Finished – The Greatest Word Ever Spoken

Scripture:

John 19:30

Notes:

“It is finished,” He meant “It was finished in the past, it is still finished in the present and it will remain finished in the future.”

    1) All of the Old Testament types and prophesies were fulfilled.

    2) The sufferings of Jesus were finished.

        A) His physical sufferings.

        B) His emotional sufferings.

        C) His spiritual sufferings

    3) “It is finished” could be interpreted as “Paid in full.”

    4) The tyranny of the devil.

I Thirst – The Most Human Word

Scripture:

John 19:28-30

Notes:

Was Jesus a failure? 

He was born into an unimportant family.

He was ignored.

He was laughed at. 

When He talks and when He speaks, the powers that be want nothing to do with Him. 

He faces nothing but ridicule and opposition and misunderstanding all of His life. 

And in the end, He is crucified like a criminal. 

Your loneliness does not necessarily mean you are outside the will of God. 

Your poverty does not necessarily mean you are outside the will of God. 

Your pain does not necessarily mean you are outside the will of God. 

Your sickness does not necessarily mean you are outside the will of God.

Why – The Most Mysterious Word

Scripture:

Matthew 27:45-47

Notes:

The absence of light, the absence of water, the absence of love, the absence of mercy, the absence of kindness.

    1. 2 Corinthians 5:21.

    2. Galatians 3:13.

    3. Isaiah 53:6

Calvary reveals to us two things we must never minimize:

    1. We must never minimize the horror of human sin.

    2. We must never minimize the awful cost of our salvation.

Without the awful pain of the cross, there would be no happy things to talk about. 

Without the cross there would be no forgiveness. 

Without the cross there would be no salvation. 

Without the cross we would be lost forever. 

Without the cross our sins would still be upon us.

Thank God it is true.

    • He was forsaken that you might never be forsaken.

    • He was abandoned that you might never be abandoned.

    • He was deserted that you might never be deserted.

    • He was forgotten that you might never be forgotten.

Mother – The Most Earthly Word

Scripture:

John 19:25-27

Exodus 39:22

Leviticus 21:10

Notes:

We looked at the word forgiveness that is certainly the most beautiful, spiritual word I know of. 

And then we looked at the most essential word, the word of salvation.

Today we come to the third word that Jesus spoke, and it concerns His mother.

Roman soldiers were there because of duty. Others were there, however, because of devotion.

There were events – prophesied events that happened before Jesus speaks this third word.

    1. The undergarment – tunic

    2. Fulfilled prophecy.

    3. A gift from mother.

Before Jesus turned to face the full wrath of God for our sins, before He turned away from this world to undergo the horrors of abandonment before God—the last thing He did was to make provision for His mother.

Why did He call her 'Woman' and not 'Mother'?

He says woman because Mary's role is going to change from this moment forward. 

And His care continues today in at least five ways.

    1. By restoring those who have drifted away.

    2. By giving us the opportunity to take His place.

    3. By launching a caring community called the church.

    4. By modeling how to honor our parents.

    5. By adopting people into His family today.

Salvation – The Most Essential Word

Scripture:

Luke 23:39-43

1 Timothy 1:15

Notes:

The greatest concept uttered from the cross – “salvation” – the Most Essential Word.

One man wanted escape, not forgiveness.

The other man wanted forgiveness, not escape.

    1. This man realized that he was a sinner.

    2. The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom

    3. He recognized that Jesus was sinless

    4. he recognized that He was the sovereign Christ.

Today you shall be with me in Paradise

In the morning, he’s in prison, at noon he’s hanging on a cross, by sundown he’s in paradise.

It is never too late to turn to Christ.

Even the very worst can be saved

The majesty of God in Christ is on display.

    1. In His amazing power.

    2. In His authority.

       He says you've got to understand this. You can't be expecting the kingdom. 

There's a cross first. 

Matthew 16:21 – There is a must.

        A) He must go to Jerusalem.

        B) He must suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes.

        C) He must be murdered. 

        D) He must be raised on the third day. 

    3. In His amazing sympathy.

Why are Christians refusing to teach their children the hard truths of Scripture, and why are they reluctant to learn them themselves? Why are Christians satisfied with a faith that only vaguely informs their decisions, that only mildly affects their thinking, that only produces warm feelings and never heart-crushing, soul-wrenching grief over their sin?

We must think about where the trajectory of our current faith life will lead us and our children. Are we giving ourselves over completely to the God who saves, saying with our every breath that He is all, that He is worthy of our life and our death and anything else in between? Are we beginning now to build a faith within our family that will truly be able to withstand harsh and terrible and cruel and unreasonable persecution, should it come knocking at our door? Are we teaching our children how to live for Christ and how it is an honor and a joy to suffer with Him, even to die for the glory of His name? If we should ever be called to sacrifice our lives for this Truth that we know, will our hearts and souls and minds be prepared, because of an all-consuming, life-long obsession with Jesus Christ, to die for His sake?
