  • New study finds that seven per cent of us sleepwalk
It happens to seven per cent of us, and only at night, but sometimes it can cause serious injury - or even death. Now a new study from the University of South Australia has identified just how common sleepwalking is, supplanting previous reports that estimated anywhere from zero to 40 per cent of the population. Researchers will next examine the best treatments for the condition, in order to help people do less walking and more sleeping.

  • Australian surrogacy nurse Tammy Davis-Charles arrested in Cambodia
An Australian nurse has been arrested by Cambodia's anti-human trafficking police for running a surrogacy clinic in the country. Cambodia has recently banned commercial surrogacy, following on from other South-East Asian nations. The legal status of surrogacy arrangements made with the clinic are unclear. Some Australians have paid up to $70,000 dollars for surrogacy services and are in limbo about whether they will be able to receive their babies.

  • NSW Health warns about disease-carrying mozzies
Mosquitoes carry malaria, dengue and yellow fever, which together are responsible for several million deaths and hundreds of millions of infections a year. Fortunately for Australians, few deaths happen in this country, but this year cases of serious disease-carrying mosquitoes are up - way up. NSW Health authorities say mozzies are in plague proportions, thanks to flooding over the last few months.

  • Residents at Williamtown call for more testing of exposure to chemicals
Residents near the Williamtown defence base are preparing for the first court proceedings in their class action against the Department of Defence tomorrow. They're seeking financial compensation for decline in property values, after chemicals on the base leached into their groundwater. It comes as some residents' blood tests, including a baby's, reveal elevated levels of the toxins. Residents are now calling for more rigorous testing of how the chemicals spread.

  • Racism a barrier to Aboriginal staff retention in NSW Health
A New South Wales Health official has admitted that racism remains a barrier to retaining Aboriginal staff in the sector. Five years ago, the State Government announced a plan to recruit 1,400 more employees of Aboriginal heritage by 2015. When the deadline rolled around, NSW Health had fallen short of their target by more than 200 people. One year on, it continues to do so.

  • As the Australian dollar slumps, who are the winners and losers?
The Australian dollar has been on the slide since Donald Trump became president-elect of the United States. Much of the Aussie dollar's weakness is related to the strength of the US dollar - now at a 14 year high. The US dollar's strength is a mixed blessing for Australia. It's hurting some of Australia's key trading partners, but at the same time, the economy is in desperate need of a lower exchange rate. So how low can it go, and who will be the winners and losers?

Victorian education minister James Merlino and NSW education minister Adrian Piccoli joined forces at Footscray North Primary School in Melbourne's west today to put pressure on their federal counterpart over funding for Gonski. They want the Turnbull Government to commit to the final two years of the six year plan, in 2019-20. Federal Education Minister Simon Birmingham says the Commonwealth is already increasing funding.

  • Former youth detention worker calls for Cleveland Review to be widened
Pressure is mounting on the Queensland Government to further expand a review into allegations of mistreatment at the troubled Cleveland youth detention centre. It comes as a former worker tells the ABC about a culture of poor management and some workers' use of excessive force on juveniles, which goes beyond the review's terms of reference. She is one of at least two workers who has not been asked to give evidence to the review, despite raising allegations of mistreatment in submissions.
