  • South Australian Family First Senator Bob Day quits politics
There's yet another layer of complexity for Malcolm Turnbull to confront on the Senate cross-benches tonight. The South Australian Family First Senator Bob Day has quit politics. The building company he founded more than 30 years ago went into liquidation today. The senator apologised to the hundreds of subcontractors and clients potentially left out of pocket by the collapse of his Home Australia Group.

  • Liquidators called in as Home Australia group collapses
More than 200 customers across five states, and hundreds of sub-contractors, are reeling from the news that Bob Day's company has gone into liquidation. It's not clear how many creditors will be owed money after the collapse of his Home Australia residential new home building group.

  • 'Nauru files' lead to only one person charged
In August more than 2,000 incident reports were leaked to the Guardian, alleging abuse of children and adults at the Australian-funded immigration processing centre on Nauru. This afternoon a Senate Estimates hearing was told that only one allegation has resulted in charges being laid by the Nauru Police. Government officials said many of the incidents in the so-called Nauru files were minor complaints, about things such as microwaves not working.

  • How the humble avocado has become a new symbol of the generation gap
It might seem strange, but an inner-city 'hipster' cafe menu item has become a financial symbol for a generation. 'Smashed avocado' as it's known, is just that - smashed avocado on toast. It's considered somewhat of a luxury menu item, and it's fast becoming a staple brunch item for countless city-dwelling millennials. It's part of a growing number of indulgences being enjoyed by the children of baby boomers who say they've given up on the idea of home ownership.

  • Public brawl between Attorney-General and Solicitor-General ramps up before inquiry
The public brawl between the nation's two most senior law officers spiralled further today during an inquiry into controversial changes to how the Government gets legal advice. Claims and counter-claims of dishonesty, subterfuge and political fiddling were flung about amid heated exchanges. But the hearings got no closer to clearing up the legal dispute between the Attorney-General George Brandis and the Solicitor-General Justin Gleeson.

  • Federal ministers tight-lipped on start date of WA suicide prevention trial
Federal ministers have left a suicide prevention meeting in Western Australia's Kimberley promising more talk and unwilling to say when a promised trial will start. The meeting was called to discuss the rollout of a national suicide prevention trial in the Kimberley, given the region's high rate of Indigenous suicide. Indigenous leaders remain hopeful the roundtable will effect real change but concede there was an air of frustration in the room.

  • Hughes family storms out of inquest after claims of 'sledging' not substantiated
Some of Australia's top cricketers have been slammed over their alleged 'failure' to recall key events surrounding the death of Phillip Hughes. The Hughes' Family lawyer, Greg Melick SC, told a Coronial Inquest that it's clear there was a plan to target the batsman through short-pitch bowling and that he was viciously sledged. Earlier, the Coroner was advised not to make any recommendations about sledging, or the nature of play leading up to Hughes being fatally hit. It was an emotional day in the courtroom with members of the Hughes family storming out and bursting into tears.
