A Look Into the Heart Of Jesus

Scripture:

John 17:1-5

Notes:

A magnificent example of the need for prayer

1. Who controls all things

2. Who is the ruler over all things,

3. Who is sovereign over all things

4. Who knows all things

The gospels tell us that He prayed

1. At the grave of Lazarus,

2. At Gethsemane

3. At the cross

What hour?

Two eternities were about to meet: eternity past and eternity future, and they would meet at the cross.

1. When all prophecies of salvation were fulfilled, 2. When all promises of salvation were fulfilled, 

3. When all the specific prophecies of Messiah were fulfilled, 

4. When all the types and all the symbols were fulfilled. 

5. Triumph over the prince of this world. 

6. Dismissing the old and ushering in the new. 

A. To blot out the power of the curse, 

B. To reconcile sinners to God, 

C. To illuminate the obscured spiritual kingdom.

He means: 

1. The Cross; and, subsequently, 

2. The Resurrection; and, subsequently, 

3. The Ascension; and, subsequently, 

4. The Coronation.

A. The most tragic outcome possible

B. The most triumphant outcome possible

A. They thought was all shame, 

B. The Lord knew was all glory.

A. They saw tragedy

B. Jesus saw triumph

The Hope That Overcomes the World

Scripture:

John 16:23-33

Notes:

While He has been with them, they have had 

1. Someone to love them. 

2. Someone to believe in, 

3.Who has delivered them from every issue 

4. Provided everything they need. 

He has filled their lives with hope.

Why are they going to hate you? 

1. They hate Me. 

2. You’re not part of the world’s system 

3. They don’t know God

There are three things people need.

1. They need love

2. They need someone to trust

3. They need hope.

A. Peace is the absence of anxiety. 

B. Joy is the cheerfulness in spite of trouble.

These things – Everything He said to them.

Jesus spoke about being:

A. The light. 

B. Water. 

C. Bread. 

D. Temple as His body. 

E. Eating His flesh and 

F. Drinking His blood.

An hour is coming.– When the Holy Spirit is sent.

In that day. – After the crucifixion

1. Love – Why does all of this come to us?Because God loves us.

2. Faith – You believe the gospel

3. Hope – I have overcome the world.”

Turning Sorrow Into Joy

1. A Strange Prediction (verses 16-20)

They don’t know everything. And they fail to trust the One who knows all things. 

They don’t hold the future. And they fail to entrust theirs to the One who does.

I. He Comes to Continue the Work of Jesus

II. He Comes to Convict the World  John 16:8

2. Righteousness  Verse 10 

1. He changed what I am

2. He forgave what I did

3. It provides what you need.

Mercy is God not giving me what I deserve,

Grace is God giving me what I don't deserve.

III. He Comes To Lead Into Truth  John 16:13

1. Judgment Verse 13

Sin can't win and God can't fail

Love is stronger than hate.

Truth is stronger than error.

Righteousness is stronger than sin.

And the Gospel that changes lives is all about Jesus

and persecution.

The World Will Hate You

Jesus did nothing wrong, so why would anyone hate Him?

1. Jesus changed the status quo.

2. Jesus was a light shining in the darkness

3. Jesus was a threat

What does the Holy Spirit do for us?

1. Ability to serve faithfully, 

2. Make progress in holiness, 

3. Gives us wisdom and insight 

Whatever negative things come into our lives – they didn’t take God by surprise.

Failure Is Not Final

Scripture:

Matthew 26:31-35; Luke 22:31-34

Notes:

I. Satan’s Desire

Satan was determined to bring Peter down.

Satan can only do what God permits him to do.

Satan goes after spiritual leaders.

II. Christ’s Prayer

1. Christ knew in advance everything that Peter was about to do.

2. Christ’s response is to pray for Peter.

3. Christ prays that Peter would not lose his faith.

III. Peter’s Recovery

1. He never criticized him 

2. He never gave up on him.

His guilt was turned into grace; his shame into sympathy; his failure into faithfulness.
