  • When Plant-Based Kids Are Faced With Non-Vegan Foods – PTP194
What do we as parents do when our plant-based kids are faced with non-vegan foods? Vibeka…this is a doozy! There are so many ways to deal with our kids’ choices to eat animal products when they are with friends or other family members. It all comes down to your family values with regards to health, animal rights and also your parenting style. The short answer is as long as you’re calm, cool and respectful, there really is no wrong answer, only ones that are more suited for your unique situation. How I may handle my plant-based kids may be completely different from everyone else in the Healthy Plant-Based Families Facebook group! I really had to think hard on this one and I put together three answers for today. To all the listeners, these answers are not intended to limit you to what I talk about today. They are meant to inspire you to think deeply about how you would handle your plant-based kids and certainly have a conversation around the topic with any other parents or guardians your kids may have. The age of your kids may come into effect here and you may also find that your own personal reaction to this situation will evolve over time. So which are you…Ron, Harry or Hermione?   This week’s question: Vibeka Asks: “Hey Plant Trainers, How should I deal with my plant-based kids choices to eat animal products when they are with friends or other family members?”   Links to things we mentioned: – Use “PlantTrainers” at check-out for 15% off your order – Use “PlantTrainers” at check-out for 20% off your order   Thank you to this month’s Patrons for supporting us on : “Joe” Millie Pearson Stu Dolnick Mary Lou Fusi Don’t forget to contact us at  with your question for our “Hey Plant Trainers” segment!   We hope you enjoyed this podcast! • Concussion Awareness and Management – PTP192
If a concussion is suspected, then concussion awareness and management are key in get you back to activity. A concussion is a brain injury. A person doesn’t have to lose consciousness to have a concussion. Symptoms can often be very subtle. Proper protective gear should always be worn (i.e. helmet for biking or contact sports, mouthguards, etc…). A concussion may be caused by a direct blow to the head, face, neck, or anywhere else that causes a severe or sudden movement to the head or neck. Getting clearance from a medical doctor should be required prior to the person injured being able to return to participate in the activity.   This week’s question: Ryan asks: “Hey Plant Trainers, I think I may have a concussion, but I’m not sure of the actual signs and symptoms. I’m going to the doctor, but I’m sure he will tell me to just take some time off and rest. What should I know about managing my possible concussion?”   Concussion awareness – signs & symptoms: Confusion, disorientation, Loss of consciousness, Headache, Dizziness, Nausea, Vomiting, Loss of Balance, Blurry vision, Ringing in the ears, Slow or slurred speech, seeing “stars”, feeling dazed or confused, emotional or personality changes.   Concussion Management & Rehabilitation: You should never return to play while symptomatic. When someone displays any signs or symptoms of a concussion, one should not return to participate in a game, practice or activity. Make sure that the person is not left alone and monitoring for any negative changes is very important to watch out for. Make sure the person gets checked by a doctor.   Here are 6 steps before returning to activity if you have been diagnosed with a concussion and you must be asymptomatic for 24 hours between each step (these steps are designed for competitive athletes, but anyone with a head injury can follow these guidelines): No activity, complete rest. Once asymptomatic, proceed to step 2. Light aerobic exercise such as walking or stationary cycling. Sport-specific training (i.e. running in soccer, skating in hockey). Non-contact training drills. Can start resistance training. Full-contact training (after medical clearance). Game play Remember…the most important thing is concussion awareness and ensuring you are safe to resume activity.   Thank you to this month’s Patrons for supporting us on : “Joe” Millie Pearson Stu Dolnick Mary Lou Fusi Don’t forget to contact us at  with your question for our “Hey Plant Trainers” segment!   We hope you enjoyed this podcast! • Making Choices Through Mindset with Howard Jacobson, Josh LaJaunie & Sid Garza-Hillman – PTP189
Making choices through mindset is our focus in today’s episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast – this one’s a special treat for you! While we were in Marshall Texas for Healthfest, we sat down with Howard Jacobson (from the Plant Yourself Podcast), Josh LaJaunie (you may have seen him on the cover of Runner’s World Magazine) and Sid Garza-Hillman (from the Approaching The Natural Podcast) for an unscripted, unplanned roundtable conversation. • Knee Pain and What To Do About It – PTP188
Knee pain can occur in different parts of the knee and happen for various reasons. The knee is actually the most unstable joint in our body and gets put through an extreme amount of pressure especially when we do activities like running or jumping. Actually, during activities like running and jumping, the knee must withstand forces two to four times an individual’s own body weight. Think about that for a moment. Because of that small fact, the knee is a prime target for injury. Let’s reduce the risk and avoid knee pain!   This week’s question: Andrew asks: “Hey Plant Trainers, I’ve been running a bit lately and have starting to feel some knee pain. I’m not really sure why it’s happening, but is there something I can do about it?”   Links to things we mentioned: – Use “PlantTrainers” at check-out for 15% off your order – Use “PlantTrainers” at check-out for 20% off your order   Exercise Descriptions: Stability Ball Hamstring Curls Begin by lying on your back on the floor with your legs straight, knees slightly bent, heels on top of a stability ball, toes pointed up towards the ceiling. Your arms should be down at your sides, palms down. Lift your hips by pushing down on the ball with your heels; your shoulders, hips and ankles should form a straight line. Roll the ball toward you by pulling your heels in toward your glutes. Keeping your hips off the ground, roll the ball back out to the starting position and repeat. Go for 2-3 sets of 12-15 reps. Perform this exercise using one leg for a greater challenge.   Squats Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Bend your knees slightly and keep your head level. Lower your hips until your thighs are almost parallel to the floor. Pause briefly, then slowly straighten your legs and hips at the same time. Keep your back flat throughout the exercise. Squat only as low as you can with proper technique. You can increase tension by holding dumbbells while doing the exercise. Do 2-3 sets of 12-15 reps.   Lunges Stand with your feet apart, back straight and your head level. Step forward 3-4 feet with your left foot and drop your hips until your back knee nearly touches the floor. Pause briefly, then slowly push back to the start and repeat with the other leg. Don’t bend your front knee beyond your toes. Take it slow. Do 2-3 sets of 12-15 reps for each side.   Thank you to this month’s Patrons for supporting us on : “Joe” Millie Pearson Stu Dolnick Mary Lou Fusi Don’t forget to contact us at  with your question for our “Hey Plant Trainers” segment!   We hope you enjoyed this podcast!
