  • PPA - Platonic Polyamory's Mickey Reece's Platonic Polyamory

Mickey Reece made it this week! As a bunch of scum sucking freaks, we all felt a kindred spirit in the DIY, and even the more recent sellout arthouse horror films of Mickey Reece.

If you're unfamiliar with Mickey Reece, just know that he is probably 30-something years old, but his IMDB features 37 film and only 9 of them are available publicly. Because of this, his predilection for casual experimentation, and his remote origins in bumfuck, Oklahoma, the press has lavished him with all sorts of cute nicknames like, "Flyover Fassbinder." A title I wish I had acquired while making films in Indiana, but I refuse professional or amateur envy.

We talked to Mickey Reece's Mickey Reece about what drives his story and production choices, his "real" job, and how beautiful life would be if he could sell out.

You can watch Climate of the Hunter on Shudder, Agnes on Hulu, and a handful of his older films (as in, more than 2 years old) on Alamo OnDemand. The last link includes the destined to be cult classic, Mickey Reece's Alien, a film about Elvis, Priscilla, and Elvis's illegitimate extra(?) terrestrial baby. Keep an eye on your local film festivals for Mickey Reece's latest, Country Gold, which depicts the time Garth Brooks met George Jones shortly before the latter was cryogenically frozen. If you prefer to multitask, you can also watch his one minute Instagram Reels for George's Liquor in Oklahoma City @stopbygeorgesokc

And as long as you're clicking around, why not see what Jennifer C. Martin's up to? Brandon and I don't have links. Except for this one.

  • PPA - Waiting for Mickey

I was listening to Desert Oracle recently and noticed he stopped using episode numbers and it occurred to me that if there's anything less pointless than naming these episodes, it's assigning them numbers. So, no more of that.

This is a non-episode in which I fucked up scheduling our guest and he didn't show, so we talked about Tim Tebow and movies with weird thoughts on trans people. I also posted the zoom link on twitter out of curiosity and we got zoom bombed by some people who's only hobby is apparently saying the 'n' word. We were already having a problematic conversation guys, we don't care.

We'll have on Mickey Mouse, the star of Fantasia and Steamboat Willie next week. Thanks to everyone that listened to our episode with Ileana.

  • PPA - E8 - Aupair Nightmares w/ Ileana

We talk to my old friend Ileana about her experience as a Mexican citizen working as an au pair in the United States for two years. It may shock you to learn that being a Mexican woman living in an American family's home while employed as a domestic worker is not great! Ileana discusses the long hours, low pay, the deceptive agencies that facilitate these matchups, and the bizarrely manipulative and boundary pushing actions of these American host families.

It sucks. Great talk. Also, Brandon inquires about incest in polyamory and then I had to cut almost all of Jennifer's response. Someone please let her know that I am in fact editing these to make her look better. Most of the time. It probably does make her look worse sometimes. I'm not the greatest judge of character.

    Warm Regards,

    Rob

Oh, and here's links Ileana wanted us to share.

This is the activist group she works with, including speaking to members of congress recently (who basically asked her, "Why do you think you deserve to live with dignity?")

And a couple of their fact sheets on au pairs:

  • PPA - E7 - Love, That's America w/ Laura Squirrel

Long delayed recording and now long delayed upload. Brandon and Jennifer were both somehow on vacation at the same time, then I was down for the count with intestinal issues, then Jennifer and I both had COVID, then I was down with intestinal issues again... and then they returned again after recording.

But, here we are. As previously discussed here and in our 2015 documentary about her Indiana Noise Fest, I met Laura in 2015 because of said noise festival. She came out to me as a trans woman a couple years ago, but it was my understanding although she's transitioned she wasn't really into talking about it. Now with everything going on, she is.

Shit's bleak right now, particularly for trans people and especially trans kids. Laura talks about coming out and transitioning in her late 20s and the struggles she had between realizing what was going on as a child and being up against an unforgiving culture and confused family. She recounts it all with empathy and humor.

Recording was wonky this time, but I have plans to deal with it in the future as I'm hopefully more healthy and capable of sitting for long periods of time. Sorry if the references go over your head.

As always, you can check out Laura's work on Bandcamp.

  • PPA - E6 - Physics, Noise, & Legal Trouble with Tripp Nasty

Tripp Nasty takes us deep into the strange and scary world of Denver's alt music scene. Tripp discusses his history as a computer programmer(??) and future physicist(???) before recently going for his masters in accounting(????) all while developing a deep appreciation of sound and Moog's synthesizers. He also talks about landing in jail for two days during the pandemic (?????) and a Denver industrial band that landed in jail themselves after a prolonged harassment campaign of Tripp and other local musicians that involved fake tours, tear gas, and home break-ins(?????????????).

Because Tripp's connections in the underground run deep and Brandon and I already name drop so many bands that range in obscurity, I've included short clips interspersed and laid under as bed music throughout the episode for some additional context for people like Jennifer.

The episode opens with Tripp Nasty's "Western Pride" and closes with "On a Snowy Afternoon," both off his recent album Making the Pythons Dance. Other clips in order of appearance include Shonen Knife, the Disco Biscuits, Echo Beds, William Basinski, Sun City Girls, Crash Worship, James Chance & the Contortions, Yonatan Gat and the Eastern Medicine Singers, Harry Pussy, Tripp Nasty's "Snowy Afternoon," the Forbidden Planet soundtrack, Delia Derbyshire, various modular synth clips from Tripp Nasty Sounds on Instagram, Ezra Buchla, and more from Tripp Nasty Sounds. I'm not gonna post song titles since I'm not trying to get us unlisted.

You can find Tripp Nasty on his website, his bandcamp, and twitter.

Jennifer C. Martin also has a new fiction piece up influenced by her new relationship. Give that a read at Olney Magazine.

  • PPA - E5 - The Suspicious Mind of Robert Skvaria

The opening track is a bootleg recording of the Elvis impersonator fronted British Nirvana tribute act, Elvana. Enjoy.

Today's guest is writer and conspiracy theorist aficionado Robert Skvaria. He helps us parse out the difference in approach between right-wing (bullshit) and left-wing (mostly true) conspiracies. We talk about Alex Jones, the CIA, FBI, and how religion both factors into different conspiracies and can be victimized by political conspiracies. It occurs to me now that we failed to ask him about Elvis. Maybe next time.

You can find Robert's writing on his blog, http://www.mondoamericana.net or you can follow him on Twitter @RobertSkvarlia, where he's much more prolific.

If you want to watch all 10 minutes of Alex Jones's stand up routine and the ensuing 20 minutes of Doug Stanhope trying to control the audience, you can watch the Incident In Austin bootleg on YouTube.

  • PPA - E4 - In the Mood for CinePunk Joshua Alvarez

This podcast is called Platonic Polyamory now.

For this episode Jennifer wanted Josh to pick out a movie for us to watch and discuss, but Josh didn't want to so I lied and said he picked Chungking Express because I knew she'd love it. And she did. Anyway, we tried to do the whole movie podcast thing like Cinepunx does but none of us are motivated or structured enough to actually plan something like that so we just fizzled out and talked about different forms of polyamory again. You can see the wild chart Jennifer references here: https://i.redd.it/jzlw4prhumv81.jpg

Then we talked to Josh Alvarez for an hour about his various projects including his main band, Crossed Keys, which features at least one legendary (according to Brandon) hardcore musician, his podcast CinePunx, all of which he'd apparently prefer quit in favor of doing heroin.

Episode opens with Crossed Keys' "Times of Grace" and ends with "Jeff Pelly vs. The Empire"

Check out more from Crossed Keys here: https://crossedkeys.bandcamp.com/

See and here more from CinePunx here: https://cinepunx.com

I don't know if you can still find his "Morrissey is a Racist" t-shirt anywhere.

Fun talk. Cool band. Great t-shirt.

  • PPA - E2 - Your Music Sucks w/ Laura Squirrel

An Undressing Underground regular joins us this week to explain noise music to Jennifer and the Get Along Gang (and her fan fiction about it) to all of us. We also talk about Anal Cunt (Jennifer's new favorite band), Eric Clapton, obscure midwest noise acts we know personally, Jennifer's OnlyFans and the paupers that patronize it, Joyful Noise Records, and whatever Laura's tangents are about.

Features music by Laura's noise acts, Ghosts of Dead Tables and Kathy's Special Brownies as well as some clips of Anal Trump and Get Thalz's Harsh Noise Synth Generator, "TRAUMA."

  • Platonic Polyamory - E1 - Cat Eyes

The first episode of our new series, Platonic Polyamory. Some guy named Josh that follows Jennifer on Twitter tells us about the Christian lore permeating throughout the Insane Clown Posse's music.

We also discuss the ethics of talking during previews, places Jennifer and Brandon have had sex, annoying poly identities, stuff our exes are sending each other money for on Venmo because they haven't removed us as friends, and we watch planes land in LA for a little bit.
