A Time For Tears

Scripture:

He wept at the grave of Lazarus - tears of sympathy He wept in the Garden of Gethsemane - tears of agony He wept on the Mount of Olives - tears of urgency

I want to suggest to you three things that caused Him to weep.

1. Jesus wept because of their superficial religion.

Matthew 7:22.

A. False Praying 

B. False Preaching 

C. False Power 

D. False Performance

2. Jesus wept because of their passing opportunity

The fact of death is certain. 

The time of death is uncertain.

3. Jesus wept because of their smoldering judgment.

Do the things that break the heart of Jesus break yours today?

Notes:

The story of the Triumphal Entry is only the second event of the life of Jesus to be recorded in all four Gospels.

Matthew tells us that by riding a donkey into Jerusalem Jesus was fulfilling an ancient prophecy from Zechariah 9:9.

He will come as a gentle king.

He will come as a righteous king

The Triumphal Entry was an “acted parable”

These people believed that at long last the Messiah had come.

The time for silence was long past.

This was an official visit of the King of Israel, an inspection tour of the heart of the nation.

The whole city was stirred to the point of discussion … but not the point of action.

She doesn't care about criticism. 

She doesn’t care about custom.

All she can think about is her concern for Christ.

Five Wonderful Things

1. It was a Misunderstood Work

A. Jesus will defend you

B. It is their problem

You can't make yourself sick in order to make them well.

C. I doubt that Mary heard it

2. It was a Meager Work

3. It was a Mighty Work

4. It was a Meaningful Work.

She did what she could. 

She did all she could. 

And she did it when she could.

5. It was a Memorable Work.

Investing In The Kingdom

    1. Those who did what they were supposed to while he was gone - rewarded.

He came to seek and save the lost.

Verse 12. This is a story about Jesus

There are only three types of people in this scene, but there are only two types of servants. 

    1. The faithful. 

    2. The false. 

    3. The foes.

Verse 15 takes us to the Second Coming of Christ.

Becoming A Servant

Scripture:

Matthew 20:17-28

Notes:

High Ambition Matthew 20:20-21.

First, she clearly believes that Jesus will one day have a kingdom of His own.

Second, it’s clear that Jesus loved her sons.

Third, they were among the earliest disciples.

Fourth, they (along with Peter) were clearly in the top three of all the apostles.

They didn’t ask for work in the coming Kingdom (which would have been a nobler request). They asked only for a place of honor.

High Cost Matthew 20:22-23.

He was inviting them to come and die with Him.

High Standard  Matthew 20:24-28.

Christianity in One Verse

Jesus came to serve us so that we can serve others.

Jesus came to serve us while we serve others.

First Shall Be Last and the Last First

Scripture:

Matthew 19:30-20:16

Notes:

We identify last week’s message mostly with the Rich Young Ruler, but we ended with Peter’s question.

He tells this story to remind us that what we have in Christ is not because we have earned it but because God is gracious.

Verses 8-16. There are two surprises here.

    1. The owner pays them as if they had worked a whole day!

    2. They too are paid only a single denarius.

Jesus' lesson can be summed up in two contrasting words: grace and disgrace.

The whole point of the parable is the generosity of the farmer.

I. The Young Man’s Desire

1. He was an Eager Young Man

2. He was a Humble Young Man

He had riches.

He had rank.

He had religion.

3. He was a Courageous Young Man

What matters is not what the world thinks, but what does God think?

4. He was a Spiritually Minded Young Man

II. The Young Man’s Decision

The Good News of Jesus is not about what we do, but what God did for us!

Jesus knew what was missing in the young man’s life—a living relationship with God

He also said, “Come, follow me.”

III. The Young Man’s Destiny

1. The Terrible Danger of Affluence

Conclusion:

First of all, the young man went away grieving. 

Secondly, Jesus let him go. 

Thirdly, Jesus didn’t lower the standards.
