Today, we're talking about investing in your life. This is part of the 20-week challenge on how you can build your resilience in 2023. The goal is to make it so that you bend like a willow in strong winds versus breaking like an oak when things get tough. We are now on lesson 14, so let's get started.
When do I suggest this lesson?:
Whenever I hear my clients talking or valuing things over experiences.
Whenever I hear a theme of them observing rather than participating and
When they ignore the value of time, and I think, ugh, this sounds like they're coasting.
They're taking the path of least resistance, that there's a lot more opportunity out there for them.
So what can they do to invest in themselves?
We are our most significant investment. It's not our home. It's not our car. It's not the balance in our 401k retirement plan or our stock portfolio. It's really ourselves because we are the only thing that continues with us constantly throughout the duration of our life. Cars come and go. Homes come and go. Retirement balances certainly dive up and down based on the whims of the stock market. And so we really want to invest in ourselves.

We're in the middle of our 20-week challenge to building your resilience so that you bend instead of break when facing adversity and tough times. And I think we've got some tough times. Well, on the way for a lot of people. Layoffs are happening in the tech sector and people are struggling a bit. We are also struggling with inflation and recession. And so we really wanna build our resilience so that we can handle all of these challenges.
Last week, we talked about being problem-free, having systems to do so, and how the solution is integrity plus boundaries plus standards. This week we're gonna be talking about reorienting around your values.
We started off with the "what", then, what is sort of the demographics, the packaging of a person. And then we got into the "who", the who are you really like? What are you made of? et cetera. How you can make all of these things work for you? Our goal is to have the who and the how match the what.
So who you are inside, and how you run your life matches what people see on the outside, and that they're not different.
When do I suggest this lesson?:
- Feeling strectched thin.
- Not a lot of passion around your activities.
- Your community no longer feels like a fit.
This is WHO You are:
- How you go about your life
- The fingerprint that you leave on things
- Satisfy your needs, wants, your future
Organize YOU around these values:
- Your time
- Your interactions
- Your spending/savings should "scream" YOU
Don't Forget:
- Rising tide lifts all boats.
- Grow together
- Theme sheet at our site
And that's it for this week. I hope you found these tips helpful.

So we're in the middle of our 20-week challenge. We are at episode number 12 of 20. Today, we're talking about being a problem-free zone and just being problem free in general. We're doing this to build our resilience and part of being so strong and resilient is that when we have problems, they don't have to be this giant pothole. They're more like a slight speed bump or Hmm, was that an acorn I just ran over? It's pretty smooth sailing and we really want to build that.
So let's get into today's lesson. Now, if you're a leader, this whole 20-lesson set is available to your organization to build resilience. It's a super important part of change management. The most effective change strategies come when there are strong leadership, strong communication, and strong employee resilience, those three things. When they are weak, change efforts fail.
So if you feel like this is something that you want to do for your employees to show that you care about them, as people contact us, we are available to do this both live, virtually, and in person. Contact us at [email protected] or [email protected].
When do I suggest this lesson? This lesson is really when you're sick of drama or you're sick of something being such a huge hiccup in your life, you don't want the same song or different verse, and you really need some more permanent solutions.
Key Points:
- Problems are normal but they don't have to be something that's so upsetting.
- The stronger our foundation is, the fewer problems we actually encounter
- Problem free = Frees up time
Don't Forget:
- Rising tide lifts all boats.
- Grow together
- Theme sheet at our site
And that's it for this week. I hope you found these tips helpful.

If you've been around for a while, you know we're in the middle of our 20-week challenge. This is week 11. And this 20-week challenge is all about building your resilience. This week we're gonna be talking about preparation and protection.
But before I jump into that, I wanna let you know that my new book entitled “ Meet Me in the Middle” is already out on Amazon. This is a guide to overcoming polarization. So if you wanna know more about polarization, what happens, how to overcome it, and how to prevent it, you can find it out there on Amazon and we'll put the link below.
So onto today's topic, “preparation, and protection”, that sounds like a strange topic. What is it about? Well, when we have things that we value, we wanna make sure that we are protecting those things and we're well prepared for that because, in the field of project management, we do something called risk management.
When do I suggest this lesson?:
- You're exhausted from not having a system.
- Always playing catch up.
- Feeling at risk.
Benefits:
- Freedom
- Peace
- Preparation
- Small steps forward
Tips:
- Choose one topic at a time - leverage what works well - then pivot
Don't Forget:
- Rising tide lifts all boats.
- Grow together

For the past few weeks, we've been focused on building up your resilience. This is still part of our 20-week challenge. Building up your resilience makes you flexible, where you bend instead of break when you're faced with challenges, and this is one of the top three elements that affect an organization's change success rate. So we look at the strength of the leadership, the strength of the communication, and just how resilient the employee body is. And right now there's a lot of stuff going on in the marketplace. Obviously, there are things like this recession that's going on. We're starting to see a lot of layoffs in the tech community, and we want to make sure that people can withstand that. That regardless of what's happening around them, they feel secure and safe.
And so today, we're gonna be talking about deepening the community and how that community can really serve you and be of service to them.
Key Points:
- Your community is those around you - casually and intentionally.
- Your mail carrier and weaving guild - your friends and associates/association.
- This is where you CHOOSE to spend your TIME.
Choose the Experience:
- Develop what you want
- Similar interests and values
- Continually upgrading
Experiment:
- What feeds you?
- What drains you?
Don't Forget:
- Rising tide lifts all boats.
- Grow together

This week, we're talking about strengthening your family. For the past couple of weeks, we've been talking about the who in coaching. It's the innards of yourself, the stuff that's timeless, that has to do with your values, your boundaries, your standards, and family is a big component of that.
Now, not everybody has grown up in a family that's really nurturing to them, but everybody has a chosen family. It may consist of some biological members, and it may consist of some friend members that are like family. And to be clear, in this lesson, we are talking about both. So let's get started.
When do I suggest this lesson?
I suggest this lesson. Whenever you're feeling disconnected, you might feel a separation. You're not spending a lot of quantity time with these folks. And quantity drives quality. I have a colleague, his name is Doug Floor. He's a very well-respected coach. And his historical research has proven that you cannot have quality time without quantity time.
Key Points:
- Families are people, and people are not perfect,
- They are not there to fill your needs - Get an auto SS
- Where can you improve?
Choose the Experience:
- Resolve your issues
- Adjust your attitude
- Measure the quantity to drive the quality.
Don't Forget:
- Rising tide lifts all boats.
- Grow together

Today specifically, we're gonna be talking about personal standards. Now, if you're just joining us for the first time, do know that on our website you can, or in the show notes, you can download the personal theme sheet that will help you set some goals around this 20-week challenge. You can do them in any order whatsoever. It may be based on what you hear as little triggers or the lessons you're gonna pursue, but recognize that each of these lessons is designed to help you build your resilience so that when stressful events happen, you bend and don't break.
So let's get started on personal standards. Last week we talked about boundaries. Boundaries are like fences, and they set the stage for what people may say or do around you.
Personal standards are what happened inside the fence. How well is your yard groomed? Are you allowing your children to haphazardly leave their bicycles, or do they need to be parked in a bike rack? That kind of thing. So think of that analogy when it comes to standards. So I suggest this lesson when I hear my clients say things like they're ready to upgrade. The old feel stale to them. They feel like they're ready to level up.
Key Points:
- This is your chosen identity and correlating behaviors.
- Higher standards = Better life
- It's good to revisit your standards often
- Match your needs
- It's important what these standards feel like right now.
Don't Forget:
- Rising tide lifts all boats.
- Grow together

We've been talking about planning to build your resilience in 2023. The purpose of resilience is so that you can bend instead of break when you're under pressure, and we want to help you accumulate the tools to do that.
Today, we're going to be talking about boundaries. I love this topic because I think it's probably the one that propels people the furthest and the farthest when it comes to their mental health and well-being. So let's get into it.
So what are boundaries? Boundaries are like fences. They keep the good stuff in and the bad stuff out. You know, the trash that's blowing around, unwanted characters, et cetera. It's the definition of who we are and who we're not. A lot of times, when people have discomfort in the workplace or in family gatherings, and social settings, it's because one of their boundaries has been violated.

For 20 weeks, we are addressing a challenge that builds your resilience. Resilience helps us bend in a storm instead of breaking. We are all facing storms of different sorts, whether it be an illness, travel, pressures at work, or tough challenges. We want to be able to handle those with grace and confidence, so we're tackling 20 lessons that will help you build that resilience and help address change in a more productive way.
This week we're talking about getting your needs met. Well, that might sound a little prima donna, but I assure you we all have needs. It's perfectly normal to have needs. You're probably familiar with your social studies or your psychology studies in school with Maslow's hierarchy of needs. It wasn't depicted as a pyramid until much later, after he had created it. At the top of the pyramid is something called self-actualization, which means we've recognized our purpose in life and we're helping others fulfill theirs. But in between air, water, food, shelter, and some other things and self-actualization, we've actually got these personal needs. And these are the things that help us be the best version of ourselves. A lot of people resist the idea of having needs, but needs are actually central to who we are

Why do we want to restore our integrity, or why do we want to build our resilience?
Well, resilience helps us bend instead of break when times get tough. We want to create resilient people who can bounce back from adversity, whether it's stubbing your toe or losing your job. So the more we can work on the skills to do this, the equivalent of weight training to build your muscles. The more that we address each of these foundational issues, the better off you're going to be and the more resilient you'll become. When it comes to restoring your integrity, we are not talking about a moral compass of right and wrong. Who gets to decide that? That's a difficult thing to decide, but we are talking about staying true to you and what's important to you. So when it comes to integrity, you're either in or out. And most people have a good idea when they're going against their grain.

We assigned fieldwork because coaching without action is just entertainment.
