  • Ceiling fans dubbed a 'classic' hanging point installed in new Darwin jail
Three years since Darwin's $520 million jail opened, a coroner has said it beggars belief that a prison designed and constructed in the 21st century could contain such classic hanging points as ceiling fans, with nothing to mitigate against the risk. An inquest into the 2015 suicide of an inmate determined that load sensitive mechanisms can be installed on ceiling fans so they can't support the weight of a body.

  • Senator Matt Canavan quits Cabinet over discovery of dual citizenship
Another Senator has been caught out over dual citizenship, this time a member of Cabinet. Resources Minister and Queensland Senator Matt Canavan has discovered he was registered as an Italian citizen without his knowledge in 2007. • WA economy takes wooden spoon in national rankings - again
CommSec's latest quarterly State of the States has revealed Western Australia will have to wait at least another 12 months before lifting off the bottom national economic ranking. At the other end of the scale, population growth and strong housing markets have helped the economies of New South Wales and Victoria remain on top. The rest of the country's states and territories, say analysts, are still waiting for an X-factor to help drive their economies.

  • UNHCR accuses Federal Government of reneging on a deal to take refugees
The UN Refugee Agency says the Australian government has reneged on a deal to take refugees from Nauru or Manus Island as part of the US resettlement deal. In a statement, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees said the agency made an exception to help because of what it called a 'clear understanding' that refugees with 'close family ties in Australia would ultimately be allowed to settle there'. Yet the Commissioner, Filippo Grandi, says he's been recently informed that will not happen.

  • 'Family unity is a fundamental principle': UNHCR says refugee families should be reunited
Volker Turk is the Assistant High Commissioner for Protection at the UNHCR in Geneva. He says the UNHCR was cooperating with the Australian Government in its asylum seeker deal with the United States with the understanding that family members of refugees already settled in Australia would be allowed to join them. 'We always hoped there would be a strong humanitarian discretion applied' in the implementation of the policy, he says. 'A deep sense of humanity would dictate that people with such links would be allowed to be reunited with their family members.'

  • NSW Liberal rank and file warn of bitter fight ahead over candidate selection reforms
The Liberal Party in New South Wales is being warned it faces a bitter fight, and possibly a takeover by the Federal party, if it fails to carry out reforms demanded by the rank and file. Changes voted on at the weekend to give ordinary members more say in candidate selection were championed by former prime minister Tony Abbott. But there are more hurdles ahead. Changing the way MPs are selected needs approval by the 600 member State Council, and that body is controlled by the very factional warlords and lobbyists who don't want change at all.

  • Labor 'looking for ways to tighten up tax concessions': finance spokesman
The Opposition Leader, Bill Shorten, says Labor will soon announce more tax policies to address what he calls a two-class tax system. Speculation is it might mean a crackdown on family trusts - something the Treasurer, Scott Morrison, says the tax office is already targetting through a special taskforce. But Labor's finance spokesman Dr Jim Chalmers says Australia's tax system remains unfair and in need of change.
