I spent the whole day in Tulum and I wondered if I would get the opportunity to see baby turtles hatch from their nest.
Well, I did miss them submerging from the sand but I sure did get the chance to experience this bucket list moment!
We were enjoying dinner when the groundskeeper of the restaurant asked us, the only two people in the establishment other than the employees if we wanted to help guide the turtles to the sea.
Uh, yeah, of course!
I was telling my friend all day, "I hope the turtles hatch tonight!"
Well, it was written in the stars for me because not only did they hatch but I was given the opportunity to help guide them into the water with my cell phone light.
Now, we had a couple patrons from the beach club next door come over to tell us that we shouldn't shine the light on the turtles because they get disoriented.
The groundskeeper kindly educated them and told them that because there is no moon out and the only lights on are the restaurant lights they use their flashlight to call them to the ocean.
He also explained that the reason they would seem disoriented is that there are too many people with lights on at the same time.
There were only 2 lights on this night, from me and the groundskeeper.
I stood by the shore and the groundskeeper made sure the turtles did not go towards the restaurant.
Luckily for the turtles, we were there to rescue the ones that wanted a little snack from the restaurant before they went out to the sea, and there were a lot of them.
This was my first experience with baby turtles and I learned a lot.
1. They DO NOT disorient with the light.
2. They DO get disoriented when there are multiple lights standing on the beach looking for them.
3. You should stand at the shore with your light to call them to the water.
4. If there are establishments nearby and there is no moon out you most definitely need to help guide them with your light to the water.
5. Always look for stragglers because it's apparent in this video that you will find a lot who completely go the wrong way.
