  • The Microwave, To Use It or Lose It – PTP174
The microwave is a hard call for so many people. Should we use it or should we lose it? We keep hearing that it is bad for us, but it is SO convenient that we want to hear good news. There are many sites out there that tell their readers the worst news about microwaves, but can they be trusted? Are those sites working off of good research? The question about using the microwave or not is one we do not have an answer for specifically. We hope we provide you with enough information to make informed decisions. As we find more information, we will keep you in the know.   This week’s question: Margaret asks: “Hey Plant Trainers, does microwaving food change the nutritional value of the food?  I heard that microwaving can change the chemical makeup somehow of the food so that the body can no longer absorb the nutrients.  I also heard that it kills any live enzymes.  Is this true?  Sometimes it is convenient to use the microwave, especially for things like potatoes.  But I have been avoiding it for about a year since I heard this.  I think it is ok to microwave water for tea, but I am not even sure about that.  If you could help me get to the bottom of this, it would be greatly appreciated.”   Links to things we mentioned: by using the code “PlantTrainers” at checkout – Use “PlantTrainers” at check-out for 15% off your order – Use “PlantTrainers” at check-out for 20% off your order   Thank you to this month’s Patrons for supporting us on : “Joe” Millie Pearson Stu Dolnick Mary Lou Fusi               Don’t forget to contact us at  with your question for our “Hey Plant Trainers” segment!   Join our FaceBook Groups:   Do you want to create lifelong healthy eating habits for you or your family? • Eating Potatoes For A Year with Andrew Spud Fit Taylor – PTP173
In today’s episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast we talk to Andrew “Spud Fit” Taylor, commonly known as that guy who ate potatoes for a year. We talked to him about the Australian diet, how he grew to 300 lbs despite his active lifestyle and of course why he chose potatoes. Andrew tells us about the physical and mental health changes he experiences and how he was able to continue with this one food for so long. This is a great episode for anyone with food addiction or anyone interested in the story behind Spud Fit. Andrew Taylor is known as the man who embarked on a quest to eat only potatoes for the entirety of 2016. The former junior Australian Champion Marathon Kayaker’s journey started in late 2015 after another failed attempt at dieting. Heavier than before, with clinical anxiety and depression, Andrew realized he was a food addict. The former high school physical education and health teacher with a degree in Applied Science (Human Development) spent six weeks researching ‘the perfect food’ before settling on the humble spud.  Here ‘The Spud Fit Challenge’ was born. Andrew would eat only potatoes for an entire year. The world watched through mainstream media as his weight melted away, health improved and the dark clouds of depression lifted over the course of a year. Andrew’s first book, The D.I.Y. Spud Fit Challenge: A How-to-Guide to Tackling Food Addiction with the Humble Spud, was co-authored with his wife Mandy van Zanen and has helped many people to break the shackles of food addiction. Andrew now spends his time coaching others through food addiction, speaking, making YouTube videos, working on his own podcast and currently writing his second book.   In this episode we discuss: Getting bigger The Australian diet Mental health & depression Unable to change Parent-teacher night 1 slice of pizza Quitting food Potatoes Overcoming depression Food addiction Failing Tips for overcoming food addiction   Links to things we mentioned: by using the code “PlantTrainers” at checkout – Use “PlantTrainers” at check-out for 20% off your order – Use “PlantTrainers” at check-out for 15% off your order Andrew’s , , , ,   Thank you to this month’s Patrons for supporting us on : “Joe” Miriam Selick Millie Pearson Stu Dolnick               Don’t forget to contact us at  with your question for our “Hey Plant Trainers” segment!   Join our FaceBook Groups:   Do you want to create lifelong healthy eating habits for you or your family? • Running The Parks with Bill Sycalik – PTP169
In today’s episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast we talk to Bill Sycalik about running the parks. Bill is a plant-based ultramarathon runner and the founder of the National Parks Marathon Project, his full-time effort to run a self-directed, self-managed, self-measured 26.2 miles in all 59 U.S. National Parks. He’s on a mission to bring people together and experience nature through running the parks. Until May of 2016, Bill was living the typical stressful corporate life as a management consultant in New York City. When he read about the 100th anniversary of the U.S. National Park Service, Bill thought what better way to experience the parks than covering 26.2 miles in each one. He saw an opportunity to extract himself from the office, promote the National Parks and encourage people to get out and move in nature. Bill recognizes the value of a plant based diet for high athletic performance but now understands that it is not only what you eat which leads to optimum results in your life. Doing something fulfilling, managing stress, taking breaks and spending time in nature are all equally important. Bill wants to serve as an example to those who might feel trapped by their job, location, or lifestyle including diet, that it is possible to make a change. Since June 2016 he’s completed 32 trail marathons averaging one every seven days in some of the most beautiful natural places in the world. One of his goals is for someone from the local running community to accompany him on some or all of each run. So far people have joined him at 12 of the parks. We talk to Bill about the deep meaning behind running the parks and finding purpose in life. He offers his insight on making the decision and planning to create experience in your life when you want to do something outside of normal expectations. Bill still has some running and planning to do and you can join him for a run to show your support.   In this episode we discuss: Taking a break Leaving corporate Limiting beliefs How to know when you’re ready Making decisions The parks Challenges Planning First Aid Running with others Nutrition Change   Links to things we mentioned: – Use “PlantTrainers” at check-out for 15% off your order by using the code “PlantTrainers” at checkout Bill Sycalik: , , , , – on Generosity.com – on Strava National NBC News: Food Addiction – From Addict To Athlete with Dave Wiskowski – – A Great National Parks Resource   Thank you to this month’s Patrons for supporting us on : “Joe” Millie Pearson Stu Dolnick Mary Lou Fusi Don’t forget to contact us at  with your question for our Plant Trainers Facebook Lives!   We hope you enjoyed this podcast! • Should I Count Calories or Measure My Food? – PTP166
Should I count calories or measure my food? Eating a whole food plant-based diet and knowing which pre-made foods are ok gives you the ability to eat to that sweet spot: when you’re not too full to stand up, but won’t be hungry again in 30 minutes. Basically, you’re free to eat as much as you need to. The amazing thing is that eating can be so simple. We often put way too much energy and thought into what we eat and sometimes for good reason. Counting calories has been used as a weight loss tactic for years and is still being used by many weight loss programs today. Does it work, sure. But do you really want to be restricted to a certain number of calories all day every day?   This week’s question: Kelly asks: “Hey Plant Trainers, Should I count calories or measure my food?”   Links to things we mentioned: – Use “PlantTrainers” at check-out for 15% off your order by The Manly Zone by using the code “PlantTrainers” at checkout   Thank you to this month’s Patrons for supporting us on : “Joe” Miriam Selick Millie Pearson Stu Dolnick Don’t forget to contact us at  with your question for our Plant Trainers Facebook Lives!   We hope you enjoyed this podcast!
