A Tale of Two Sons

Scripture:

Matthew 21:28-32

Notes:

These were the teachers of Israel, the Pharisees.  Here they are in God’s own country, Israel. In God’s own city, Jerusalem, and they are near God’s own house, the Temple, and they’re celebrating at God’s major annual feast, the Passover.

1. The two sons and what they shared in common.

A. Both sons receive a gracious invitation.

To have a vineyard was a sign of wealth,

To have a vineyard was a sign of abundance, 

To have a vineyard was a sign of being well-to-do.

B. They both blew it.

2. Their two responses, and how different they were.

A. These aren’t just two options, I would suggest to you that these are THE two options.

a. They pretend. They fake it.

b. They admit it, and they repent.

The pretender is symbolic of the Pharisees.

A repenter is the sinner.

3. The two outcomes, where it led them.

A. These aren’t just two different responses to God, they are two different destinations.

Jesus isn’t affirming the behavior of prostitutes and tax collectors. Tax collectors and prostitutes get to heaven because they repent.

The two kinds of people in the world are the pretenders and the repenters.

B. It’s actually not the sons that are the main point of the parable. It’s how gracious and forgiving the father is to that repentant son.

The truth of the matter is God is more willing to forgive than we are often willing to repent.

Commit in some way this week to be intentional in setting time aside to influence your children’s spiritual growth.

Change your perspective in the role you play in your kid’s lives. See how giving them to God can change how you represent God’s message, methods, and character in the lives of your children.

“4 On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters. 5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb.”

“10 She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly. 11 And she vowed a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall touch his head.”

“24 And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and she brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. Message 3:  STEWARDSHIP IS A CHOICE “Choose Your Method”

Scripture:

1 Corinthians 16:1-2

Notes:

The Greek word for “collection” means say something

The Old Testament emphasized the tithe

The New Testament emphasized liberal giving

What is Liberal Giving?

1. It is more than the Old Testament standard of the tithe

Which is the Higher Standard?

Old Testament

New Testament

Thou shalt not kill.

Whoever hates his brother is a murderer.

Thou shalt not commit adultery.

Whoever lusts commits adultery in his heart.

Thou shalt not swear by my name falsely.

Swear not at all.

The tenth shall be holy unto the Lord.

Give as you are prospered.

(By no stretch of the imagination can any think that Christ has lowered the standard of giving, while raising everything else.)

2. Liberal giving must be according to the priorities of God’s Kingdom. Matt. 6:33

Too many adjust their standard of giving to their standard of living.

Seek Christ FIRST…

And you’ll adjust your standard of living to your standard of giving!

4. Liberal giving is consistent, deliberate and sacrificial I Cor. 16:1-2

5. Liberal giving should increase as you prosper. I Cor. 16: 2

6. Liberal giving will inspire others to give more. II Cor. 8:1-7

7. Liberal giving improves the lives of other people II Cor. 8:9-15

8. Liberal giving is done with the right attitude II Cor. 9:7

9. Liberal giving is evidenced by a return II Cor. 9:6, 8, 10-11

10. Liberal giving glorifies God II Cor. 9:12-15 

When we grasp what God gave us, how can we do less than give our all?

They  viewed giving as a privilege. 4

They first gave themselves to the Lord. 5

The Right Attitude:

Giving is a matter of Priorities,

not a matter of problems.  (Vs. 2)

Giving is a matter of Willingness,

not a matter of wealth.  (Vs. 2)

Giving is a matter of Opportunity,

not a matter of obligation.  (Vs. 4)

The Right Action:

They first gave themselves to the Lord.

They settled the issue of Lordship.

They gave themselves to Paul and the other leaders. They settled the issue of Leadership

They  gave according to their ability.

They settled the issue of Love.

God’s Blessings:

The grace of God was given to them. 1

The ability to give beyond their resources. 3

2. Know The Companionship of His Presence.

3. The Confidence of His Promise

Omnipotent – all powerful

Omniscient – all knowing 

Omnipresent – all present – being everywhere at the same time.

Praise To God For Christmas

Christmas - It is the reason why we should put our focus on Jesus, place our faith in Jesus, and proclaim our future with Jesus all year round.

1. Be Amazed That Jesus Identified With Us 

A. Jesus was in the form of God.

He is exactly, and equally and eternally God.

B. Though He was a king, He took the form of a slave.

Jesus was not a clone. 

He was not God in disguise. 

He was not just a replica of a human being. 

He was a real flesh and blood man just like you and me.

2. Be Appreciative That Jesus Was Crucified For Us 

Jesus didn't die out of obligation; He died out of obedience.

The cradle without the cross is incomplete. The cross without the cradle is ineffective.

3. Be Mindful That Jesus Is Magnified Over Us
