  • Planned Solutions Investors Embrace Market Risk Wealth Effect And Pent Up Demand
In this episode of the Planned Solutions Incorporated Podcast, Margin debt, the amount of money investors borrowed to increase the risk of their investment portfolios, has fully recovered from its low in the first quarter of 2020. This is a sign that investors are once again embracing market risk and are borrowing to bid stock prices higher. While an increase in margin debt may be a good sign for stocks in the short-term, when margin debt gets too high it may be a sign that the increase in stock prices may not be sustainable.
Also, As we enter 2021 there are two economic forces that may support US economic growth. These are the wealth effect in which increased asset prices support increased household spending and pent up demand which may cause a spike in demand for goods and services that have been unavailable due to COVID-related economic restrictions.
And, Beneficiary elections on retirement accounts determine who will receive the account upon the owner’s death. These designations supersede and wills or trusts. In addition to selecting beneficiaries and the percentages, they will receive an account owner can elect per stirpes or per capita election. This election will determine how the account will be divided should a designated beneficiary predecease the account owner.
Plus a look at the Planned Solutions Incorporated Office Bulletin Board-We recently discovered that our tax program has scheduled a major software update for January 7th. This update will impact the formatting of the tax organizers and letters that we send out to our tax clients each year. Therefore, rather than sending the organizers shortly after the first of the year which was our goal, we will need to delay the mailing of the tax organizer packets. Our new goal is to have all the organizers sent out by the third week of January. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
All of us at Planned Solutions would like to wish you a happy New Year. New Year’s Day often brings with it a feeling of renewal and expanded possibilities for the future. We hope that 2021 fulfills this promise allowing us to put 2020 behind us as we look to the future and the many opportunities that the New Year, and an eventual post-COVID, new normal takes hold. Happy New Year!

  • Planned Solutions US Stimulus, COVID19 Statistics And Mortality, Rates Charitable Contributions
In this episode of the Planned Solutions Incorporated Podcast, Congress is currently debating the second round of stimulus. The currently proposed bill will extend unemployment benefits, although at a lower level, for many Americans as well as offer additional help to small businesses. There is also funding for state and local governments and vaccine distribution included in the bill. However, there are a number of factions within both parties that are threatening to hold up the bill if it does not include other provisions that they support.
Also, As scientists continue to learn more about the COVID19 virus they have developed a number of new online tools that help individuals assess their risk of contracting the virus, becoming hospitalized, or dying from the virus. Hopefully, these tools will allow individuals to make informed decisions to keep themselves safe during the holiday season.
And, In 2020 taxpayers who do not itemize their tax deductions may be able to benefit from small charitable contributions. Under the CARES Act taxpayers may deduct up to $300 of charitable donations made by cash or check from their 2020 taxable income even if they claim the standard deduction. This may be in addition to a State income tax deduction depending on the tax rules in the taxpayer’s state.
Plus a look at the Planned Solutions Incorporated Office Bulletin Board- Planned Solutions will soon be sending out our tax engagement letters and organizers in early January.
If you have any questions about the engagement letter or tax organizer, please call or e-mail us. If you did not get a tax packet and would like Planned Solutions to prepare your 2020 income taxes, please let us know and we will get a packet out to you before filing season starts on February 1st.

  • Planned Solutions Market Rebounds Holiday Shopping IRS 1444
In this episode of the Planned Solutions Incorporated Podcast, The US stock market has defied its historical patterns in 2020. Whereas the Summer months are typically characterized by low price volatility and relatively flat returns this year the market posted strong returns from June to August. Then, the market sold off in September and October which historically sets the tone for the remainder of the year. However, this year the market rallied in November, bucking the historical pattern, and taking the US stock market indexes to a new high.
Also,The annual event that is Black Friday has lost a large part of its significance in 2020. Shoppers largely avoided stores and instead opted to shop online with total sales down for the year. This has left economists wondering if the data has any predictive power in 2020 as the pattern of holiday shopping may be shifting with spending occurring over several weeks given reduced promotions and an emphasis on online sales.
And, The IRS issues IRS Notice 1444 to all taxpayers who received an Economic Impact Payment under the CARES Act. Taxpayers will need this notice to file their income tax returns in order to avoid accidentally claiming multiple tax credits. If IRS Notice 1444 cannot be located it will be important to find bank records that confirm the exact amount received.
Plus a look at the Planned Solutions Incorporated Office Bulletin Board- All of us at Planned Solutions want to wish you a happy holiday season and a wonderful New Year. With the holidays falling in the middle of the week this year Planned Solutions will be closed several days during the three weeks of the year. Planned Solutions will be closed:
Thursday and Friday, December 24th and 25th for the Christmas Holiday
Thursday, December 31st afternoon for New Years’ Eve
Friday, January 1st for New Years’ Day
Please note that any paperwork or forms that need to be processed before year-end should be submitted by December 16th at the latest. Otherwise, it may be challenging for Planned Solutions, as well as the service providers that we contract with, to process the forms before the end of the year.

  • Planned Solutions Vaccine News May Be Causing A Shift In Stock Market Leadership
In this episode of the Planned Solutions Incorporated Podcast, Positive news about the development of a Coronavirus vaccine has caused the stock market to rally to new highs in November. Within this trend, there are signs that the leadership of the market may be shifting. After months of US large growth companies outperforming international, small and mid-sized companies, value stocks have outperformed in November. This may be a sign that more economically sensitive companies are taking over market leadership.
Also, The Federal Reserve Recession Indicator now predicts just an 18% probability of the US economy being in recession within a year. This is the lowest level since November 2019 and much lower than the high of 45% in August 2020. This is yet another sign that the US economy is healing as many indicators are already returning to prerecession levels.
And, Due to the low inflation rate in 2020 the contribution limits for many employer-sponsored retirement plans, such as 401k/403b/457 will not change for 2021. This will keep the limits at $19,500 plus an additional $6,500 catch-up contribution limit for participants over age 50. The deferral limits for many self-employed plans as well as profit sharing and pension plans will increase slightly in 2021.
Plus a look at the Planned Solutions Incorporated Office Bulletin Board- Chase and Daryl recently presented a Finance 102 workshop to new Pharmacists entering the workforce. This was their second presentation that covered more in-depth topics including retirement plan types, savings strategies, and budgeting. The young professionals gained valuable insights on how to build a strong financial foundation to plan for their futures.

  • PLANNED SOLUTIONS INC Migration Of The Coronavirus
In this episode of the Planned Solutions Incorporated Podcast, The number of new coronavirus cases in the US appears to be showing a third wave of cases that exceeds the highs from the April and July peaks. However, on closer examination, there appears to be little signs of states experiencing a second wave much less a third wave. Instead, the national data shows that the US hot spots have migrated from region to region and state to state. States that have experienced high peaks are doing a good job controlling the virus while those that did not previously see high infection rates are struggling now.
Also, The US economy rebounded 33.1% at an annualized rate in the third quarter. However, US economic output is still 2.7% below the level reported for the fourth quarter of 2019. The strongest growth areas were consumer purchases of goods and private investment. Trade detracted from growth as well as government spending which decreased following a strong increase in the second quarter.
And, Social Security benefits will be increasing in 2021. However, the amount of the increase will be a fairly low 1.3% due to low inflation rates which determine the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) that is implemented. Meanwhile, the amount that high-income employees pay in Social Security taxes will also increase in 2021 as the Social Security wage base will increase 3.7% to $142,800.
Plus a look at the Planned Solutions Incorporated Office Bulletin Board- A number of clients have been asking when our office will be open again. While some of us have been going into the office sporadically our office is still closed for client meetings. Currently, Sacramento County is in the Red tier meaning the Coronavirus threat is still substantial. While this is an improvement from the widespread rating it still requires that some non-essential indoor business operations remain closed. Businesses such as Planned Solutions fall within this category. At this time we really have no idea of when Sacramento Country may move from the Substantial tier to the Moderate tier which may allow us to reopen depending on the exact criteria for reopening that the County requires.
While we understand that many clients would prefer to meet in our office, we will continue to take an abundance of caution. We are very concerned about the health of our clients and team members and feel that the cost/benefit analysis favors remaining closed until we can be confident that the risk is low enough to justify in-person meetings. Until then we will continue to operate via phone or Zoom.

  • PLANNED SOLUTIONS INC Bond Investing
In this episode of the Planned Solutions Incorporated Podcast, The interest rates paid on savings vehicles, such as bank accounts, as well as lower-risk investments, such as government bonds, are at historically low levels. This has caused some investors to rethink the value of holding bonds in a diversified investment portfolio. However, bonds may offer an attractive opportunity during times of high market volatility as it gives investors the ability to rebalance their portfolio when stock prices rise or fall substantially.
Also, Stimulus talks continue between the White House and the House of Representatives. Both sides have compromised on some issues, but no deal has been made. Meanwhile, the Senate is on a different page in terms of the amount of the next stimulus bill and the areas that will be funded. This makes it unlikely that a second stimulus bill will be passed before the election and may be delayed until the next Presidential term.
And, Retirement account owners often face a dilemma when naming their beneficiaries. Do they leave the money directly to individuals or name their trust which will then administer the money for the benefit for the beneficiaries? This decision can be more complex than many people think as the choice can determine the level of control that can be exerted over the assets as well as the potential taxation of those accounts. Therefore, it is important to understand the pros and cons of a beneficiary strategy.
Plus a look at the Planned Solutions Incorporated Office Bulletin Board- This is a particularly challenging time for young people who are leaving school and looking to find their way in the work force. The transition to full-time employment is always challenging. Add in the current recession, uncertainty about the future, and the changes taking place in the business world; such as remote working, social distancing, and limited internship or networking opportunities; and the challenge becomes that much more difficult.
At Planned Solutions we are sympathetic to the challenges that many young people are facing. For this reason, we have made an effort to offer some guidance and mentorship to those who are attempting to figure out how to move forward with their career goals while navigating the current economic conditions. This has included group presentations and one-on-one socially distanced discussions.

  • PSI Charitable Giving In 2020
In this episode of the Planned Solutions Incorporated Podcast, Given all of the challenges that 2020 has brought, charitable contributions are more important than ever. Fortunately, there are a number of ways that donors can give in a financially smart way that will both benefit their finances and help the charities that they want to support. This may also be a good year to make contributions as many organizations are offering matching funds which increases the total impact of the donor’s giving.
Also, Financial technology apps have become popular over the past several years. In many cases, these apps offer a more convenient way to conduct financial transactions. However, in some cases, users may find that they do not have the same consumer protections that are offered by traditional financial companies which could put their money and credit rating at risk.
And, The question of whether to take Social Security benefits early, at full retirement age, or delay to age 70 can be complex. The best strategy may differ depending on an individual’s other sources of income, life expectancy, and financial goals. Therefore, it is important to get educated in order to make a well-informed decision of when and how to claim Social Security benefits.
Plus a look at the Planned Solutions Incorporated Office Bulletin Board- The Harlan D. Wood Memorial Cancer Charity Golf Tournament was once again a big success. The tournament was quite different this year as there were no gatherings before the tournament and no banquet or silent auction afterward. Players were great about wearing face covering and maintaining social distancing while on the course.
The winners shot a very strong 58 (-14 to par) using the scramble format edging out Chase’s “Dream Team” by one stroke.
More importantly, this year we raised $4.725 for cancer charities this year bringing our cumulative total to 131.788. We would like to thank everyone who supported the event this year and in years past by attending the tournament, bidding on auction items, and contributing to cancer charities.
We look forward to next year when hopefully we will be able to return to our normal format. But if not, we will continue to do what we can to support cancer charities while maintaining a safe environment.

  • PSI Price To Earnings Ratio Homebuilder Confidence Soars Amended Taxes
In this episode of the Planned Solutions Incorporated Podcast, The Price to Earnings (PE) ratio is often used to determine whether stocks are attractively priced or too expensive. However, the PE ratio can become an inverse indicator during times of economic and market turbulence as short-term earnings reports may not be a reasonable estimate of a company’s long-term earnings expectations. Therefore, it is important to take a more holistic approach to valuing investments during times of uncertainty and volatility.
Also, Homebuilder confidence soared in August as low-interest rates, limited homes for sale, and increased demand have pushed home prices up. This could be a positive sign that home construction may help to support the economic recovery in the Fall. However, a limited supply of labor and raw materials, such as lumber, may limit the number of units that can be built in the coming months.
And, The IRS recently announced that they will now be accepting amended tax returns submitted via their e-file system. Historically the IRS required that amended tax returns be paper-filed which often led to long delays. The new e-file option may reduce the processing time for amended tax returns. However, it should be noted that the IRS will only accept amended returns for the 2019 tax year and newer while returns for the prior years will still need to be paper-filed.
Plus a look at the Planned Solutions Incorporated Office Bulletin Board- You may receive, or may soon receive, correspondence from Securities America in the mail. This paperwork is related to our old Broker/Dealer, Securities Service Network, whom we contracted with in the past but have since terminated that contract. As of May 31, 2018, we are no longer affiliated with a Broker-Dealer and are now a fully independent Registered Investment Advisory firm. For some reason, Securities Service Network failed to update its records and are sending notice of their upcoming merger with Securities America to people who have closed their accounts. Therefore, you can disregard the correspondence as it no longer applies to you and your investment accounts. Should you have any additional questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Chase, Shannon, Joel, and Daryl played in a golf tournament to benefit the Red Cross. While we did not come anywhere near winning, it was a great team-building exercise and benefited a good cause. With the wildfire response in California and other parts of the West putting stress on the available resources, organizations like the Red Cross need support.

  • Planned Solutions Leading Economic Indicators Show Mixed Results
In this episode of the Planned Solutions Incorporated Podcast, The pace of the US economic recovery has been in question ever since the CARES Act stimulus ended. This has caused many economists to watch August’s leading economic indicators closely for any signs that the rate of growth may be slowing. The first data available is the Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) which shows mixed results. The indexes show continued growth in August but the pace of improvement slowed in many areas.
Also, Transportation data is often used as a leading economic indicator for manufacturing and retail sales data. Recently, transportation data has shown a strong recovery in freight volumes and the prices charged to transport goods from place to place. This may be an early sign that the US economy will continue to recover in the Fall as it heals from the economic damage from the Coronavirus.
And, Unemployment benefits were expanded for many beneficiaries as a part of the Coronavirus stimulus bill passed in March. In addition, some states have continued to pay increased benefits in response to an executive order signed after the increased CARES act benefits expired. Beneficiaries of these payments need to understand that they are taxable for federal tax purposes so they will be added to their taxable income and could result in tax owed on their 2020 federal tax return.
Plus a look at the Planned Solutions Incorporated Office Bulletin Board- After a lot of careful consideration and discussion with the staff at Rancho Murieta Country Club we have decided to move forward with a smaller, socially distanced golf tournament. • PLANNED SOLUTIONS STOCKMARKET RECOVERY US RETAIL HOME OFFICE DEDUCTIONS
In this episode of the Planned Solutions Incorporated Podcast, The stock market, as measured by large company US stocks, has made a full recovery. However, other areas of the stock market, such as small and mid-sized company stocks as well as foreign stocks have yet to make it back into positive territory for the year much less recover to the highs from February. This is likely at least partly due to the difference in the makeup of these stock indexes as well as their access to capital.
Also, US retail sales made a full recovery to pre-pandemic levels in July. This occurred despite a new peak in Coronavirus cases which occurred in late July. The increase in spending partially reflects a change in consumer spending patterns and is partially due to the expanded unemployment benefits which were paid through the end of July.
And, many people are asking if they can claim the home office tax deduction now that they are required to work from home due to the Coronavirus. The short answer is that the changes made in the 2017 Tax Act eliminated the ability for most people to claim deductions related to employee business expenses. Therefore, employees will not be able to deduct their home office expenses on their federal taxes. However, business owners and independent contracts may benefit from this deduction.
