Bio: Susan Clark

Known as the “Health IT Rock Star,” Susan Clark advises HIEs and state health agencies on strategy, funding, and policy. Susan’s 25-year career has spanned from the clinic front desk to managed care, policy, quality, IT, and health information management. This diverse background has formed the perfect stage for Susan to observe the entire healthcare ecosystem, enabling her to transcend traditional silos with an understanding of the dependencies and impacts on multiple stakeholders. Utilizing her expertise in EHR and HIE implementation, as well as quality payment programs, Susan’s most recent roles have involved connecting state stakeholders to achieve state programmatic goals, primarily within Medicaid and social services by optimizing federal funding for technology. Susan has served in multiple volunteer positions, including as president of the Indiana Health Information Management Association, HIMSS Indiana chapter secretary, on the AHIMA Nominating Committee, and as the chair of the AHIMA Advocacy & Policy Council.

Dr. Ryan Vega serves as the Chief Health Officer for Vantiq and is the former Chief Innovation Officer for the Veterans Health Administration where he led enterprise innovation efforts across the largest integrated health system in the United States. He work has spanned large-scale digital modernization efforts, design and deployment of innovative care and payment models, and early design and development of healthcare software focused on improving health care delivery and experience for patients and providers. Dr. Vega also currently sits as the Physician in Resident for the Digital Medicine Society and holds academic appointments as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Administration at Georgetown University as well as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at George Washington University. He is the recipient of many awards for his work in healthcare innovation and has published numerous articles on the topic.

Craig Lipset (he/him/his) leads at the forefront of innovation in clinical research and medicine development. He is an advisor to technology and biopharmaceutical companies, leading universities, and the venture community, bringing vision and driving action at the intersection of research, digital solutions, and patient engagement. Craig was the Head of Clinical Innovation and Venture Partner at Pfizer, on the founding Operations Committee for TransCelerate Biopharma, and on the founding management teams for two successful startup ventures (Perceptive Informatics and Adnexus Therapeutics). During that time, Craig designed and launched multiple industry firsts -- from the first fully remote/virtual clinical trial for a new medicine to the first returning of results and data to research participants.

Our discussion will be about Peter Pan syndrome and Welcome to the Uncles Movement.
Micah is a former professional surfer who was inspired to create a movement for all generations.
So what is this Uncle Movement about and what does it have to do with healthcare or health?
We all know the data is out that there is no health if there is no mental health and wellbeing.  Exercise, purpose, community, etc are all about sustaining powerful long term behavioral changes…and there is nothing more powerful than holding others accountable and being in it together, regardless of your age or ability.
The Uncles Movement is about keeping that momentum alive. Whether thats in sports, health/wellness, and family. We flip the script and look at age as only a number. The UM is a mindset to continue growth toward the best version of yourself. So although there can be a perception that you are supposed to slow down, we realize that we’ve only gotten wiser, smarter, and stronger. Through this mindset we are able to harness a more strategic,  richer , and fuller life with even greater attributes. The amazing thing is that everyone can do this, we just have to acknowledge our strengths through self awareness and truly believe in ourselves.
If you are looking to be inspired than look no further than hearing from Micah Nickens the founder of Uncles Movement.  The reason he started this movement was to encourage his group of friends (including himself) to never throw in the towel no matter what our age. We’ve all been through the ringer with injuries, illnesses, responsibilities, and day to day challenges. It becomes much easier to start listening to the excuses that float around in our head the older we get. The Uncles Movement is a mindset meant to combat those excuses and shut them the F up.
The reality is… We are in an exciting time in our lives. Technology is so far advanced, if we treat our bodies with respect, we’ll get to play hard well into the later part of our lives. This isn’t just about physical well-being, but even more so mental awareness. The UM mindset encourages us to address our challenges, face them, and correct them. Live life to fullest, love hard, forgive yourself and others, and laugh as much as humanly possible. This way of life is not easy to live by, but we’ll try our hardest to do so.
