  • The Pros and Cons of Canada's Food Guide – PTP294
In this episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast, we talk all about Canada's Food Guide. As you may know, in January (2019) Canada's Food Guide made some pretty bold changes and statements that we are excited to share with you. And since March is nutrition month (isn't every month nutrition month around here?) we thought this would be a great time to talk about what we liked, what we didn't like and what's really going on behind the scenes. Canada's Food Guide had not been updated in many years and the way Canadians learned about nutrition was, well, kind of, not with the times. With new updates, Canada's Food Guide promoted a healthier lifestyle and has become much more well rounded. It takes into account not just eating more plants (this is huge), but increasing water intake as well as the importance of daily movement. Find out our detailed perspective in this episode. And of course, it wouldn't be The Plant Trainers Podcast without actionable tips…so we have some great swaps you can start using or share with your friends and family! We would love to see you joining the conversations on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter @planttrainers. • Eating For Health and Building Communities with Anthony Masiello – PTP289
In this episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast, we talk with Anthony Masiello about his transformation story, building connection through local community events and plant-based parenthood. Just a decade and a half ago Anthony was over 300 pounds, and a new dad faced with the startling reality that watching his kids grow up may not be a part of his journey. We unpack what goals and steps had to be taken to actually change his life and how healthy habits may even be the most important areas to concentrate on. Many of you have told us you feel alone and wish you had meetup groups in your area. Well, this episode will give you the tools you need to start connecting with others with similar lifestyles. We loved connecting with Anthony and know you will enjoy the show. If you know anyone who is trying to lose weight and feels like it's just not going to happen for them, a loving note and a link to this podcast may be exactly what they need to hear. Since regaining his own health, Anthony has developed a passion for helping others to do and sustain the same. After more than 20 years working in traditional healthcare, Anthony shifted his professional focus toward prevention and is now a plant-based health coach, speaker, educator, and consultant with certifications in plant-based nutrition, food addiction counselling and is working toward his national board certification in health & wellness coaching using positive psychology. His story has been featured on the Megyn Kelly Today show, on PBS, in The Huffington Post, in the bestselling book Eat to Live, and by Forks Over Knives, Runners World, Plant Pure, and numerous radio shows, podcasts, and articles. • Rethinking Our Mental Health – PTP288
In this episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast, we talk all about mental health. This is something we have done before on the show. Back in 2015, we put out our first episode mental health. Shoshana gave a fairly detailed description of her experience with mental illness up until then. Since then we have discovered that she was actually suffering from PTSD. Our journey together dealing with these issues have not always been easy, but we have learned a lot of techniques that help us and that we can pass onto others. We hope today's show will remind you that you are not alone, give you some coping mechanisms to add to your toolbox and help fight the stigma that goes along with what can be an extremely isolating set of illnesses. • The Birth of Plant-Based Meal Kits with Purple Carrot's Andy Levitt – PTP287
In this episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast, we talk with Andy Levitt, founder of the ever so popular Purple Carrot. Truth, we were not really sure where this episode was going to go, but with Andy's honest and vibrant personality, we were able to get all the answers we wanted. How did he get the inspiration to begin a fully plant-based meal kit company when he wasn't even plant-based, yet? How did his Crohn's play into the picture? Who is consuming the vast amount of plant-based meal kits and why? Is Purple Carrot just preaching to the converted? And then there is the idea of children and how their unique personalities make them a driving force in the world. While this podcast is about information and is not an ad at all, we wanted you to know that we had the opportunity to try a kit while we were down in Florida and it was easy and delicious. We hope you saw the pics on our Instagram Stories. We must say, this was an extremely personable podcast and we hope you feel the love. Please join the conversations happening on social media, specifically @plantttrainers on Instagram and if you are Purple Carrot consumers, please tag us in your posts! After being diagnosed with Crohn's disease in 2012, Andy began incorporating more plant-based meals into his diet to combat his illness. When this lifestyle change literally altered the course of his disease, Andy left his 20+ year career in pharmaceuticals and launched Purple Carrot out of his garage in October of 2014 with the mission to educate people about the power of food as medicine – and to introduce consumers to the health and environmental benefits that stem from plant-based eating. Today, the company is recognized as the first and only 100% plant-based meal kit, delivering fresh pre-portioned ingredients and simple step-by-step guides for people to make delicious, healthy plant-based meals in 40 minutes or less in the comfort of their own home. Working to educate consumers on the 20,000 edible plants available today, Purple Carrot creates six seasonal meals every week that make vegetables the star of the show without being dull or boring. Since launching three and a half years ago, Purple Carrot has established itself as a key player in the $2.2 billion meal-kit space, having experienced a staggering 400% growth since 2017. In this episode we discuss: Becoming plant-based Crohn's Mixed family eating styles The birth of Purple Carrot What's growing faster vegan or plant-based Most consumers of plant-based meals are omnivorous Romaine lettuce Types of meals Tom Brady and TB12 Children being vegan The state of the world With great power comes great responsibility School lunches The future of purple carrot Actionable tips for quick change Links to things we mentioned: Easy Recipes For Busy Parents School Lunches: A Guide To Making It Easy and Healthy Andy Levitt – Twitter, Instagram, Facebook Purple Carrot – Website, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook Longevity with 93 Year-Old Irene – PTP055 Thank you to this month's Patrons for supporting us on Patreon: "Joe" Millie Pearson Mary Lou Fusi Carmen Fanous Emily Iaconelli Spanish Armada Michele Olender Don't forget to contact us at [email protected] with your question for our Plant Trainers Facebook Lives!
