Pharisees - "the separated ones". The Pharisees were decent, deeply religious people.
Publicans were tax collectors. Publicans were rich, politically connected, and despised by most of their neighbors.
"Justified Before God." It meant not guilty or innocent.
1. The positions of their prayers were different.
The Pharisee stood up and prayed.
The publican remained in the shadows.
2. The manner of their prayers was different.
The Pharisee - boldness and self-confidence.
The publican - brokenness and shame.
3. The content of their prayers was different.
The Pharisee voiced gratitude--sort of.
The publican asked for mercy.
1. Self-importance - a distorted picture of ourselves.
2. Self-congratulations - a perverted picture of those around us.
3. Self-righteousness - an undeveloped picture of God.
Two Attitudes That Keep People From Finding God
1. "I don't need God because of all the good things I have done."
2. "I can't find God because of the bad things I have done."
