In Revelation 10, John is given a little scroll to 'eat'. When he first begins to chew on it, the scroll is sweet to the taste. But once he has digested it, it is bitter in his stomach. And such were many of the visions that John was given in the book of Revelation - bittersweet. We consider this paradigm, and look at one such bittersweet vision as we read in into chapter 11. As Joel looks out his window on the destruction left behind from the day of the locusts, his prophetic thoughts look forward to the even greater and more terrible day of the Lord. Listen in as we think through what he says about that day, and how we ought to be prepared for it in true repentance.

In 1915, a plague of locusts so severe struck the Holy Land that nearly the entire year's crops were ruined. The insects molted in four stages of maturiity - devouring different types of crops with each new stage - grapes, olives, and so on - before finally leaving the land, the damage having been done. It sounds exactly like what Joel describes in the first chapter of his prophecy. But the question is: Why? Why would God have allowed such devastation to come upon Joel and the rest of His covenant people? And why does He allow calamities - personal, commity, or nation-wide - happen today? But if we scratch out the idea of a whole day (not just 2-3 hours of it) set aside completely for worship and rest ... what else might we be scratching out with it?
