Sermon: The Chronological Life of Christ #143: The Final Week Final Exams #2: Sadducees and Heavenly Relations

Scripture: Mark 12:18-27

Notes:
1. The Religious Antagonists Verse 18 Sadducees were another priestly group of Jews who were more conservative in their theology than the Pharisees, yet more liberal in their politics. Sadducees say there is no resurrection. They didn't believe in the immortality of the soul. They didn't believe in life after death. They didn't believe in a final judgment before God. They didn't believe in a supernatural world. They completely rejected the existence of angels and demons, or heaven and hell. They only believed the first five books of the Old Testament written by Moses called the Pentateuch.
2. The Ridiculous Argument Verses 19-23. They attempt to trap the Son of God with the Word of God. 3. The Reliable Answer Verses 24-27 A. Jesus says: You are wrong about GOD Verse 24 B. Jesus says: You are wrong about MARRIAGE. Verse 25. Notice carefully that we DO NOT become angels when we die. How will we be like the angels? 1. Like angels, our entire existence will be defined by our worship of and service to God. 2. Like angels, there will be no possibility of death.
3. Like angels, we will not be married. C. Jesus says: You are wrong about the RESURRECTION. Verses 26-27 Not, “I was the God of your father,” But, “I am the God of your father.”

1. THE AWKWARD ALLIANCE.

The Pharisee's and the Herodians agreed about nothing and fought about everything.

1. The Herodians saw the Pharisee's as religious fanatics. The Pharisees saw the Herodians as secular pagans.

2. The Herodians were pro-Herod, therefore pro-taxes. The Pharisee's were anti-Herod, therefore anti-taxes.

2. THE INSINCERE APPROACH.

A. They first come at Jesus under the cloak of flattery.

3. THE BRILLIANT ANSWER.

A. They want Jesus to say something careless, but He says something flawless.

God-Given Responsibilities to the Government.

A. OBEY. Romans 13:1-5

B. PAY. Romans 13:6-7

C. PRAY. 1 Timothy 2:1-3

We can do more than pray after we have prayed, but we can do no more than pray until we have prayed.

Certain people might not deserve our praise. But they certainly need our prayers.

D. HONOR. 1 Peter 2:13-17

While not every ruler is anointed by God; every ruler is appointed by God.

The miracle worker. The blind eye, deaf ear, lame limb, Healer. The Teacher of truth, the Prince of power, laid still in a cold, dark tomb.
The disciples were fearful, the women were weeping, and the earth was sorrowful.
We have those periods of darkness, don’t we? We have those “dark nights of the soul,”
The thick and dreadful darkness of doubt.
God didn’t send Jesus to this earth because we needed a miracle worker.
We needed a Savior
One that could die and rise again...
One that was victorious over death, hell and the grave.
And that’s good news today, because it doesn’t matter what the devil has done, what the doctor has said, what the circumstances in life are saying to you.

2. Jesus is in complete control of everything that happens on Palm Sunday.
1. He will come as a gentle king riding on a donkey.

To him the gatekeeper opens.

The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name.

He goes before them.
The "Door" Of The Sheep.
A sheepfold only had one entry point.

Notice that anyone can enter.
He Is The Good Shepherd
Every other religion teaches us to earn our way to God.

Other religions have systems of rules to appease their god.

No other religion has an empty tomb.
He is the Great Shepherd.

1. The Bread That Never Grows Stale.

The reason that Communion bread never grows stale is that Christ never grows old.
His sermons sound as if they were preached yesterday.
His parables seem to have been drawn from modern life.
His conversations would fit a modern man.

2. Then There Is A Bread That Ever Satisfies.

A. He satisfies us intellectually
B. He satisfies us emotionally
C. He satisfies us spiritually

3. There Is A Bread That Gives Eternal Life

We do not simply eat this bread in His memory.
We do not simply eat this bread in His honor.
We eat this bread in His presence!
It is not the miracle bread
It is not the memorial bread
It is Christ himself.
