  • Calls for inquiry into products causing chronic pain in women
A Victorian senator and some lawyers are calling for a federal inquiry into an implant product, which is being blamed for causing chronic pain and complications in thousands of Australian women. They want an investigation into the pharmaceutical company that makes the insertable mesh device used for pelvic floor reconstructions and they also want to know why the Therapeutic Goods Administration allowed it onto the market. A class action is already underway against the maker Johnson and Johnson. But the Australian Medical Association says an inquiry isn't needed, and the TGA isn't solely to blame.

  • TigerAir flights from Australia to Bali cancelled permanently
The low-cost airline TigerAir has permanently stopped flights from Australia to Bali. The decision once again leaves Australians currently staying on the tourist island unsure as to how they'll get home. It comes three weeks after the airline left hundreds of people stranded in Bali after the Indonesian government imposed new administrative requirements.

  • Human rights groups say Iranian refugee deported from Fiji needs urgent medical attention
On Manus Island and Nauru, refugees are in limbo again as confusion reigns over the future of Australia's deal to send them to the US. One of those refugees is Iranian man Loghman Sawari, who escaped from Manus Island to Fiji last week, after claiming he'd been assaulted. The 21-year-old was detained by Fijian police today and deported back to PNG, despite an agreement with the country's immigration director that he could apply for asylum. Human rights groups say he urgently needs medical attention, and Fiji's Human Rights Commissioner says the country has breached its international obligations.

  • PTSD trial may lead to alternative treatment
An Australian-first trial is testing whether two weeks of intensive treatment for post traumatic stress disorder can be as good or better than the usual three month programs. About 200 serving and former defence force personnel are being recruited to take part. The treatment may eventually be available to other members of the community with PTSD.

  • Donald Trump reveals on Twitter that he may not honour Australia-US refugee deal
Donald Trump has humiliated the Australian Government with a late-night tweet condemning the deal to send refugees from PNG and Nauru to the United States. The US President says the former Obama Administration had made a 'dumb deal', and suggests he's still considering whether or not to honour it. It's a direct contradiction to the Prime Minister's repeated assurances today that the deal is still on.

  • History professor says Trump Administration has 'no time' for old ways of diplomacy
A professor of history says the 'robust' conversation between the US President and Prime Minister shows the 'recklessness, impulsiveness and volatility' of Donald Trump. He also questions whether Australia will 'trade' its national security to gain US backing for the refugee deal. And Professor Curran asks how can Australia trust the US in a time of crisis?
Featured: Professor James Curran, author of the Lowy Institute's recent paper 'Fighting with America', a history of the Australia-US alliance.

  • Push for donations overhaul after Turnbull's $1.75m election spend
Revelations that Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and his wife donated $1.75 million to the Liberal Party's re-election campaign have sparked calls for a crackdown on Australia's political donations system. Political researcher and former senior government adviser Dr Lindy Edwards tells PM that Mr Turnbull has benefited from one of the world's most lax political donations systems.

  • Experts concerned about Turnbull's emphasis on clean coal
Malcolm Turnbull's call for Australia to embrace new clean coal power plants has been met with disbelief in some quarters, with energy experts saying that energy prices are likely to go up if the plan goes ahead. They say there's also climate change to consider. And while the Government says it won't rule out using the Clean Energy Finance Corporation to fund a new generation of coal-fired power stations, some say the cost of the technology may prove prohibitive

  • Former Don Dale detainee Dylan Voller released early from adult prison
A judge has decided former Don Dale detainee Dylan Voller should be released from adult prison early, so he can attend a rehabilitation camp in Central Australia. Voller, who was a witness at the Northern Territory youth detention royal commission last year, was due to finish a prison sentence for aggravated robbery and other offences in October. Voller will be on bail under strict conditions during his four month release.

  • Government faces backlash over child care package
The Federal Government is facing a growing backlash over its plans to overhaul the child care sector and it's coming from an unlikely quarter. Several childcare industry leaders say Government's proposed improvements to child care rebates will come at the expense of other families, who rely on family tax benefits which the Government wants to slash in order to pay for the child care package. Advocates for families and the early education sector say any child care price relief will be a long way off. They're predicting the Government's reform package will never materialise because key Senate cross-benchers don't support cuts to the family tax benefits.
