episode they discuss their experience and how it has shaped their identity, including the emotional trauma, how it shows up in romantic relationships and the difficulties in having to build a daughter/parent bond. They also reflect on the separation from their caretakers back in Ghana and the ambiguous relationship they have with them. How is parenthood defined? Who gets to be called "mum" or "dad"? Can you still be a parent from abroad? How long is it too long to "post a child"?
Hello guys! On this Valentine's weekend we want to revisit the topic of marriage and the pressure from our communities. This time around we want to hear it from the guy's point of view! We sit down with Tefo AKA DJ Remy from Botswana. Tefo has lived in Sweden most of his adult life and is used to the dating life in Scandinavia. But now as a returnee he's having to deal with a different dating field and a different mentality when it comes to gender role...and on top of that he feels that the club environment is not where he can really find wifey.
Just like us Tefo grew up with a mix of cultural identities and he feels that he's potential life partner should be able to navigate both European and African ways of life. Listen to find out what exactly he needs from a life partner and how he's personally dealing with the pressure to get married.
In the second part of our series on "migration and identity" Pina tells the story of how as a baby she was sent to live with her grandmother in Ghana and the challenges of reconnecting with her parents when she moved back to Italy years later...
But what happens when she moves to London? All of a sudden she has access to all the freedoms that a strict Ghanaian household doesn't allow... then there is Sweden...another move
Who we are as people is constantly being reshaped by our environments, but can you ever connect to your core identity and discover who you are and what you really want from life? Come on this journey with us
