What Impresses God

Scripture:

Luke 18:9-14; Proverbs 16:18; 1 Peter 5:5–6; Revelation 20:12-15; Titus 3:3-7

Notes:

Three Key Terms

Pharisees - "the separated ones". The Pharisees were decent, deeply religious people.

Publicans were tax collectors. Publicans were rich, politically connected, and despised by most of their neighbors.

"Justified Before God." It meant not guilty or innocent.

Note the differences.

1. The positions of their prayers were different. 

The Pharisee stood up and prayed. 

The publican remained in the shadows.

2. The manner of their prayers was different.

The Pharisee - boldness and self-confidence. 

The publican - brokenness and shame. 

3. The content of their prayers was different. 

The Pharisee voiced gratitude--sort of. 

The publican asked for mercy. 

Three Big Obstacles

1. Self-importance - a distorted picture of ourselves.

2. Self-congratulations - a perverted picture of those around us.

3. Self-righteousness - an undeveloped picture of God.

Two Attitudes That Keep People From Finding God

1. "I don't need God because of all the good things I have done."

2. "I can't find God because of the bad things I have done."

Where Are The Nine?

Scripture:

Luke 17:11-19

Notes:

A Hideous Disease (verses 11-13)

So much did the ancients fear it that anyone suspected of having the disease was banished from society.

A Profound Miracle (verse 14)

As They Went

Jesus said something that sounds surprising to us.

Maybe He didn’t intend to heal them at all.

Trusting God does not equal doing nothing.

It was the act of going that was the act of faith.

God who loves you so much, He'll give you the opportunity to be thankful when nothing about your circumstances gives you that motivation.

A Shocking Revelation (verses 15-16)

Think of it. A Samaritan!

1. verse 15. healed. This Greek word is "hi-a-tha," a purely medical term. It means to mend, to repair. It's like a broken bone finally mending.

2. verse 17. cleansed "kath-a-ri-dzo," the root word for our "catheter." It, too, is a medical word in part, for it means, "remove the impurities."

3. verse 19. well. It's not a medical word, necessarily. This is the word, "so-dzo," which means, "saved."

A Penetrating Question (verses 17-19)

Jesus asks three questions.

Were there not ten healed? Yes.

Where are the other nine? Gone.

Is there no one here but this foreigner? No one.

Ingratitude is the leprosy of the soul.

Luke 17:17-44

Notes:

1. Martha’s Faith Is Challenged. John 11:17-27

Two groups of believers are mentioned here. 

1. verse 25. Those who have already died.

2. verse 26. Us

Martha’s response has three parts.

1. One must believe that Jesus is the Christ/Messiah.

2. One must believe that Jesus is the Son of God.

3. Jesus has come into the world.

2. Mary's Grief Is Shared. Verses 28-37

Can there be anything more beautifully descriptive of the nature of God than this? He sympathizes with them. Praise God He sympathizes with us! God is not oblivious to our suffering. He does know how we feel and what heartache is! 

3. Lazarus' Life Is Restored. Verses 38-44

There are still two obstacles remaining before Jesus can raise Lazarus:

1. The Stone

Four Questions

Scripture:

Luke 17:1-10

Notes:

We are never as strong as we think we are. 

Satan is much more resourceful than we think he is. 

Our only hope is to hold fast to Christ. 

Am I Leading Someone Astray? Verses 1-2

Through false teaching.

By living in a way that leads others astray.

When we justify sin.

We can lead people astray by our silence.

Am I Learning to Forgive? Verses 3-4

because the Bible commands it.

because we need it.

because discipleship requires it.

Am I Living at All by Faith? Verse 6.

Am I Serving the Lord Out of Love or To Get Something? Verses 7-10

We must not serve God for the blessing we hope to receive.

The key is to be a servant, not a slacker.

A servant should not expect to be thanked.

Five Minutes After Death

Scripture:

Luke 16:19-31

Notes:

Now the only thing these two men had in common was the fact that God made both of them.

Prov. 22:2

I. They Were Divided By Decision

God does not put a premium on poverty nor does He put a penalty on plenty. It is no vice to be rich and it is no virtue to be poor.

God does not want anything you have - God wants everything you are.

II. They Were Divided By Death

The beggar died and was ''carried'' but when the rich man died he was ''buried''.

III. They Were Divided By Destiny

1. A Place of Unbearable Pain

2. A Place of Unsatisfied Passion

You will be consumed by the desire to escape the torment.

3. A Place of Unanswered Prayer

In Heaven prayer is not needed, in Hell prayer is not heeded.

Salvation will never be found in a miracle, it will be found in a message, the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

4. A Place of Unending Pity.

A highway from Earth to Heaven. It's the way of the Cross that leads home.

There is a highway from Earth to Hell. Jesus called it the broad way.

But there is no highway which runs from Hell to Heaven. “It’s appointed unto man once to die, and after this the judgment.” (Hebrews 9:27)

The Dishonest But Clever Steward

Scripture:

Luke 16:1-13

I. A Corrupt Steward 

A. A Sacred Responsibility 

We are stewards of everything and owners of nothing.

B. A Solemn Accountability

One day you, too, will undergo a spiritual audit of your life.

II. A Clever Strategy 

He made these debtors happy, and forced the manager to be honest. 

III. A Confirming Statement 

The master did not commend the steward so much for what he did, but for why he did it.

"He is no fool who gives that which he cannot keep, in order to gain that which he cannot lose."

IV. A Clear Statement 

A. The Ministry Of Money 

B. The Majesty Of Money 

You see, money in and of itself is a little thing. But the way you secure it and the way you save it and the way you spend it reveals big things about you.

Remember three things about money.

1. Money is a teacher. 

2. Money is a thermometer. 

3. Money is also a tempter.

C. The Mastery Of Money 

This is not a matter of advisability. Jesus did not say you should not serve two masters. 

It is not even a matter of accountability. Jesus did not say you must not serve two masters. 

This is a matter of impossibility. You cannot serve two masters
